LONDON — European markets headed for a higher open on Friday as investors weighed the outlook for the economy and looked to fresh data. European stocks had climbed Thursday, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 closing 1.25% higher after being boosted by gains in Asia-Pacific markets. Those widely continued their climb on Friday, still buoyed by China's announcement of stimulus measures earlier in the week. Economists are expecting headline PCE to have risen 2.3% on an annual basis and 0.1% from the previous month. Back in Europe, preliminary inflation data for September is expected out of France, and the latest German unemployment data is also due.

Australia's inflation rate has come within the RBA's target range in the month of August, easing from 3.5% in July to 2.7%., according to a Wednesday release from the country's Bureau of Statistics. The drop puts the rate below the Reserve Bank of Australia's target range of 2%-3% for the first time since August 2021. He said that while the relief programs will bring headline inflation to the top of the RBA's target range, the RBA will be "looking through" these subsidies and focusing on core inflation. He writes, "the path of core inflation back to the target range has stalled somewhat, and it is hard to see a major improvement in the near term. We think the bank will need to see three more inflation prints before they are comfortable embarking on an easing cycle."

A view of the headquarters of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), before a press conference in Zurich, Switzerland, March 21, 2024. It was the first major Western central bank to reduce interest rates back in March. Domestically, Swiss inflation remains subdued, with the latest headline print pointing to a 1.1% annual increase in August. Further cuts in the SNB policy rate may become necessary in the coming quarters to ensure price stability over the medium term," it added. He added that the central bank may nevertheless have to reduce rates again to retain inflation in the 0-2% target range.

Stock futures traded near the flatline Thursday night as Wall Street awaits a key inflation reading. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average were little changed, as were S&P 500 futures . In the fiscal fourth quarter, the warehouse retailer reported earnings of $5.29 per share on $79.70 billion in fourth-quarter revenue. The so-called PCE is the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation metric, and policymakers and Wall Street alike are hoping for figures that show a cooling trend. The three major indexes are higher for the week, with the S&P 500 up nearly 0.8% and the 30-stock Dow Jones Industrial Average on pace to rise 0.3%.

Bank of Japan board members are split over the future path of interest rates, minutes of the central bank's monetary policy meeting in July showed. The board also pointed out that import prices had turned positive again, and upside risks to prices required attention. Some board members pointed out that "it was appropriate for the Bank to make moderate adjustments" given such risks. Another member pointed out that medium-to long-term inflation expectations were not anchored at 2%, and prices remained vulnerable to downside risks. As such, the BOJ should avoid a situation where the market expectations for future rate hikes "increase excessively."

Read previewThere's a 70% chance the US economy is either in a recession or headed toward one in the months ahead, according to Bloomberg Economics Chief US Economist Anna Wong. The one that stands out most to Wong is the much-talked-about sustained rise in the unemployment rate. "Initially, in all the recessions, this is how the unemployment rate tends to rise," she said. Another key metric economists watch to judge whether the economy is in recession is consumer spending, which makes up around two-thirds of GDP in the US. LendingTreeWong believes wealthier Americans are spending due to the wealth effect, where high asset prices boost consumer confidence and fuel spending.

Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) at the central bank's building in Sydney, Australia on May 2, 2022. The hawkish stance sent the Australian dollar 0.4% higher to $0.6864, the highest this year, and markets pared the chance of a December rate cut to 59% from 64% before the decision. Markets had wagered heavily on a steady outcome given underlying inflation remained sticky and the labor market held up surprisingly well. Governor Michele Bullock has used every opportunity recently to stress that the central bank does not expect a near-term rate cut. The RBA already trails other central bank in cutting rates, and the political pressure is ramping up for an easing.

Commuters cycles past the Bank of England (BOE), left, in the City of London, UK, on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. The central bank's Monetary Policy Committee's interest rate decision is scheduled for release on Sept. 19. LONDON — The Bank of England on Thursday said it would hold interest rates steady following its initial cut in August, even after the U.S. Federal Reserve opted for a jumbo rate cut the day before. The Monetary Policy Committee voted by 8 to 1 to hold, with the dissenting member voting for a 0.25 percentage point cut. Many strategists had expected a smaller 25 basis point cut at the September meeting, despite market pricing through this week pointing to more than 50% probability of the more aggressive option.

GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has called for Republicans to shut down the government if they can’t pass the voting measure known as the SAVE Act. Many Democrats are pushing for an extension into December that would not include the SAVE Act, which is viewed as a non-starter in the Senate. “House Republicans don’t seem to have any plan for actually keeping the government open, so the Senate will step in,” Schumer said in floor remarks. “Many Republican House members, as many of you have reported, are smart enough to know if there is a shutdown, it will be a Republican shutdown. Anadolu | Getty ImagesLONDON — U.K. inflation held steady during the month of August, data from the Office for National Statistics showed Wednesday, and matched analyst expectations. Headline CPI had come in at 2% in May and June, in line with the Bank of England's target rate. Services inflation — which is closely watched by the BOE, given its dominance within the U.K. economy and its reflection of domestically-generated price rises — rose to 5.6% in August from 5.2% in July. Core inflation, excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, came in at 3.6%, up from the 3.3% recorded in July. "Despite recent data showing a stagnation in UK economic output and easing wage growth, core inflation remains sticky, with services inflation rising from 5.2% to 5.6% which will weigh heavily on the BOE's decision-making," Carter said in a note.

Washington CNN —The House failed on Wednesday to pass a six-month GOP government funding plan that included a controversial measure targeting noncitizen voting, an effort pushed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. The House vote was 202 to 220, with 14 Republicans voting against it, two Republicans voting present and three Democrats voting for it. Johnson would not reveal on Wednesday ahead of the planned vote what he would do if the GOP government funding plan fails and said he has spoken to Trump “a lot” about government funding after the former president floated a government shutdown. Trump had previously said that if Republicans don’t receive “absolute assurances” about election security, they should not pass a funding extension. The six-month funding plan from House Republicans would have extended government funding until March 2025.
