Protesters hold placards reading 'Abolish punishment for abortion' as they protest South Korean abortion laws in Gwanghwamun plaza in Seoul on July 7, 2018. efired/iStockphoto/Getty ImagesBy not passing abortion laws, the National Assembly is “not doing its job,” said Cho Hee-kyoung, a law professor at Hongik University in Seoul. Changing attitudes to abortionDespite the country previously having highly restrictive abortion laws, abortion has not historically been the lightning rod in South Korea that it has been in the United States. If overpopulation had once prompted the government to push abortions, South Korea was now dealing with the opposite problem. It is impossible to know the true number of abortions that take place each year in South Korea because the procedure is unregulated.

CNN —Suspicious packages were sent this week to election offices in more than 20 states, leading to an FBI investigation, triggering evacuations and rattling staff, according to a CNN survey of state offices and Associated Press reporting. “I am a gun owner, and I own a gun for probably the reason a lot of people do – for personal safety,” Harris, then a California senator, told reporters in Iowa. Harris’ office declined to share what year she first became a gun owner or any other details about the firearm and her ownership of it. But she did not run from her values on assault rifles and assault weapons,” the adviser said. Trump, Harris’ Republican opponent, is also a self-proclaimed gun owner. Walz, the Minnesota governor and Harris’ running mate, is also a gun owner.

A Philadelphia man admitted to reporting a hoax mass shooting and then a bomb threat in retaliation over a fantasy football argument, authorities said Wednesday. "On August 15th a man named (the victim) is headed around oslo and has a shooting planned with multiple people on his side involved. Norwegian authorities spent 900 man hour investigating and disproving that threat, Fish said. “While already being prosecuted for one hoax threat spurred by, of all things, his fantasy football league, Matthew Gabriel inexplicably decided to send another,” U.S. Attorney Jacqueline Romero said. Court documents did not outline the nature of Gabriel's beef with the University of Iowa student and Fish declined to reveal those details.

Gabriel wrote that the fellow fantasy football player was “headed around Oslo and has a shooting planned with multiple people on his side involved. Law enforcement officers in Norway and the US dedicated five days and hundreds of hours to investigating the threat, prosecutors said. While investigating Gabriel for the international hoax in Norway, prosecutors said they learned that Gabriel emailed another fictitious threat earlier this year – this time to the University of Iowa. In March, Gabriel emailed the university indicating the same fantasy football group member was threatening to “blow up the school,” which Gabriel knew was untrue, prosecutors said. Romero warned in her statement that hoax threats are a crime.

The FBI is warning election offices to be on the lookout after threatening letters containing suspicious substances were sent to the offices of multiple secretaries of state throughout the country. A senior law enforcement official confirms elections officials in at least six states received packages on Monday, but so far none of the packages have been found to contain any actual hazardous material. Secretaries of state, attorney general offices and state election offices in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Tennessee, Wyoming and Oklahoma were targeted. The FBI, United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and state and local law enforcement partners are investigating multiple letters containing suspicious substances which have been mailed to Secretary of State's offices. The incident is also the second time in the past year that threats have hit multiple state election offices simultaneously.

(The poll was conducted last week, before Sunday’s apparent assassination attempt against Trump.) What makes the Selzer survey so important is that it’s been accurate in an era when other pollsters have struggled. This Selzer poll could also be an outlier, and much could change between now and Election Day. But the current poll is a far better result than the previous Selzer survey from June – when Biden was still in the race. The bottom line: You’d much rather have the Selzer poll in your corner than not.

CNN —One of the best pollsters in America recently came out with its latest survey, and it’s good news for Kamala Harris. That result fell well short of the lead he had in preelection state polling. The fact that the Selzer poll is indicating a similar shift in Harris’ favor in Iowa makes me think the Wisconsin polls may be on to something. This Selzer poll could also be an outlier, and much could change between now and Election Day. The bottom line: You’d much rather have the Selzer poll in your corner than not.

In today’s edition, senior political editor Mark Murray breaks down where the polling stands 50 days out from Election Day. Plus, we look at how Donald Trump is dispensing with unity in his response to the apparent second assassination attempt against him. Where the 2024 race stands with 50 days to goBy Mark MurrayJust 50 days out from the 2024 presidential election, Democrats are in a stronger place than they’ve been in this entire year because of their switch in candidates, but the contest remains close. In turning so fast to Biden and Harris, Trump skipped past appeals for sympathy and even a perfunctory call for calm or unity. Some Trump allies believe that the campaign squandered an opportunity for unity following the first assassination attempt.

More than 4,000 people have descended here for the Future Proof conference , a vast social gathering designed to give younger registered investment advisors and other investment professionals access to what they want. What they want, apparently, is an intense desire to network with other RIAs and investment professionals and find ways to grow their business. Reimagining the financial conference Future Proof is the brainchild of Barry Ritholtz, co-founder, chairman, and chief investment officer of Ritholtz Wealth Management, and CEO Josh Brown. This is the third year for the conference, but Ritholtz and company have been doing conferences for 15 years. Iowa shifted from being a swing state to one where Republicans are firmly in the driver's seat. In Iowa, the gender gap is as pronounced as it is in many swing states. AdvertisementIn the latest Iowa poll, state voters gave Harris an 11-point point edge over Trump (53% to 42%) on the issue of abortion. The Iowa poll found that six percent of voters still back Kennedy, a decrease from June but still a number that could cause headaches.

Eight states will have constitutional amendments backed by Republican lawmakers on the November ballot designed to make clear that only American citizens can vote in elections in those states. But it’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote in elections in those states and at the federal level, and it rarely happens. Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, has long made false claims that noncitizens are voting in elections and that Democrats have helped them enter the country to cast those ballots. No state constitution in the U.S. allows noncitizens to vote. While Americans for Citizen Voting said it has no formal or informal relationship with the Trump campaign or the RNC, its chairman, Paul Jacob, said at a recent press conference that he hopes the ballot measures will help improve voter turnout.
