For some firms, the move shrank the amount of taxable income that can be offset by interest expenses. Higher interest rates generally lead to higher interest expenses tied to companies’ variable-rate debt, new borrowings and refinancings. The cap can hit companies’ cash flows immediately, though not necessarily their financial statements, due to timing differences in claiming the deductions. Aluminum maker and recycler Novelis plans to allocate less cash toward its venture-capital arm due to the higher interest expenses. Leveraged loans have variable rates that typically reset every one to three months, based on short-term interest rates.
DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Feb 6 (Reuters) - In the southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir, residents were hoping and praying for news of relatives and friends after a massive earthquake and a huge aftershock turned apartment blocks into mounds of rubble and piles of shattered masonry. More than 2,400 people have been killed and thousands more injured in Turkey and northwest Syria. Hindenburg in its report said key listed Adani companies had "substantial debt" and that shares in seven Adani listed firms have an 85% downside due to what it called sky-high valuations. The Adani Group said the allegation of stock manipulation had "no basis" and stemmed from ignorance of Indian law. Its response stated that over the past decade, group companies have "consistently de-levered". In total, the seven listed Adani Group companies now have a market capitalisation of $99 billion, versus $218 billion before the Hindenberg report. The prices of U.S. dollar bonds issued by Adani Group entities edged higher on Friday after diving on Thursday.
The rout has sparked concern that the fallout could also affect, more broadly, confidence in India. GEORGE BOUBOURAS, HEAD OF RESEARCH AT K2 ASSET MANAGEMENT, MELBOURNE (UNDERWEIGHT ON INDIA)"The Adani effect works both ways given the market cap relative to index. "To attract more capital the Indian economy needs more FTAs (free-trade agreements) and more financial market reform - a long process." Given there has not been any significant change for now for the market valuation, the market remains overall expensive in our view." Adani is a known levered name in India, so I would think most participants should not associate the same issues for other Indian assets."

The secondary share sale of flagship Adani Enterprises (ADEL.NS) was subscribed 93% on Tuesday, including the anchor investor portion, Indian stock exchange data showed. The share sale needed at least 90% subscription to go through. By Monday, the book building process of the country's largest share sale had received only 3% in bids, amid swirling concerns that the share sale could struggle due to a market rout in Adani's stocks in recent days. That has since sparked $65 billion in cumulative losses for stocks of the Adani group, which called the report baseless. The support for Adani's share sale came even as the flagship's shares were trading at 2,967 rupees, up nearly 2.5% but below the lower end of the share sale price band of 3,112 rupees.

When I went over about 1,000 stocks this weekend, I was astonished to see that the stocks with the strongest charts were those in the most offensive categories. The outlook is rosy for SolarEdge Technologies and First Solar , according to Goldman Sachs. Analyst Brian Lee named the two solar stocks among his top picks heading into 2023, saying they can add to this year's gains. "While solar equities outperformed in 2022 vs. R2K, stocks are still ~20% below early '21 peak levels and valuations remain below pre-IRA levels," Lee wrote in a Sunday note. Solar stocks outperformed in the second half of 2022, after underperforming in the first half of the year, following the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. Meanwhile, shares of First Solar may have surged more than 77% this year, but the analyst forecasts the company could be the "biggest beneficiary of the IRA" because of its "outsized leverage to US utility-scale solar," Lee said.
The stock market could reach new lows in the new year, but there are some stocks where investors can weather market volatility, according to MKM Partners. That doesn't bode well for stocks and means there's a high risk that the equity market will see a new low next year, he said. In that market environment, MKM recommends focusing on stocks that are defensive and avoiding sectors trading at high-cyclical adjusted valuations. MKM sees investors overlooking the amount of leverage that Arch has as a positive going into the current cycle. The pick with the largest potential upside is Talos Energy , which MKM sees surging 47% to its target price.

"History suggests that if the US economy experiences a recession, the SPX bottoms out during the recession and not before. Only the March 1945-October 1945 recession saw the SPX rally ahead of and throughout the recession," the note said. Canaccord Genuity strategist Tony Dwyer is one of the Wall Street pros that sees a recession and a market bottom coming soon. He pointed to the historical track record of market bottoms coming after the start of a recession as one reason for short-term pessimism about the market. We would enter 2023 with a more defensive posture, with an eye on adding risk as the market begins to more fully reflect the likelihood of recession," Dwyer said.
