Welcome back to TV, Jon Stewart. But since Stewart left in 2015, the "Daily Show" audience has gotten very small, and very old. So here, to spell it out, are three charts from Nielsen showing the decline of prime-time TV, the decline of late-night TV, and the fact that the people who still watch conventional TV are … not young. Big picture: Conventional TV used to attract 103 million people a night back in 2015. Here's what has happened to average viewership across prime-time TV — including both broadcast and cable networks — since 2015.

New York CNN —Tuning into the Super Bowl used to be easy — flick on the TV and find the broadcast channel or channels it was airing on. NEW YORK (AP) — As host of “The Daily Show” from 1999 to 2015, Jon Stewart changed comedy — and arguably journalism, too — with sharp, satirical takes on politics and current events. Catching lightning again will be difficult — particularly at a time when late-night television is greatly diminished as a cultural force and others, some from Stewart's family tree, are now competitors. It can be even tougher when, as Salon critic Melanie McFarland put it, the current Jon Stewart is forced to compete with memories of the old Jon Stewart. “Jon Stewart totally changed the face of late-night,” says Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. “There's something so 2010 about Jon Stewart now,” he says.

London Police Say Chemical Attacker Presumed Dead

LONDON (Reuters) - London police said on Friday that a man suspected of injuring several people last week by throwing a corrosive chemical on them is now presumed to have drowned in the River Thames. The case has drawn political attention in Britain because Ezedi had been granted asylum after a sexual assault conviction. Metropolitan Police Commander Jon Savell told reporters authorities now presume, based on CCTV footage, that Ezedi went into the River Thames from a bridge in west London. "It is now our main working theory that Ezedi has actually gone into the Thames from Chelsea Bridge. All of our work thus far has not seen him come off the bridge," Savell said.

CHICAGO (AP) — More than 200 reporters, photographers and other staffers with the Chicago Tribune and six other newsrooms around the nation began a 24-hour strike Thursday to protest years of “slow-walked” contract negotiations and to demand fair wages. The strike, which includes 76 members of the Chicago Tribune reporting staff, photographers and some editors, began at 5 a.m., said Caroline Kubzansky, a member of the Chicago Tribune Guild who is a general assignment reporter for the newspaper. The NewsGuild-CWA, which represents the employees, said the workers participating in the 24-hour strike are demanding fair wages and that management not eliminate their 401(k) match benefits. When Jon Stewart left "The Daily Show" in 2015, he had a modest but meaningful audience on cable TV. When he comes back next month, he'll find that in his absence, the show's audience has gotten much, much smaller. "The Daily Show's" overall audience has shrunk by 75% — from 2.2 million viewers a night to 570,000. And the age of the audience has skyrocketed because younger viewers are barely watching at all. On Wednesday, when I got these numbers from Nielsen, I asked someone who has spent a lot of time in late-night TV to guess the age of the Daily Show's audience today.

Sign up for the daily digest chronicling the evolving media landscape here. Back when Stewart helmed “The Daily Show,” he was needling much more establishment figures, such as conservative news personality Bill O’Reilly or Republican President George W. Bush. Stewart’s talent has always been using humor to disarm dishonest politicians and expose the absurdities of their arguments in a highly entertaining way. The number of journalists and media figures holding the morally bankrupt accountable has slimmed considerably — a service much of the country is thirsting for. Of course, Stewart’s comedy returns in a far more challenging environment with a smaller direct audience on cable.

On the other hand, maybe wondering about Stewart's TV audience isn't the right question. If TV ratings aren't important, then why would Stewart come back to a TV network — and why would a TV network care about landing Stewart? Doing a thing he's good at on Comedy Central — the thing he was good at doing on Comedy Central a decade ago — could be a real boost. AdvertisementOne theory is that Stewart's old audience, who are … old, will indeed come back to watch him. But even if they don't, the TV people I talked to argue that it won't matter that much to Comedy Central.

Jon Stewart will return to host “The Daily Show” on Monday nights during the 2024 election campaign, the network announced on Wednesday, bringing the comedian back to the television program that he turned into appointment viewing. “The Daily Show” has been without a permanent host since Trevor Noah stepped down in 2022. The first episode with Stewart, who left the show in 2015 after serving as host since 1999, will air on Comedy Central on Feb. 12 and on Paramount+ the following day. Stewart will also executive produce all episodes of “The Daily Show.” The episodes from Tuesday to Thursday will be hosted by a rotating lineup of the show’s news team. Chris McCarthy, the chief executive of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement that Stewart was the voice of a generation.

Jon Stewart is returning to "The Daily Show" — but only on Mondays. The comedian helmed the Comedy Central talk show between 1999 and 2015, before passing the torch to South African comedian Trevor Noah. Stewart will serve as "The Daily Show" host on Mondays starting Feb. 12, and appear at least through the 2024 election cycle. Since his 2015 exit from "The Daily Show," Stewart has kept busy as the executive producer of CBS' "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and weekly spots on Apple's streaming service via his show "The Problem With Jon Stewart," which was recently canceled. Stewart is also an avid philanthropist and has lobbied for healthcare benefits for veterans and 9/11 first responders.

NEW YORK (AP) — Comedian Jon Stewart is rewinding the clock, returning to “The Daily Show” as a weekly host and executive producing through the 2024 U.S. elections cycle. Comedy Central on Wednesday said Stewart will host the topical TV show, the perch he ruled for 16 years starting in 1999, every Monday starting Feb. 12. Two former correspondents in particular got massive boosts — Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. '”The show's abrupt end was reportedly triggered due to clashes between Stewart and Apple over its coverage of stories around China and artificial intelligence. A spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about who will host “The Daily Show” after the November election.

And after Trump won that election, many — including myself — believed that if only Stewart had not abdicated his late-night show in August 2015, Trump might well have been defeated. On a serious note, I don’t actually believe my 2016 article had anything to do with Stewart returning. And if history is any guide, Stewart will get under Trump’s pathetically thin skin, surely causing him to lash out on social media. Just one example came shortly before Trump announced his 2016 run, when Stewart discussed the other GOP presidential candidates. For a comedian, having a person like Trump respond angrily on social media to your jokes is better than a standing ovation.

CNN —Jon Stewart is heading back to “The Daily Show.”The comedian, who during his 16-year run as host of the Comedy Central program established it as an entertainment and cultural force, will return to host the show each week on Mondays starting February 12, Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios announced Wednesday. After exiting “The Daily Show” in 2015, Stewart signed a deal with Apple to host a show for the technology company’s nascent streaming service. Convincing Stewart to return to “The Daily Show” is a major coup for Comedy Central. While Trevor Noah received critical acclaim for hosting program after Stewart exited, it never quite had the same cultural impact it did under Stewart’s stewardship. Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, which is responsible for much of the streamer’s content library, said episodes with Stewart will be available on the platform the day after they air on Comedy Central.
