Oil stocks showed signs of life Friday, boosted by a sharp rise in crude prices. CTRA YTD mountain Coterra Energy YTD performance A bright spot in Friday's trading was Club holding Coterra Energy (CTRA), which rose as much as 9% before giving back some of those gains. "This is the beginning, I think, of a real trend in oil," Jim Cramer said Friday. Our calculus on energy stocks has changed as a result of this vicious move. And, for once, the success of a Marvel film could bode well for the future of its longtime adversary. On the theatrical side, DC Studios has announced five new projects that will roll out starting in 2025 with Gunn's own "Superman: Legacy." "And I think Marvel Studios, sooner rather than later, needs to tell us what's going on with Spider-Man." He sees this as the result of predictable plotlines within the genre that are repeated across both studios' films. Marvel Studios
Pricing power is what's allowing many companies — including seven of our Club holdings — to support revenue growth and enhance, or at the very least protect, profitability during an earnings season marked by a still-elevated inflationary environment. When we're talking about "pricing power," it's the ability of companies with strong brands to raise prices without seeing too much impact on demand. Here's a list of Club holdings with pricing power, starting with a closer look at P & G. PG YTD mountain Procter & Gamble's stock performance year to date. LIN YTD mountain Linde's stock performance year to date. Halliburton has exhibited strong pricing power due to massive demand from global end markets, benefitting from years of under-investment in drilling.

Ed Sheeran is on trial in federal court in Manhattan, fighting a copyright infringement lawsuit. Laughter broke out Wednesday as an expert played a nerdy 'AI' version of Marvin Gaye's soul classic. "Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on baby," the voice continued, without apostrophes or groove. "It was hideous," Griffin Townsend told Insider of the robotic rendition of her father's song that was played for jurors on Wednesday. "Most pop songs can fit over most pop songs," he told jurors of the two songs' overlapping chord structure.
In addition to its top-and-bottom line beats, Halliburton also posted better-than-anticipated operating margin and operating cash flow. Halliburton's free cash flow disappointed. As a reminder, in January, Halliburton announced a new framework to return at least 50% of annual free cash flow via dividends and buybacks going forward. Halliburton's free cash flow came in at negative $105 million in three months ended March 31, compared with estimates of positive $134 million. It's important to remember the weakness is largely due to normal seasonal trends, a dynamic also impacting Halliburton rival SLB, which last week reported negative first-quarter free cash flow, too.

Oleksiy Chernyshov, chief executive of Naftogaz, told the FT that he held meetings in Washington with Halliburton and ExxonMobil in recent days. The talks with Exxon and Chevron are at an early stage and would take longer to yield results, FT said. The talks are a part of Ukraine's push to increase natural gas production. Ukraine has substantial reserves of natural gas, but consumption far outstrips production and the country is forced to import gas. Last month, Chernyshov said he plans to increase its natural gas production by more than 5% in 2023 to 19 billion cubic metres despite the Russian invasion.

BARONE The book could not be staged as-is now, just as much of opera makes you cringe the closer you look. VINCENTELLI The “Phantom” legacy is most visible in business terms, with a generation of blockbusters that run for years, decades even. The current “Sweeney Todd” revival has luscious orchestrations but the staging and most of the performances are so timid. A couple of years ago I saw “Phantom” at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki. “Phantom” is similar to Puccini not only in its music, but also in its specificity; you can’t really stretch Puccini, conceptually, and with “Phantom,” you have to either go big or go home.
First-quarter earnings per share for the S & P 500 are set to decline by 7% compared with the year-ago period, Goldman Sachs said in a note to clients Wednesday. That's why we spend less time worrying what the S & P 500 will earn and focus more on how individual companies are performing . Some S & P 500 sectors, like consumer discretionary and energy, are poised to grow profits compared with 2022, according to Goldman. Within the Club's portfolio, we found 14 companies that are set to report positive earnings growth this earnings season, according to FactSet estimates. As always, we'll analyze both our companies' earnings reports and consider their guidance to ensure our investment rationale is still intact.
But the first week of trading of the second quarter got off to a rocky start, forcing us to recalibrate our approach to the market. But as the week progressed, stocks came under pressure amid signs the labor market is softening, fueling fresh investor fears of a recession. That prompted many investors to dump technology stocks in favor of defensive sectors like health care and consumer staples. We plan to stick with these three oil stocks, given energy prices are likely to move even higher amid ongoing geopolitical turmoil. Thursday We ended the trading week by purchasing this automation-focused industrial giant on weakness.
