REUTERS/Bernadett Szabo/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 9 (Reuters) - European budget carrier Wizz Air (WIZZ.L) on Thursday narrowed its annual profit forecast below analyst expectations, citing continuing macroeconomic uncertainty and difficult operating conditions. Wizz Air was also one of the main airlines hit by issues with RTX (RTX.N) engines this year and had said it would face a capacity reduction as a result. That knocked its net income guidance for the financial year to between 350 million euros and 400 million euros ($374.7 million to $428.2 million), down from 350 million to 450 million euros. The budget carrier posted operating profit of 522.9 million euros ($559.8 million) for the six months to Sept. 30, compared with a loss of 63.8 million euros a year earlier.

REUTERS/Ammar Awad/ Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK/LONDON, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Travelers are canceling or postponing planned vacations to the Middle East and North Africa due to fears of the Israel-Hamas conflict worsening, and as touring companies have also altered itineraries and canceled flights. Travel operators say the war is affecting demand for travel to nearby nations including Egypt, Jordan and Turkey. German airline Group Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) said on Thursday their Middle East bookings have not been affected by the war, with only an initial dip when the conflict started. Spanish travel agency Essentialist said it has canceled 75% of trips to the extended Middle East and Northeast Africa region. The conflict's effect on travel demand to the Middle East may extend beyond the holidays and even just neighboring countries.

Lufthansa reported third-quarter adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of 1.47 billion euros ($1.56 billion), up 31% year-on-year and slightly above average expectations for 1.43 billion in an analyst consensus published on the company's website. Lufthansa said bookings for the fourth quarter were up by double-digit percentages year-on-year. Costs were 0.9% lower than the same quarter last year despite rising inflation, while net profits were at 1.2 billion euros. Next year, Lufthansa expects the amount of seating capacity available to fliers to increase further to around 95% of pre-pandemic levels. Capacity will increase to 91% of pre-pandemic levels in the fourth quarter, they said.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Minister Benny Gantz also spoke at the briefing, reiterating that the war against Hamas is likely not near its end. Netanyahu doubled down on Israel's two goals in the war: to eradicate the military and governing powers of Hamas and to rescue all of the group's hostages. The prime minister warned civilians in Gaza to find safe areas as Israel intensifies its presence in the region. Gallant spoke on the complications of returning the hostages under Hamas. He said there might be a higher probability of rescuing the abductees as Israel's military pressure escalates, which Gantz emphasized in his own remarks.

Israel stepped up its ground and air offensive in the Gaza Strip overnight, rejecting the United Nations' demand for a humanitarian truce. "We reject outright the UN General Assembly despicable call for a ceasefire," Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said in a social media post on X, vowing to "eliminate Hamas." Overnight, Gaza saw "the heaviest and most sustained bombardment" to date, according to NBC News. Inside the besieged territory, one NBC crew member said it was "very dangerous everywhere," amid extensive shelling and bombings from above and on the ground. She moved to Los Angeles with her parents and her sister when she was 15. She attended the University of California, Los Angeles, for a year in the early 1950s and, after acting in plays in the Los Angeles area in the early and mid-1950s, appeared in her first movie role, a small part in Cecil B. Although she lacked a strong singing voice, she was cast as Tzeitel, the oldest daughter of Tevye the milkman, the show’s principal character. The syndicated columnist Leonard Lyons wrote that when Ms. Merlin was pregnant in 1965 with her daughter Rachel, Zero Mostel, who played Tevye, told the stage manager: “Joanna’s baby just kicked.

REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Oct 27 (Reuters) - U.S. Representative George Santos pleaded not guilty on Friday to a 23-count indictment accusing him of an array of corruption, including 10 felony counts that federal prosecutors added this month. Santos, 35, entered his plea before U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert in Central Islip, New York, on Long Island. The plea came one day after fellow Long Island Republican congressman Anthony D'Esposito called on the House to expel Santos, saying Santos was "not fit to serve his constituents." Republicans hold a 221-212 majority in the House, and at least several dozen would have to vote against Santos for him to be expelled.

General view of planes on the tarmac at Farnborough Airport, in Farnborough, Britain March 9, 2022. REUTERS/Henry Nicholls/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Britain's aviation regulator said on Thursday it would increase the amount airlines can be charged for air traffic control services to help national provider NATS recoup costs incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Airline executives last week called for new rules on passenger compensation in the event of such disruption. The average cost of UK air traffic services per passenger per flight would go up by 43 pence on average, to approximately 2.08 pounds, the CAA said. The process of raising price controls began before the NATS outage and is unrelated to the review and investigation into the glitch, it added.

Intra-European travel has been doing very well," said aviation analyst James Halstead, adding that limited planes meant ticket prices could stay high. Britain's easyJet (EZJ.L) said earlier this month it wanted to more than double profits and expand its fleet, even though fuel prices could mean higher ticket prices. Spot Northwest European jet fuel prices were at $957 per metric ton on Wednesday, up 5% from before the assault. JET FUELSome airlines have already warned that rising fuel costs will drive up ticket prices or dampen future earnings. He said ticket prices could go up by a mid-single digit percentage ahead of Christmas.

Photo: Nikki Ritcher for The Wall Street JournalIn the fast-moving world of artificial intelligence, talk about the future tends to focus on something referred to as “artificial general intelligence”—the stage at which AI will be capable of doing any job a human can do, only better. Perhaps no company is in a better position to talk about the potential benefits and risks of this so-called AGI than OpenAI (49%-owned by Microsoft ), the creators of the popular chatbot ChatGPT. The comments by Hezbollah's deputy leader, Sheikh Naim Kassem, came as Israel shelled and made drone strikes in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah fired rockets and missiles toward Israel. For Hezbollah, heating up the Lebanon-Israel border has a clear purpose, Kassem said: "We are trying to weaken the Israeli enemy and let them know that we are ready." Hamas officials have said that if Israel starts a ground offensive in Gaza, Hezbollah will join the fighting. "Do you believe that if you try to crush the Palestinian resistance, other resistance fighters in the region will not act?" Kassem said in a speech Saturday during the funeral of a Hezbollah fighter.

A convoy of trucks loaded with food, water and medicines began entering Gaza from Egypt via the Rafah crossing on Saturday morning. It comes as the Israel-Hamas war enters its 15th day and after another night of heavy bombing. Twenty trucks were estimated to have crossed from the Egyptian border, carrying essential goods that the U.N. described as "the difference between life and death for so many people in Gaza." The Rafah crossing, which is the only Gaza border that's not controlled by Israel, may also open on Saturday morning for foreigners to leave, according to the U.S. embassy in Israel.
