The weakness in Nvidia's stock — down around 1.8%, at $411 a share, in late trading Wednesday — may prove temporary as a result. The CFO's comments came after The Wall Street Journal reported late Tuesday that the Commerce Department could implement stricter measures around the export of AI chips to China and other countries of concern as early as July. NVDA YTD mountain Nvidia's stock performance so far in 2023. Still, over the long term, Nvidia's future business would feel an impact from strict export controls on AI chips, Kress acknowledged. The remarks came during an AMD event where the chip company outlined its strategy for the AI market, which is dominated by rival Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O). While AWS has not made any public commitments to use AMD's new MI300 chips in its cloud services, Dave Brown, vice president of elastic compute cloud at Amazon, said AWS is considering them. Nvidia does sell its chips piecemeal but is also asking cloud providers if they are willing to offer an entire system designed by Nvidia in a product called DGX Cloud. Brown said AWS had declined to work with Nvidia on the DGX Cloud offering. AWS started selling Nvidia's H100 chip in March, but as part of systems of its own design.

Nvidia , a dominant player in the artificial intelligence computing market, may face increasing competition from custom chip designers in the near future, according to Morgan Stanley. "We therefore expect to see increasingly energy-efficient and low-cost AI custom chip designs ahead, matching or even outpacing the growth of NVIDIA's and AMD's general purpose GPUs." Morgan Stanley is "overweight" on the five stocks, and increased their price targets in the June 11 note. AMD said on Tuesday its most-advanced GPU for artificial intelligence, the MI300X, will start shipping to some customers later this year. AMD's announcement represents the strongest challenge to Nvidia , which currently dominates the market for AI chips with over 80% market share, according to analysts. AMD CEO Lisa Su told investors and analysts in San Francisco on Tuesday that AI is the company's "largest and most strategic long-term growth opportunity." AI chips are one of the bright spots in the semiconductor industry, while PC sales, a traditional driver of semiconductor processor sales, slump. "I love this chip," Su said.

Wall Street is again abuzz over artificial intelligence ever since chipmaker Nvidia reported blowout earnings last week. Analysts who've been very optimistic about the stock believe that like Nvidia, AMD has the potential to ride the AI wave . One bright spot is that AMD is pulling market share away from Intel , Ross said. However, that area of AI is currently cornered by Nvidia, which has around 75% market share, according to BofA. But BofA still retained its neutral rating for AMD, as it believes that gaining market share against Nvidia could prove tougher than expected.

