Big Tech's phony Trumpism
  + stars: | 2024-07-22 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +9 min
Before Andreessen and Horowitz formed their venture-capital firm in 2009, Andreessen was an incisive observer of Silicon Valley. Big Andreesen (meaning the current bloated billionaire model) also contradicts Little Andreessen (the earlier, leaner blogger) on the issue of regulation. The reason, he now claims, is that government used to leave Silicon Valley alone. He and his fellow Silicon Valley investor-class billionaires have been sliding rightward for years. It's that I didn't see that this is where Silicon Valley was always headed.

Increased shipments of Apple's iPhones will be a key "volume driver" for the supply chain, according to Morgan Stanley. But the situation is set to change, with Apple Intelligence predicted to be a "key iPhone replacement driver." It raised its price targets for several stocks in the Apple supply chain. Largan reported first-quarter revenue that was below expectations but Morgan Stanley believes that was the trough. Morgan Stanley said Genius has a "good chance" of making a breakthrough in the periscope high-end lens segment in the second half of this year.

Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple Inc., during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference at Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, US, on Monday, June 10, 2024. Apple on Monday released a preview version of its big new iPhone update. This year, however, the most important new service isn't in the public beta: Apple Intelligence. Apple says that Apple Intelligence will be released in a beta version this fall and users will be able to try it out this summer. Some of the promised Apple Intelligence features, like ChatGPT integration, and some Siri improvements, aren't expected to be released until later this year.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley designated Apple their top pick, raised their price target to $273 a share and reiterated their buy-equivalent rating. Apple Intelligence, however, represents an entirely new technology with the potential change how we all interact with our devices. And notably, replacement cycles are at an all-time high of 4.8 years, Morgan Stanley estimated. So, the reason to upgrade is going to be Apple Intelligence, a better camera, plus whatever other incremental upgrades we learn about later this year. Both Loop and Morgan Stanley said the AI-driven replacement cycle will lead to an increase in the average selling price of iPhones.

The Apple Vision Pro headset is displayed at the Fifth Avenue Apple store on Feb. 2, 2024 in New York City. Apple's mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, will become available in more countries outside of the U.S. on Friday. The Vision Pro will also hit the shelves in Canada, France, Germany and the U.K. when stores open. At one of Apple's largest stores in London on Regent Street, customers booked slots for demos with the Vision Pro. But the Vision Pro demos offer Apple a chance to convince people why they should drop $3,499 for its headset — far pricier than other mass-market headsets.

EU antitrust regulators on Thursday accepted commitments from Apple to allow access to its tap and go payments technology to rivals, bringing an end to a four-year investigation. "From now on, Apple can no longer use its control over the iPhone ecosystem to keep other mobile wallets out of the market. The iPhone maker now has until July 25 to implement the commitments, Vestager said. All developers will then be able to offer mobile wallets for iPhones with the tap and go technology, she explained. It added that there would be no changes to Apple Pay or the Apple Wallet following the probe.

Apple will for the first time allow banks, payment services and other app developers to use the underlying technology behind Apple Pay to make rival tap-and-go payment services, settling a long-running European Union antitrust investigation, regulators said on Thursday. The agreement applies only in the European Union, where consumers could see an influx of new apps and services to make payments on the go. Apple has until now refused to grant rivals access to the payment technology on iPhones, known as near field communication, essentially forcing people to use Apple Pay. “Apple has committed to allow rivals to access the ‘tap and go’ technology of iPhones,” Margrethe Vestager, the European Commission’s executive vice president, who oversees competition policy, said in a statement. The announcement on Thursday does not apply to Apple Watch, which also has tap-and-go payment technology, an E.U.

London CNN —Apple has yielded to pressure by European regulators to give rivals access to the contactless payments technology on iPhones, meaning that their users will no longer be limited to the Apple Pay mobile wallet. Under the agreement, third-party mobile wallet developers will gain free access to the standard technology used for contactless payments with iPhones, known as near-field communication (NFC) technology. Apple will also allow iPhone users to choose which mobile wallet to make the default wallet on their phones. “Apple Pay and Apple Wallet will continue to be available in the European Economic Area for users and developers.”The European Commission first raised objections against Apple’s tap-to-pay practices in 2022, having opened a formal antitrust investigation into Apple Pay two years earlier. That means rivals wanting to create apps or wallets using the tap-to-pay features on iPhones have been unable to do so and users have been forced to use Apple Pay for mobile payments.

A "good" price for something today may have seemed outlandish five years ago, and it's understandable to wonder whether today's price is just as fleeting. The whole idea of what's a good price for a 12-pack of carbonated soft drinks has changed dramatically over the past few years." Plenty of companies can move their prices, whether by using dynamic prices or downright raising prices, because they're the only game in town. The answer to getting accustomed to high prices is basically to forget what those numbers were in 2019.

But advancements in AI technology are already beginning to remove the need for volunteer helpers on the other end. Applications for blind users are just one area where AI is helping to advance what’s known as “assistive technology,” tools designed to help people who are disabled or elderly. New generative AI tools are especially promising for accessibility applications because they’re designed to understand and produce information in various formats, including text, audio, photos and videos. The effort, called the Speech Accessibility Project, involves collecting recordings from volunteers with conditions such as Parkinsons, Down Syndrome, ALS and other disabilities that can affect speech. “We don’t want to leave people behind … technology in general has the ability to level the playing field,” Andersson said.
