Zara's website is often ridiculed for being confusing. This helps Zara target aspirational shoppers who can't afford to splurge on high fashion. Luxury giants such as LVMH and Kering have seen sales slow in recent months, in part because aspirational shoppers are being squeezed. Zara stores have a minimalist look. It's reminiscent of the experience of browsing luxury brands online, she says, where customers looking to add a ready-to-wear item to their basket often have to find a boutique where the product is available first.

Last spring, my friends and I accidentally rented an electric car on a trip to Italy. I hopped on Google to figure out how people manage life with electric cars when they take so long to charge. A high-voltage charger would take just 30 minutes to get our car's battery to 80%. AdvertisementAfter seeing our confused faces, she clarified that we were getting an electric car. Our car's battery was nearly dead, so we figured we might as well take advantage of the forced stop and explore the town.

CNN —The 2024 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for their “foundational discoveries” that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks. Mimicking the brainAI has become shorthand for machine learning using artificial neural networks. Whereas the brain’s neurons communicate with each other through synapses, artificial nodes influence each other through connections. You can train an artificial neural network by developing stronger connections between the nodes, just like you can train the brain. CNN —This year’s Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine has been awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their work on the discovery of microRNA, a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated. Their research revealed how genes give rise to different cells within the human body, a process known as gene regulation. The Nobel Prize committee announced the prestigious honor, seen as the pinnacle of scientific achievement, in Sweden on Monday. Ruvkun conducted his research at Massachusetts General Hospital, and is a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School. Remarkably, the tree thrived and now stands 10 feet (3 meters) tall, although it has never flowered or produced fruit. Using DNA sequencing, the researchers identified the mystery tree as part of the Commiphora genus, but its exact species is unknown and likely extinct. Scientists aim to extract DNA from the remains to learn more about those buried there and whether they were related.

Lost biblical tree resurrected from 1,000 year-old seed

CNN —Botanists have grown a long-lost tree species from a 1,000-year-old seed found in a cave in the Judean Desert in the 1980s. But the scientists conducting the new research weren’t able to identify the type of tree from the seed alone. However, the sample didn’t match any of the known Commiphora species in her database. The tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Yet the tree, which is related to the myrrh tree that’s famed for its resin, never gave off any kind of scent.

The filing asserts that Trump knew that the claims he was spreading about the 2020 election were lies, with Smith's team arguing that Trump didn't believe his own falsehoods but instead spread them as part of his broader scheme to stay in power. Trump, Smith's team said, was informed that election night results might be misleading because it would take a while to count mail-in ballots, which were expected to be favorable to Joe Biden. Trump, Smith's team said, declared to his advisors that he "would simply declare victory before all the ballots were counted and a winner was projected" and publicly began laying the groundwork by telling his supporters he'd only lose if there was fraud. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung called the Smith team's filing “falsehood-ridden" and tied its release to the vice presidential debate, even though it was known to be coming soon.
