Opinion | Jim Jordan Doesn’t Know What Courage Is
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( David French | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It’s hard to overstate the extent to which our nation’s absurd Jim Jordan moment encapsulates the deep dysfunction of the political right in the United States. There’s of course all the chaos and incompetence of the Trumpist Republican Party, on display for the world to see. The Republican base admires Jordan because it thinks he is tough. Instead, he is a symbol of the way in which Trumpist Republicans have corrupted the concept of courage itself. To understand what courage is supposed to be, I turn to a definition from C.S.

There is deep skepticism across the Middle East about Israel and U.S. assessment of the Gaza hospital blast, Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, said Wednesday. Israel, the U.S. government and independent security experts said Wednesday the preliminary evidence for a deadly explosion at a Gaza hospital compound pointed to a local militant group, casting doubt on Palestinian claims that an Israeli airstrike was responsible. "Nobody is buying that narrative in this part of the world," Safadi told NBC News. Earlier Wednesday, Safadi told CNN that Jordan believes that Israel was responsible. "Everybody here believes that Israel is responsible for it.

In Ohio, Jordan is a hometown boy whose Ohio State University wrestling coach title, conservative policies and never-say-die persona on Capitol Hill have earned him more devotion than he's currently receiving in Congress. It was a common theme on a cloudy fall day in downtown Urbana, Ohio — an oasis of cafes and antique stores in the sprawling, rich farmland that makes up most of Jordan’s district. Sherry Vaught, a Democratic mayoral candidate in Mansfield, had harsh criticism for the Ohio congressman as his possible speakership looms. JD Knopp, an 18-year-old resident of Mechanicsburg, Ohio just outside Urbana, said he thinks Jordan will make a great leader for a divided Republican party. Whether Jordan becomes speaker won't affect his opinion, but it might change how he views those who keep the congressman from winning the speakership.

Lacking the 217 votes he needs to claim the speaker's gavel, Jordan postponed further action until 11 a.m. ET (1500 GMT) on Wednesday, while he scrambled to pressure the 20 fellow Republicans who voted against him on Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday's failed vote meant that the House remains leaderless, as it has been since a handful of Republican insurgents engineered McCarthy's removal. Republicans control the House by a narrow 221-212 margin, giving them little room for error on divisive votes like this one. 3 House Republican, and Patrick McHenry, who is temporarily filling the speaker's chair.

CNN —Conservative Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is bringing the House back to the floor Tuesday to vote on whether he will succeed ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy and finally end the chamber’s prolonged paralysis amid deep GOP divisions. But it’s not clear whether Jordan can be the one who unifies the fractured House Republican conference, with some lawmakers still opposed. Jordan can now only lose three votes, instead of four, but this is a temporary drop until the Florida congressman returns. “We need to get a speaker tomorrow,” Jordan said Monday after leaving a closed-door GOP conference meeting. Several Republicans – including from districts won by President Joe Biden – declined to say Monday evening whether they would vote for Jordan on the floor.

"If Jim Jordan becomes Speaker, it is very unlikely that Congress will do anything on big tech in the near future," said Jon Schweppe, a policy director at the conservative American Principles Project. As Jordan's internal campaign gained momentum on Monday, Washington's thousands of lobbyists raced to determine how a Jordan speakership might impact their clients' bottom lines. "Instead, you'll see more performative anger over petty issues, designed to redirect attention away from the things that could actually hold big tech accountable," said the lobbyist. As chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, Jordan has accused tech companies of censoring conservatives on their platforms. For big tech companies, the prospect of bipartisan antitrust legislation passing in Congress would amount to a far more urgent threat to their businesses than a partisan content moderation bill.

Jordan prevailed in a closed-door vote over Austin Scott, a Georgia lawmaker who has kept a relatively low profile in his 12 years in Congress. 2 House Republican who was seen as the heir apparent to McCarthy. But Scalise abandoned his bid on Thursday after it became clear he could not consolidate Republicans behind him. Jordan, who serves as House Judiciary Committee chair, tormented Republican leaders for years as a vocal advocate for the party's right wing. I think Jim Jordan can do it," said Representative Nicole Malliotakis.

But Jordan, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, faced skepticism from those who were angry that his supporters had failed to unite behind Scalise. “If we, as Republicans, are going to be the majority, we have to do the right things the right way. Some members said they were pushing for a vote by the full house this weekend, once Republicans picked a nominee. Some Republicans have suggested expanding Representative Patrick McHenry's powers as temporary speaker, which would enable the House to take up aid to Israel and other pressing matters. I think Jim Jordan can do it," said Representative Nicole Malliotakis.

