After 14 rounds of words like “probouleutic” and “zwitterion” and “schistorrhachis,” Dev Shah, an eighth grader from Florida, reached the apotheosis of his craft, correctly spelling “psammophile” to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night. He denied the spelling community another thrilling spell-off, outlasted the dominant Texans and didn’t let the schwa make him schweat. If you weren’t able to watch the finals on Thursday night, here are a few takeaways. The schwa is a stone-cold killerThe schwa — the “uh”-like sound that can be represented by any vowel in the English alphabet, also known as the bane of competitive spellers’ existence — knocked out several finalists, as it routinely does.

A meeting of the word panel was held on Sunday at National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Md., to finalize the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee words. Here is a guide to the rules for the Scripps National Spelling Bee — and their small changes for this year’s competition, including a shorter allotted time to answer. A speller advances through them by correctly spelling a word and answering a multiple-choice question about its meaning. After the pronouncer says the spelling word, the clock starts. If one speller is correct, that person will be given a spelling word drawn from the Championship Word List.

5 Things to Know About Tim Scott

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, who announced his presidential campaign on Monday, is the first Black Republican senator from the South in more than a century and has been one of his party’s most prominent voices on matters of race, often navigating a political tightrope. Here are five things to know about Mr. Scott. A rapid riseMr. Scott was elected to Congress during the Tea Party wave of 2010 to represent South Carolina’s First District, which would flip to Democrats in 2018 and back to Republicans in 2020. He was previously an insurance agent and served on the Charleston County Council and in the South Carolina House. The woman who appointed him was Nikki Haley, then the governor of South Carolina and now one of his opponents in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
The Missouri legislature last week passed a ban on transition care for transgender youth. As more American teenagers have identified as transgender, it is difficult to say how many will transition medically — many transgender people do not — and precisely how many will later change course. Methodology, demographics and even the definition of detransition vary widely from study to study, which typically show that between 2 percent and 13 percent of people detransition, and not always because of regret. Leading medical groups in the United States, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association, say transition care should be available to minors and oppose legislative bans. Many experts say policymakers should ensure access to high-quality care, including thorough individual evaluations to determine which treatments are appropriate and at what age.
The Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley refused on Sunday to endorse a federal abortion ban at a specific number of weeks’ gestation, saying that to do so would be to lie to the American people about what is politically possible. “I think the media has tried to divide them by saying we have to decide certain weeks,” Ms. Haley said in an interview on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.” “In states, yes. At the federal level, it’s not realistic. It’s not being honest with the American people.”She was responding to a question from her interviewer, Margaret Brennan, about why she would not join another likely candidate, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, in endorsing a 20-week national ban. But her comments on Sunday stood out for the explicitness of her rejection of committing to a gestational limit.
The jury found that Ms. Carroll had not proved, by a preponderance of the evidence, that Mr. Trump had raped her, as she had long claimed. Jury members had the option of finding Mr. Trump liable for sexual abuse or for forcible touching, which are less serious charges than rape under state law. Ms. Carroll sued the former president last year. Its findings are civil, not criminal, meaning Mr. Trump has not been convicted of any crime and faces no prison time. Sexual abuse is defined in New York as subjecting a person to sexual contact without consent.
In hypothetical general-election matchups, Mr. Biden, who announced his re-election campaign last month, trailed the two leading candidates in the Republican primary, former President Donald J. Trump and Gov. Yet neither of them exceeded 45 percent in The Post’s poll, with many voters saying they were undecided or naming a different candidate. In the Biden-Trump matchup, 44 percent of respondents said they would definitely or probably vote for Mr. Trump, and 38 percent for Mr. Biden. In the Biden-DeSantis matchup, 42 percent said they would definitely or probably vote for Mr. DeSantis, and 37 percent for Mr. Biden. The Post did not ask voters about his primary challengers, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson, but Mr. Biden led them by huge margins in other surveys.
Jim Justice of West Virginia is set to announce a Senate campaign on Thursday, giving Republicans a strong recruit against Senator Joe Manchin III, one of the most vulnerable Democrats up for re-election in 2024. The West Virginia race is one of the most essential pickup opportunities for Republicans if they are to retake control of the Senate, which Democrats hold by a narrow 51-49 seat margin. Mr. Manchin, who represents by far the most Republican state held by any Democratic senator, has yet to announce whether he will seek re-election, but Republicans are hoping that Mr. Justice’s entry might spur him toward retirement. Mr. Manchin in recent years has been one of the few Democrats who can compete in the overwhelmingly Republican state.

As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Mr. Biden was deeply involved in negotiations to authorize the invasion of Iraq. He later said he had been wrong to think President George W. Bush “would use the authority we gave him properly.”

From small towns in Iowa and New Hampshire to the grand stages of interest groups’ conventions, the 2024 presidential campaign is underway, whether or not Americans are ready. The past week has brought at least four declared or likely candidates to New Hampshire, three to Iowa and one to South Carolina. Nine addressed the National Rifle Association’s annual forum in Indianapolis, and three attended a Republican donor retreat in Nashville. On Wednesday, the Republican National Committee, in a surprise to no one, chose Fox News to host the party’s first debate this August. The declared candidates filed their quarterly fund-raising reports late this week, revealing the first big campaign finance error of the season.

How votes compare with 2020The map below shows how votes cast in this race compare with votes cast in the 2020 presidential election in the same area. Only counties that have reported almost all of their votes are shown.
Officials may not begin processing mail ballots until Election Day, and officials have said that vote counting may take until the morning after the election or later that day. Early returns could give a misleading impression of a large Republican advantage before all mail ballots are counted. Learn more about the timing of results ›

Most people are expected to vote early — by mail, in-person or by drop box. Those ballots require the verification of voters’ signatures, and officials say the timing of results will depend on how many people return their ballots at the last minute on Election Day. No results are released until 10 p.m. Eastern. Learn more about the timing of results ›
Counting could be faster than in 2020, when 68 percent of votes were reported by midnight Eastern and 77 percent were reported by noon on Wednesday. Officials are now allowed to begin processing mail ballots before Election Day; in 2020, mail ballots could not be opened or counted until after the election. Learn more about the timing of results ›
