South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said Wednesday that he would back his state's defunct law banning same-sex marriage if the Supreme Court were to overturn its 2015 landmark gay marriage ruling. "Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think marriage ought to be between a man and a woman — just like I think that boys ought to play in boy sports and girls ought to play in girl sports," McMaster, 75, said. Cunningham appeared shocked, replying: "It's 2022 and Governor McMaster wants to ban same-sex marriage — you just heard that tonight, folks. If the landmark decision were reversed, it would once again fall to the states to decide on the legality of same-sex marriage. Lawmakers in Congress have introduced a measure that would federally permit same-sex marriage, the Respect for Marriage Act.
And in 2014 she broke barriers again, becoming the nation’s first out lesbian elected state attorney general. Nearly 3,000 miles west, Kotek became the country’s first out lesbian speaker of a state House of Representatives in 2013. This coming Election Day, these lesbian trailblazers could shatter glass ceilings once more, simultaneously becoming the first out lesbians ever elected governor in the United States. Kate Brown, who is bisexual and became the first openly LGBTQ person to be elected governor in 2015, and Colorado Gov. This past summer, some of those threats were pointedly directed at the LGBTQ community in Massachusetts’ state capital.
CHICAGO, Oct 17 (Reuters) - With planting roughly halfway complete, the 2023 U.S. hard red winter wheat crop is already being hobbled by drought in the heart of the southern Plains, wheat experts said. The drought threatens Kansas, the top winter wheat growing state, and Oklahoma in two ways: discouraging farmers who have not yet planted from trying, while threatening crops already in the ground from developing properly. About two-thirds of wheat in the United States, among the top five global exporters, is grown as a winter crop rather than spring. As a result, Justin Gilpin, chief executive of the Kansas Wheat Commission, expected the number of Kansas wheat acres planted for harvest in 2023 to remain steady with the 7.3 million acres seeded for 2022. A key driver of the drought is the La Nina weather phenomenon, which tends to favor warm and dry conditions in the Plains.
As CNBC Pro has previously reported, pet ownership in the U.S . is booming, and will help sustain a higher level of sales in the coming years. However, that 4% increase in pet ownership has resulted in an 11% gain in pet spending, it said. "Despite now being [circa] 30 months away from the start of the pandemic, pet care is still going strong," AllianceBernstein analysts wrote. That pace is faster than 8% global growth rate from 2021 to 2022 predicted by Euromonitor and Bernstein analysis, the report said. It owns Diana Pet Foods, and is the leading pet food ingredients company.

REUTERS/Elizabeth FrantzPORTLAND, Ore., Oct 15 (Reuters) - Biden says he was not the only one who thought British Prime Minister Liz Truss' original economic plan, which has led to a steep dive in the value of the pound, was a mistake. "I wasn't the only one that thought it was a mistake." He told reporters during a stop at an ice cream shop in Oregon as he helped campaign for Tina Kotek, who is running for Governor or Oregon. The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot plans to vote to subpoena former President Donald Trump during Thursday's public hearing, NBC News reported. The move to subpoena Trump has been under consideration for some time, sources familiar with the committee's plans told NBC. Trump is thought to be highly unlikely to willingly cooperate with the committee, which he repeatedly decried as a politically motivated witch hunt. A spokesman for the select committee did not immediately confirm the reported plan to vote to subpoena the former president. The committee's ninth public hearing, which was ongoing early Thursday afternoon, took a broad look at the findings from their investigation, interspersed with new clips and information.
Hundreds of University of Florida students held protests this week criticizing the anticipated appointment of Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., to lead the school. Sasse has said that as university president, he would do his best to represent the views of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students. But for some, his candidacy has called to mind the university’s anti-LGBTQ history and the extent to which many of them feel it continues to sideline their needs and experiences, four LGBTQ students told NBC News. The university’s LGBTQ+ Affairs office, for example, has a high staff turnover rate, he said. He said a “silver lining” of the protests was that many LGBTQ students made their concerns more widely known.
Ukraine says Russia fired 83 cruise missiles on Monday and that it shot down at least 43 of them. Both sides say the attack was on a huge scale, unseen at least since Russia's initial wave of air strikes on the first night of the war in February. Western military analysts have no firm figures for how many missiles Russia has left, but for months have pointed to indicators suggesting the supply is limited. Ben Hodges, another former commander of U.S. ground forces in Europe, said that despite Monday's attacks, Ukraine still appeared to have "irreversible momentum" on the battlefield. "Russia's logistics system is exhausted and no Russian wants to fight in Putin's war in Ukraine," he tweeted.
KYIV, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Russian missile strikes on Ukraine's power network caused blackouts in many parts of the country on Monday, deepening fears of outages this winter and prompting Kyiv to halt electricity exports. He warned civilians that "you need to be prepared for the consequences of such shelling, up to rolling blackouts." GRIM WINTER AHEADWith no end in sight to the war, Ukrainian authorities had already been warning of Russian attacks on critical infrastructure and preparing for a grim winter. The war has wrought huge damage to the energy network, and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine is in "cold shutdown" after being occupied by Russian forces.
The barrage of dozens of cruise missiles fired from air, land and sea was the biggest wave of air strikes to hit locations away from the front line, at least since the initial volleys on the war's first day, Feb. 24. The Russian leader said he had ordered "massive" long range strikes and he threatened more strikes in future if Ukraine hits Russian territory. Ukraine, which views the bridge as a military target sustaining Russia's war effort, celebrated the blast without officially claiming responsibility. 1/23 A smoke rises over the city after Russian missile strikes, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Lviv, Ukraine October 10, 2022. The European Union condemned Monday's "barbaric and cowardly attacks" on Ukraine, among a chorus of denunciations from Western countries.
For the first time in history, Black veterans are getting a monument to acknowledge their service and contributions in the U.S. military. The African American Veterans Monument (AAVM) was unveiled Saturday in Buffalo, New York, to honor Black veterans and active-duty military service members both past and present. The monument serves as a permanent marker recognizing the contributions of African Americans who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. “The African American Veterans Monument will enhance visitors’ understanding of the diversity in the armed forces throughout American history,” Hodges said. She said she hopes the monument will shed light on their service and contributions.
A FedEx Ground truck drives near a FedEx regional hub at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in Los Angeles, California, U.S., September 16, 2022. Investors, already frustrated by last year's overly optimistic estimate for the holiday shopping season, were disappointed with its profit warning on Sept. 15. Reuters spoke with Bradshaw and five other investors who bought FedEx stock when it looked cheap versus its more profitable and better performing rival United Parcel Service (UPS.N), believing a FedEx business revamp promised healthy returns. FedEx warned business conditions would worsen in the current quarter, which ends as the key Christmas package delivery season begins. Late last month, FedEx told Reuters it was confident in its "stress tested" holiday forecast for this year.

But some consumer advocates and doctors worry that those supplements don't have as many benefits as people think. "Our gummy vitamins have been on fire," CEO Matt Farrell told investors in a July earnings call. He said that Hero Nutritionals, founded in 1995, created the first gummy vitamin for the American market. A Perrigo representative said it no longer manufactured gummy vitamins, and it did not respond to further inquiries.) But the doctor had something to admit: He takes a gummy vitamin every day.