Demand for AI chips in data centers spurred Nvidia to guide for $11 billion in sales during the current quarter, blowing away analyst estimates of $7.15 billion. "The flashpoint was generative AI," Huang said in an interview with CNBC. Nvidia currently dominates the market for AI GPUs. "The data center of the past, which was largely CPUs for file retrieval, is going to be, in the future, generative data," Huang said. That's one reason why Nvidia's data center business grew 14% during the first calendar quarter versus flat growth for AMD's data center unit and a decline of 39% in Intel's AI and data center business unit.
Lots of Club holdings, including Nvidia (NVDA) and Alphabet (GOOGL), were among the stocks traded by some of Wall Street's biggest investors and money managers in the first quarter. That firm, Jeffrey Ubben's Inclusive Capital, had owned 1.63 million Salesforce shares at the end of December, worth nearly $217 million at the time. Jeff Smith's Starboard Value also sold some Salesforce shares in Q1, leaving the firm with 2.5 million shares at the end of March. Mason Morfit's ValueAct Capital amplified its Salesforce stake in the first quarter, ending with 3.5 million shares, up from just 560,221 shares at the end of 2022. Loeb's Third Point amassed 4.75 million shares of Alphabet, worth $492.7 million at the end of the first quarter.
AMD For Morgan Stanley, AMD is well set up for the second half of this year. "While AMD stock could be under pressure near-term, we expect some recovery as the company outlines its AI vision and potential for growth in its unique converged AI (MI300) product," they wrote. According to FactSet, analysts covering AMD give the stock average potential upside of 22%. Intel Morgan Stanley believes that Intel's revenues "have found a bottom," and margins are set to recover in the second half of the year. According to FactSet, analysts covering Intel give the stock average potential upside of just 1.3%.
Among the index's biggest losers were Disney , American Express , Goldman Sachs and Boeing . Here are the top 10 names with the largest upside to the average price target, according to data pulled from FactSet. American Express can rally 23.5%, while Goldman Sachs has 21% upside, according to analysts' average price targets. Goldman Sachs, however, missed on revenue thanks to a $470 million loss on the partial sale of its Marcus loans portfolio.
May 4 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) is working with Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.O) on the chipmaker's expansion into artificial intelligence processors, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday, citing people with knowledge of the matter. Shares of AMD climbed 9% on the news, while Microsoft shares were up about 1%. The software giant is providing financial support to bolster AMD's efforts, and working with the chipmaker on a homegrown Microsoft processor for AI workloads, code-named Athena, the report said. Several hundreds of employees working at a silicon division at Microsoft are now working on the Athena project, the report added. Wall Street is focused on the potential for a bounce back within Advanced Micro Devices ' struggling personal computer and data center businesses. Arya's price target of $95 reflects the potential for an upside of 5.7% over Tuesday's close. Meanwhile, Citi's Christopher Danely said data center growth estimates for the second half seem aggressive. "We believe there could be more downside to AMD's data center business as AMD's data center revenue has only corrected 22% from its peak in 3Q22 while Intel's data center business has corrected 42%." Moore said the data center business was down 22% quarter over quarter, while PCs dropped 18% quarter over quarter and 65% year over year.
AMD's lackluster forecast sparks selloff in shares

The stock fell more than 6% in early trading and was set to erase nearly $9 billion in market value. Intel, whose shares rose last week on a more upbeat PC market outlook, gained more than 2%. The PC market has been in a slump for the past few quarters after a demand surge during the pandemic, while data center spending has also slowed as the economic outlook worsens. AMD, whose smaller and more efficient data center chips had helped it take market share from Intel last year, missed estimates for both PC and data center chip sales in the first quarter. "AMD results were more vulnerable (to the PC slump) than Intel's because most AMD-based PC customers were consumers.

AMD revenue drops 9% as PC chip sales decline sharply

AMD reported first-quarter results on Tuesday that showed revenue dropping 9% on an annual basis. While earnings and sales beat Wall Street expectations, AMD's guidance for the current quarter was light and shares dropped over 3% in extended trading. AMD reported $739 million in sales in the category, a 65% decrease from $2.1 billion in sales during the same period last year. AMD management also said that the category is likely to grow in the current quarter. Last week, Intel, AMD's primary competitor in the PC and server chip markets, reported that its overall sales dropped 36%.
The good news: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) first-quarter beat on Tuesday revealed a likely bottom in its struggling PC business. The not-as-good: The chipmaker won't resume the kind of growth we're used to until the second half of the year. Here's why: Management sees some "modest" data center growth in the second quarter, but demand remains suppressed as a result of ongoing cloud optimization efforts. Outlook AMD provided an outlook for the second quarter of 2023 that was slightly below expectations. Ultimately management expects sequential growth in client and data center to be offset by "modest declines" in gaming and embedded.
Jim Cramer's strategy for navigating the 4 hurdles facing the stock marketJim Cramer said Tuesday that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's debt-ceiling comments necessitated a change in his near-term approach to the stock market. He also analyzed the latest news hitting energy stocks and looked head to AMD's earnings report. A transcript will be added shortly.
"AMD results were more vulnerable than Intel's because most AMD-based PC customers were consumers. In contrast, Intel had a significant share in the business PC segment," said Mikako Kitagawa, analyst at research firm Gartner. "The results reflect a weaker consumer PC segment than the business PC segment." Order cuts by networking equipment makers have also cast a shadow over demand for products by Xilinx, the data center and networking chip company AMD acquired last year. Data center segment revenue was flat at $1.30 billion during the quarter.
