Alaska Air shares just getting started Alaska Air Group has recently broken above a key resistance level and could represent a compelling option for investors searching for stocks earlier on in their uptrends. Alaska remained below that retracement level as well as a declining 200-day moving average until this week. Now we're seeing ALK power above $42 with an initial upside target at the 61.8% retracement level around $47. The momentum characteristics are consistent with bullish phases, with Alaska becoming overbought this week after a quick rise. While overbought conditions could indicate a short-term pullback in the coming weeks, we're inclined to assume this uptrend could be just getting started.

In the wake of Nvidia 's launch of powerful new artificial intelligence chips, Goldman Sachs is predicting major growth for memory chips used in AI systems. Called Blackwell, the new GPU chips from Nvidia that power AI models require the latest third-generation memory chips, also known as high-bandwidth memory (HBM/HBM3E). The investment bank expects the total addressable market for HBM to expand tenfold to $23 billion by 2026, up from just $2.3 billion in 2022. The Wall Street bank sees three major memory makers as prime beneficiaries of the booming HBM market: SK Hynix , Samsung Electronics and Micron . Investors have been cautious about the memory market for AI systems since all three major suppliers are due to expand manufacturing capacity and add downward pressure on profit margins.

The Communications Services Select SPDR ETF (XLC) , home of Meta, Alphabet and Disney, is doing one of the following at any given time this year: Breaking out, digesting said breakout and then breaking out again. We'll notice that the monster reversal happened a solid four months before the S & P 500 topped out in early 2022… and we can blame Meta (META) for that. Meta tailwind When META cracked back then, it took XLC with it. However, it, too, has a constructive chart pattern – a potential large base that is almost two years in length. This ETF is VERY illiquid, thus, it's not the best trading vehicle… That said, one particular holding has a similar looking pattern: Disney (DIS) .

Video of former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden is played during a hearing by the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol on June 13, 2022 in Washington. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Investors' emotions may run high in 2024, especially in the realm of politics as President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are poised for a rematch in this year's presidential election. "Politics have become increasingly more emotional," Moira McLachlan, senior investment strategist in AllianceBernstein's wealth strategies group, said Wednesday at Financial Advisor Magazine's Invest in Women conference in West Palm Beach, Florida. However, investors should avoid knee-jerk reactions by setting and sticking to an investment plan, strategists said. "It's so important to stay invested, and you have to try to take the emotion out of investing" to keep from doing something "detrimental" to your goals, said Kristina Hooper, chief global market strategist at Invesco.

Kent Nishimura | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesWest Palm Beach, Fla. — The U.S. Federal Reserve is likely to start cutting interest rates by the end of second quarter despite recent "hotter than expected" inflation data, according to Kristina Hooper, chief global market strategist at Invesco. The question has become, at what point — and how quickly — does the central bank start to cut rates in order to avoid plunging the economy into a downturn? Fed chair Jerome Powell said last week that the Fed may not be far off from throttling back. The Fed last raised interest rates in summer 2023; in prior interest-rate-hiking cycles, the Fed began cutting rates about 8½ months later, Hooper said. Jenny Johnson, president and CEO of Franklin Templeton, also expects the central bank to begin cutting rates this year, though in the second half of 2024 at Fed policy meetings in July or September.

"Fixed income returns, by contrast, come almost entirely from coupon payments, which can be taxable at the highest rates." You may also want to think about where you're holding these fixed income assets. The fourth step to save on taxes: Consider whether a buyback ETF or a dividend ETF is right for you. Woodard recently highlighted the iShares Core Dividend ETF (DIVB) and the Invesco BuyBack Achievers ETF (PKW) as buyback plays. Investors weighing a shift into dividend stocks may be better off focusing on companies with big share buyback programs instead, according to Bank of America. The idea behind focusing on stock buybacks is that companies that can use excess cash to reduce their share count through buybacks are likely on strong financial footing. This is more of a pure-play buyback fund, tracking the Nasdaq US Buyback Achievers Index. To be sure, stock buybacks are a frequent target of politicians and their tax treatment could change in the years ahead. One of Wall Street's favorite investment vehicles turns 25 years old on Sunday, but shows no signs of fading to the background as it ages. One of the main conversation points around the 2023 rally for the QQQ, and the entire U.S. market, is the dominance of just a handful of key stocks. Over the years, many key stocks have left the fund, including former top performers like Nextel Communications and Sun Microsystems, which were bought out. Related plays Competition in the ETF industry for the QQQ has expanded dramatically over the past quarter century, including from other Invesco funds. The broad market index has also posted gains in 16 of the last 18 weeks — something that, according to Deutsche Bank strategist Jim Reid, hasn't happened since 1971. However, some on Wall Street now fear the market may have overextended itself to the upside, clearing the way for a pullback from record levels. BTIG chief market technician Jonathan Krinsky also noted there's a divergence never before seen in Big Tech. Volmageddon refers to a massive volatility spike in early 2018 in which the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) more than doubled to more than 50. Bottom line: A short-term pullback in stocks could take place soon, if history is any guide.

Megan Jelinger | ReutersA flood of foreign solar components threatens efforts to build a domestic manufacturing base in the U.S. to support the clean energy transition, according to First Solar CEO Mark Widmar. A common type of solar panel used in the U.S. is excluded from Section 201 tariffs designed to protect domestic solar manufacturing, and a moratorium on tariffs against solar components imported from several Southeast Asian nations is in place. Biden vetoed legislation last spring that would have imposed tariffs on solar components from Cambodia, Malaysia and Thailand. "What this is doing is it's not allowing these domestic companies to scale," Widmar said. The company has intentionally overbooked to provide a buffer against the volatility in the solar market, he said.

Couple this with the multiple signals for exhaustion that are typical near market tops, it warrants taking action. Troubling technical signs We've seen the SPDR S & P 500 Trust (SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) both exhibit higher highs in price while momentum and their advance-decline lines print lower highs. And lastly, these same signals are showing up across the major sectors, and individual stocks that have led this rally such as Nvidia. Overall, these are signs of exhaustion for this rally and raises the probability of a pullback. With the Wall Street's fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index ( VIX) , trading just above 13, purchasing downside protection on a portfolio using SPY options is relatively inexpensive.

First Solar shares jumped Wednesday after reporting another solid quarter, with the company booked solid through 2026 and an order backlog that stretches into the end of the decade. First Solar is one of the few companies that has weathered the sharp downturn in the solar sector. JPMorgan has a price target of $226 for the stock, implying about 56% upside from Tuesday's close. Goldman Sachs lowered its price target for First Solar to $265 from $275 prior despite the company's strong quarter. The investment bank said solar module oversupply and potential changes to U.S. tax credits are key risks for First Solar moving forward.
