She had been selected to run for Team GB at the Paris Games after completing the 2023 Chicago Marathon in a time of 2:23:21, just 26 seconds off Hassan’s Olympic record time in Paris.

Videos of her breaking went viral, drawing online ridicule and speculation as to whether the whole thing was a hoax. But Gunn was uncowed, re-enacting the kangaroo hop as she celebrated with fellow Australian Olympians ahead of the closing ceremony on Sunday. She also wore a green-and-yellow Australian Olympic tracksuit rather than the streetwear favored by her rivals. Amid the criticism, Gunn’s performance has also drawn an outpouring of support from the international breaking community and others who lauded her originality, including the Australian prime minister. The World DanceSport Federation, the international governing body for breaking, said it had offered her mental health support.

A Head-Spinning Debut

Breaking is a new sport at this year’s Summer Olympics — at least we’ll call it a sport for the sake of the Games. You probably know it as break dancing, the art form in which performers spin, pose, glide and dance across the floor with incredible athleticism and charisma. The event debuted yesterday in Paris with the women’s, or B-Girls’, competition. Ami Yuasa of Japan, known as B-Girl Ami, bested Lithuania’s Dominika Banevic, or B-Girl Nicka, to win breaking’s first gold medal. The dance spread nationally and globally through movies like “Beat Street” and pioneering crews providing demonstrations in countries like Japan and England.

On Friday, breaking makes its Olympics debut at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. This form of dance, created by Black youths in the Bronx in the early 1970s, has traveled far from its birthplace. Support for hip-hop education in the States typically comes from nonprofit organizations, after-school programs and for-profit dance schools. Despite breaking’s American roots, it has never been institutionally supported in public schools as part of a coordinated national policy. The Lycée Turgot, a public high school housed in a majestic 19th-century building, has for the past seven years been home to France’s premier national hip-hop dance program.

The CVS pharmacy logo is displayed on a sign above a CVS Health Corp. store in Las Vegas, Nevada on Feb. 7, 2024. CVS Health on Wednesday slashed its full-year profit outlook again and announced a new plan to cut $2 billion in expenses over several years as higher medical costs squeeze the company and the broader U.S. insurance industry. CVS also cut its unadjusted earnings guidance to a range of $4.95 to $5.20 per share, down from at least $5.64 per share. Those ratings help Medicare patients compare the quality of Medicare health and drug plans. Medicare Advantage, a privately run health insurance plan contracted by the federal Medicare program, has long been a driver of growth and profits for the insurance industry.

It might seem more like an artform than a sport, but breakdancing — known professionally as breaking — is making its Olympics debut this month in Paris. The Olympics adopted the same name to honor its culture and history and preserve its authenticity, Nifontov said. As breaking makes its Olympics debut, Cooper said a part of him fears it will lose some of the cultural qualities that make it a unique artform. Breaking events are scored on five factorsLike gymnastics or figure skating, breaking competitions are scored by a panel of judges. Back then, breaking’s fundamental movements provided escapism and expression, competitive and spontaneous physical performance breathed to life by the dawning genre of hip-hop. But breaking — not “break dancing,” a term coined by media and disdained within the breaking community — no longer belongs solely to New York City. In Paris, Olympic breakers representing countries like Japan, Lithuania and Morocco will compete one-on-one in battles waged for a global television audience. Technology like VHS tapes, DVDs and video platforms like YouTube allowed breakers around the world to learn moves and iterate new ones. “That’s why I love it so much, because it’s never the same,” said Menno van Gorp, who will represent the Netherlands.

Stretches for becoming more flexible

Becoming more flexible as an older adult is still doable, but collagen loss means it’s also harder to achieve. Stretch yourself looseThe stretches experts recommend for flexibility can depend on personal needs, but they do have some suggestions for full-body flexibility. Stretches for hip flexors, including the cat-cow yoga pose and compound stretches that target multiple muscle groups, are especially helpful for people with desk jobs, experts said. Stretches should be held for 15 to 30 seconds, and you can sprinkle in stretches throughout your day by taking a break from work every 45 minutes, or try 20-minute sessions, experts said. Other pros of pliabilityAs you’re working your way to a more flexible body, you may find stretching produces even more payoffs than just the flexibility itself.

Aerosmith, one of rock's top-selling acts, announced the end of its touring days Friday, saying that lead singer Steven Tyler's vocal injury has proven to be enduring and that he’ll never fully recover. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible," it said. "We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision — as a band of brothers — to retire from the touring stage." It's not clear if the end of touring for Aerosmith means the end of live performance. The band suggested it would be difficult to replicate its telltale sound without Tyler’s extraordinary and often raspy voice.
