According to Tuesday's indictment, they have been charged with four federal counts including "Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law: Excessive Force and Failure to Intervene." The indictment says the five former officers provided "false and misleading information" and "intentionally omitted material information" in their communications with the Memphis Police Department in the reports about Nichols' arrest, the filing added. In July, the Justice Department opened an investigation into whether the Memphis Police Department has an unconstitutional "pattern or practice" of using excessive force and racial discrimination. The Justice Department said it had received multiple reports of Memphis officers using excessive force and reports they may use force against people who are already restrained or in police custody.

California's legislation targets the caste system in South Asian immigrant communities by adding caste to the list of categories protected under the state's anti-discrimination laws. Activists opposing caste discrimination say it is no different from other forms of discrimination like racism and hence should be outlawed. Earlier this year, Seattle became the first U.S. city to outlaw caste discrimination after a city council vote and Toronto's school board became the first in Canada to recognize that caste discrimination existed in the city's schools. The Dalit community is on the lowest rung of the Hindu caste system; members have been treated as "untouchables."

"BMI has received a communication from Marshall B. Mathers, III, professionally known as Eminem, objecting to the Vivek Ramaswamy campaign's use of Eminem's musical composition (the "Eminem Works") and requesting that BMI remove all Eminem Works from the Agreement," BMI says in the letter. Ramaswamy's campaign told CNN it will comply with the request to stop using Eminem's music. The 38-year-old tech entrepreneur was at the center of many of last week's first Republican primary debate's most dramatic moments.
