A majority of economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal said former President Donald Trump's policies would be more likely to reignite inflation than President Joe Biden's would. Eight of the economists in the WSJ survey said inflation would be worse under Biden than Trump. Meanwhile, the several economists who saw Biden as the bigger inflation threat cited large spending packages. Still, 51% of economists in the WSJ survey estimate that federal deficits will rise more under Trump, who has proposed making his first-term tax cuts permanent. Meanwhile, 22% of economists think the same for Biden, in part citing Democrats' historically higher support for government spending.

The reelection campaign of President Joe Biden started the day Friday facing the very real prospect that even more Democrats will call on him to quit the race against former President Donald Trump and allow a new nominee to top the ticket. "No one's saying that," said Biden, who was set to give a campaign speech in Detroit later Friday. Biden made it through the hour-long press conference and answered reporters' questions, prompting his campaign to declare victory over his naysayers. But his halting speech and his misstatements — such as referring to Vice President Kamala Harris as "Vice President Trump" — did little to win over members of his party. "I think I'm the most qualified person to run for president," said Biden.

What I am hearing from congressional Democrats about President Biden is this: He has done little to nothing to allay their fears. The caucus meetings House and Senate Democrats held this week were an airing of grievances and despair, but they didn’t chart a path forward. What they need is a process through which they can gather the information they need to make a final decision. There are two main camps among congressional Democrats. Representative Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is among those who told his colleagues that Biden should step aside.

The president noted he overwhelmingly won Democratic primaries, which is why nearly all of the convention delegates are currently considered to be pledged to him. Biden is correct that the Democrats’ rules allow delegates to vote for the candidate of their choice. She told me how the process of replacing Biden would work considering nearly all of the 3,949 pledged convention delegates are currently pledged to support him. Sort of legally, according to party rules, he could be replaced anytime up to the roll call at the convention. Party leaders may yet carry on with the plan as a way to squash questions about Biden.
