Make America Build Again
  + stars: | 2023-11-16 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +37 min
America is the sixth-most-expensive place in the world to build subways and trolleys. The solutions will cost trillions of dollars and require a pace of building unseen in America since World War II. Perhaps the single most pressing question we face today is: How do we make America build again? "For this class of projects, federal environmental laws are more the exception." The prospect of overhauling our hard-won environmental laws might feel like sacrilege to anyone who cares about the Earth.

Even as Home Depot forecast sales declines, the retailer had good news for investors and consumers on Tuesday. One Social Security disability applicant finally had a hearing scheduled for this month but did not live until the scheduled date, according to David Camp, interim CEO at the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives. While the patient sought help with 825 days left to live, Social Security wasted more than 500 days with its delays. From 2010 to 2022, claims for Social Security disability benefits declined by 37%, while claims for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, fell by 49%, according to Camp. Eliminating that phase of the process could free disability determination services staff to work on initial disability claims and reduce backlog, she said. The U.S. Department of Education will penalize student loan servicer Mohela, or the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority, for its failure to send timely billing statements to 2.5 million borrowers. As a result of Mohela's errors, more than 800,000 borrowers were delinquent on their loans, the Education Department said in a statement Monday. Higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz said he believed this was one of the first instances of the government withholding payment from a student loan servicer. "It is only fair for the loan servicer to be penalized for mailing late statements." Federal student loan payments were on pause since March 2020, due to the Covid pandemic, but resumed this month.

Why Illegal Border Crossings Are at Sustained Highs
  + stars: | 2023-10-29 | by ( Ashley Wu | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +7 min
Why Illegal Border Crossings Are at Sustained HighsFor the second year in a row, the number of illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border surpassed two million, according to government data released this month. The 2022 fiscal year set a record of 2.2 million illegal border crossings. Shifting U.S. policies, global migration patterns and changing migrant demographics all factor into the high levels of illegal border crossings of the past few years. Since then, the number of illegal border crossings has increased every month, and border patrol agents made nearly 220,000 apprehensions in September alone. They accounted for the third-most illegal border crossings in the past year, after Mexicans and Guatemalans.

Borrowers have said they faced long delays on customer-service lines, with many hanging up after hearing estimates of lengthy wait times, people familiar with the matter said. Borrowers have also complained about the guidance that customer-service representatives or the companies’ automated systems are providing.
