Twenty years ago, when I was 35, I left my life in the greater Boston area to pursue a job opportunity in glamorous Milan. I was on a permesso di soggiorno (residence work permit), which allowed me one year to find another job. With a few months left on my permit, I received an offer to work for a U.S. multinational with offices in Italy. I was so glad that I hung in there and bet on myself and my life in Italy. Ultimately, I learned valuable things about my peers and the business over a relaxing meal or coffee.

Vance was swift to name China the “biggest threat to our country,” in an interview with Fox News Monday as the RNC got underway. He’s made countering what Washington says is a security threat from China a cornerstone of his foreign policy, even as he’s worked to stabilize communications with Beijing. And Beijing – which is grappling with its own economic woes – may be preparing for more friction if Trump takes office. The substance of Biden’s China policy – in terms of sanctions, tariffs and competition – has not been that different from Trump’s, she noted, and Biden has been keener on strengthening alliances and coalitions to counter China together. “But the style of Biden’s China policy is more predictable and stabilizing.

Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, a key member of the House committee that investigated the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, sent President Biden a four-page letter this month that compared the 81-year-old commander in chief to a tiring baseball pitcher and urged him to consult with fellow Democrats about whether to continue his campaign. Mr. Raskin opened his letter, which was dated July 6 and was obtained by The New York Times, by writing that he shared Mr. Biden’s “mad love for American democracy and freedom.”The letter, the authenticity of which Mr. Raskin confirmed on Thursday, begins with nearly three pages of lavish praise for Mr. Biden. Mr. Raskin writes that he wishes to “remind you of your true greatness as a leader” and spends several paragraphs recounting Mr. Biden’s legislative achievements and defense of democracy. But the crux of the letter is a four-paragraph metaphor comparing the president to the Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martínez, a Hall of Famer who was left on the mound for the eighth inning of Game Seven of the 2003 American League Championship Series despite being tired. Mr. Martínez allowed three runs, tying the game before the Yankees won with a walk-off home run in the 11th inning that denied the Red Sox a trip to the World Series, which they had not won in 85 years.

A flight attendant “either didn’t hear or ignored his request and continued past our row,” the post read. “I calmly reached behind me and lightly tapped (the attendant’s) arm to get his attention to again ask for a cup of ice for my son,” Davis wrote. “During questioning, it was rightfully determined by the agents that this flight attendant was inaccurate in his accusations and the agents profusely apologized,” Davis wrote. Terrell Davis, a Pro Football Hall of Fame member, said he was detained by the authorities on Saturday in California after he “lightly” tapped a United Airlines flight attendant’s arm to ask for a cup of ice — an episode that he said left him feeling “humiliated, embarrassed, powerless and angry.”Mr. Davis, 51, was traveling from Denver to Orange County, Calif., on a United Airlines flight with his family, he wrote in a statement released by his lawyers. During the flight, Mr. Davis said, his son asked for a cup of ice, and that the flight attendant “either didn’t hear or ignored” his son. Mr. Davis said he then “lightly tapped” the attendant on the arm to get his attention, and that the attendant shouted, “Don’t hit me,” and rushed to the front of the plane. “I was confused, as were the passengers in front of me who witnessed the exchange,” Mr. Davis wrote. “I thought nothing of it other than this particular employee was incredibly rude and blatantly wrong in his accusations of me hitting him.”

Two Democrats with a powerful network of friends are circulating a proposal for President Joe Biden to bow out of the 2024 race and launch an expedited Democratic primary to choose a new nominee before the August convention. The proposal comes as pressure builds on Biden to exit the race following his stumbling debate on June 27 against former President Donald Trump. "Overnight, Biden is hailed as a modern-day George Washington, not an octogenarian clinging to power with a 37% approval rating," the proposal reads. The next phase of the plan is a "blitz primary," where prospective Democratic candidates submit their bids and delegates of the Democratic National Convention ultimately narrow down the list to six contenders. The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposal.
