Brendan McDermid | ReutersThis report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our international markets newsletter. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. Markets are back to contending with rising oil prices, inflation possibly reaccelerating, fewer-than-expected rate cuts and potentially even a distant recession. The yield curve inverted in early July 2022 and normalized in early September. It's not inconceivable, then, for investors who take stock in what the yield curve signals to panic a little.

The tech trade lost some of its steam over the summer, and that could create opportunities for tactical trading in the fourth quarter, several investors told CNBC. The Nasdaq Composite rose 2.6% during the third quarter, lagging behind both the broader S & P 500 's gain of 5.5% and the small Russell 2000's jump of 8.9%. Still, many investors are cautious of abandoning the tech trade completely even after a few bumpy months. Even after the recent slump, those stocks still account for about 31% of the S & P 500, and even more in many funds focused on tech or growth. RSP 6M mountain This equal weight version of the S & P 500 outperformed the regular S & P 500, the Nasdaq Composite and the Dow Jones Industrial Average in the third quarter.

CNN —For months before the 1997 premiere of “The Puppy Episode,” the groundbreaking episode of Ellen DeGeneres’ hit sitcom “Ellen,” rumors swirled that the comedian and her fictional counterpart would come out as gay. Until “The Puppy Episode,” the character had rarely dated and mostly resisted romance, deviating from sitcom conventions of the time and frustrating network executives. Ellen Morgan never did get that puppy, but the episode made history as Ellen became one of the first out gay lead characters on TV. “That’s why it worked — because it was real.”How ‘The Puppy Episode’ got madeThe making of “The Puppy Episode” started with DeGeneres. "We have kind of a two-level house — it's not a two-story, but there are two levels," Smith-Frady told Business Insider. Brian Niccol and Elliott Hill are taking over Starbucks and Nike , respectively, just as a key market that weighed on their predecessors gets a boost. As China's economic stimulus takes shape, it could end up helping these global brands. Nike and Starbucks in China While the exact plans for Niccol and Hill are still unclear, the Chinese market seems like it will be an area of focus. At Starbucks, the company's leadership team in China has already been reshuffled since Niccol took over in September. Still, a rebound for China's consumer won't necessarily boost sales for Starbucks and Nike without better execution.

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida late last week and hit the southeastern United States and parts of western North Carolina particularly hard. The September jobs report was surprisingly strong , and the details show that growth came from many different areas of the economy. Within hospitality, food services and drinking places saw jobs jump by 69,000. Professional and business services grew by 17,000 jobs, which is a notable change for a category that had shed jobs in recent months. The only caution flag could be the rise in those with multiple jobs," Roach said. Two key areas that lost jobs last month were manufacturing and transportation and warehousing, though each category shrank by fewer than 10,000 jobs.

Oil prices keep pushing higher as tensions build in the Middle East, and the moves in crude appear to be weighing on the stock market. Overlaying the charts of the United States Oil Fund LP (USO) and the S & P 500 in recent days shows that the fund and the index appear to be inversely correlated. In other words, when the oil fund climbs during the day, the stock market tends to dip, and vice versa. This is a change from rest of the year, when there appeared to be little relationship between the price of oil and the broad stock market. In midday trading Thursday, U.S. crude oil prices were up 4% , and the USO had jumped roughly 3%.

Recent hiccups for Nvidia could be the start of broader weakness for the artificial intelligence boom, and investors should consider dialing back their exposure to the stock, according to one small equity research shop. But last quarter sequential growth slowed again and now I'm concerned that it can continue to slow in Q3 and Q4. Elazar is not completely alone in being skeptical of Nvidia, but it's definitely a contrarian stance. Of the 64 analysts tracked by LSEG, 58 have buy or strong buy ratings on Nvidia, with the remaining six having hold ratings. Nvidia's stock is up 700% since the start of 2023, so being bullish has been the right call for Wall Street analysts.