Party lawmakers were due to hear from candidates Republicans at 1 p.m. Hardline conservative Jim Jordan said he would seek the gavel, after narrowly losing to Scalise in a nominating vote on Wednesday. But he faced skepticism from Scalise allies, who were angry that lawmakers had failed to unite behind his bid. A successful candidate would need to secure 217 votes from the splintered 221-212 Republican majority to win the job. Republicans considered and rejected a rule that would require any nominee to lock up 217 of their votes before moving to a public vote on the House floor.

Many expected that pick to be House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, whom Scalise had bested in a secret ballot on Wednesday. His departure from the race angered Republican lawmakers and raised doubts about whether Jordan could drum up the necessary votes. Some lawmakers hope to revive a proposal requiring any candidate to secure 217 Republican votes to become the nominee. 'REWARDING BAD BEHAVIOR'Representative Don Bacon, a Republican centrist, said he and other lawmakers are withholding support for Jordan for now. Given a slim 221-212 House Republican majority, the next speaker can afford to lose support from no more than four Republicans and be elected speaker over Democratic opposition.

It reflects deep-rooted Arab fears that Israel's latest war with Hamas in Gaza could spark a new wave of permanent displacement from land where Palestinians want to build a future state. Some 700,000 Palestinians, half the Arab population of what was British-ruled Palestine, fled or were driven from their homes, many spilling into neighbouring Arab states where they or many of their descendants remain. Israel contests the assertion it drove Palestinians out, pointing out it was attacked by five Arab states the day after its creation. Palestinians and Arab states say a deal should include the right of those refugees and their descendants to return, something Israel has always rejected. After an emergency Arab League meeting on Wednesday, Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said all Arab states agreed to confront any attempt to displace Palestinians from their homeland.

An “American hero,” is how Republican colleagues describe Scalise after the 2017 shooting and on Wednesday, a narrow majority of them nominated him as their next House speaker following the unprecedented ouster of the former speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy rose to become Majority Leader, and Scalise the Majority Whip. One early morning three years later, Scalise and other Republican lawmakers gathered at a grassy park in the suburbs outside of Washington to practice for the upcoming congressional baseball game. When McCarthy seized the gavel in January once Republicans regained the majority, Scalise won the No. Late Wednesday, the speaker's office became a revolving door as holdout Republican lawmakers met with Scalise bringing their concerns, complaints and demands.

Rep. Steve Scalise, the GOP nominee to the next speaker of the House, has a rare blood cancer. "I guess it's the elephant in the room," said Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, who supports Scalise's speakership bid. Scalise was diagnosed in August with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer that's treatable but not curable, and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. "I will admit it's a concern," said Rep. Keith Self of Texas, who's among the Republicans who have yet to support Scalise. Burchett also suggested that Greene was getting more attention for her remark about Scalise's cancer because she's a woman.

Buck said Jordan and Scalise provided unsatisfactory answers on the question of reining in spending on Tuesday night. Scalise and Jordan have both racked up several dozen endorsements, but neither has a clear path to success. Some moderates, for example, have warned that Jordan becoming speaker would give Democrats plenty of ammunition for next year's congressional elections. The U.S. Capitol is seen at night as Republicans work towards electing a new Speaker of the House, on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., October 9, 2023. While McCarthy was the first speaker to be ousted in a formal vote, the last two Republicans to hold the job wound up leaving under pressure from party hardliners. Scalise appeared to have the support of many veteran and establishment Republicans including party leaders, while Jordan drew endorsements from others including Trump-style populists. Other candidates could also emerge, including McCarthy, who continues to have support among a number of Republicans and made clear on Monday that he would serve again as speaker if House Republicans asked him to do so. But not all House Republicans agreed that the chamber should move quickly to replace McCarthy, saying lawmakers are still grappling with the shock of his ouster.

When her husband, a UPS truck driver, nearly died from heatstroke, Theresa Klenk stepped in to help workers negotiate for air conditioning in all UPS trucks. At the time, she said, no UPS drivers wanted to speak up about the increasingly brutal conditions for fear of being reprimanded. According to UPS, drivers stop on average every three minutes — barely enough time for air-conditioning to make a dent. This year’s record heat caused dozens of deaths, filled some hospitals to pandemic levels and prompted government warnings about avoiding extended exposure to heat. It was a bittersweet victory for Jim and Theresa Klenk.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) speaks at a press conference as Rep. Steve Scalise looks on following a Republican caucus meeting at the U.S. Capitol. The top Republicans vying to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy as the next speaker of the House of Representatives have backed out of a televised debate that was scheduled to air Monday on Fox News. "The Republican conference needs a family discussion." Many Republican caucus members were angry that the party's differences would be publicly aired on national television in a debate for would-be speakers, a third source told NBC. The GOP caucus is scheduled to hold a conference meeting at 6 p.m. Monday to discuss choosing a speaker.
