“The Federal Reserve is one of many examples of how we’ve deviated from the Constitution in that regard,” Lee added. Challenging the Fed’s independence“The American people re-elected President Trump by a resounding margin giving him a mandate to implement the promises he made on the campaign trail. That’s empowered Fed officials to make interest rate decisions that aren’t necessarily popular but could help the nation’s economy in the long run. But on the campaign trail, Trump floated requiring Fed officials to consult with him on interest rate decisions. That could lead to pressure on Fed officials to keep rates lower to satisfy Trump’s wishes, which in turn could reignite inflation.

Leah Millis | ReutersNow that Donald Trump has been elected president, many individual investors are wondering what that means for their money. Yet, when it comes to long-term performance of the markets and policies that Trump proposed on the campaign trail, financial advisors say it's best to take a wait-and-see approach before making any big money decisions. Lee Baker, a CFP and owner of Claris Financial Advisors in Atlanta, said he's also told clients not to make wholesale financial changes now. Many investors expect Trump to lead with faster economic growth and more market-friendly policies, said Francis during a Friday webcast on what Trump's presidency could mean for investors' money. While those policies would put more money in Americans' pockets, Francis noted, other experts say it's too soon to count on those changes.

An Airbus A350-941 from Singapore Airlines is preparing to take off on the runway at Barcelona-El Prat Airport in Barcelona, Spain, on May 1, 2024. SINGAPORE — Shares of Singapore Airlines dropped after the city-state's flag carrier reported a fall of almost 50% in net profit for its first half April to September period, citing lower yields and growing competition. Net profit in the first half of the fiscal year came in at 742 million Singapore dollars ($559.12 million), 48.5% lower than the SG$1.44 billion in the same period a year ago. Singapore Airlines said in a release that the fall in operating profit was due to "increased capacity and stronger competition in key markets," which led to a fall in yields and ultimately, profit. However, SIA will not "hold back on capacity growth just because there's competition in the market," Lee added.

President Donald Trump meets business leaders at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, in November, 2017. Donald Trump's victory in U.S. elections has raised the specter of higher tariffs on China — but it may not be the only Asian country that faces this predicament, according to Goldman Sachs. Meanwhile, Vietnam's trade surplus with the U.S between January and September stands at $90 billion. U.S. data shows that the U.S. trade deficit with China narrowed to $279.11 billion in 2023, from $346.83 billion in 2016. Regardless of tariffs, Goldman still expects continued pressure for the relocation of certain supply chains from China to Southeast Asia, India or Mexico in particular.

Yet, Wall Street's reaction to the election outcome does not reflect how many Americans feel about the state of their personal finances, some financial experts say. Feelings, however, should not overshadow anyone's focus when assessing the potential impact of a second Trump presidency when it comes to finances, advisors say. "Stick to your long-term financial plan, adjusting only when your personal circumstances or goals change." However, improving your personal economy is possible by taking better control of your money, experts say. Increase savings goals Boost savings goals in accounts that also offer tax breaks.

The president-elect promised on the campaign trail to cut taxes on Social Security benefits in his second term. For some baby boomers, lower Social Security taxes could mean larger monthly checks in the short-term. But experts predict that the Social Security tax cuts, along with other campaign promises made by Trump, could quickly drain the national Social Security fund. More than 72 million Americans receive Social Security and the estimated average monthly check is $1,907 a month, per the Social Security Administration. Social Security tax cuts would hurt low-income retirees, younger generationsUS Social Security will be depleted in the next decade without Congressional action.

President Joe Biden had campaigned on passing legislation to eliminate the death penalty at the federal level, but pulled back on that in office. Biden’s aides say he supports death row inmates serving life sentences without probation or parole. Meanwhile, the Justice Department under Biden and Garland has not sought the death penalty in federal cases that could have warranted it, and has even withdrawn death penalty sentences in about two dozen cases that it had inherited. There are currently 40 inmates, all men, on federal death row, according to the nonpartisan Death Penalty Information Center.
