How to Care for Your Kid’s Teeth

Pop quiz: At what age should kids first see a dentist? Mott Children’s Hospital, roughly half of parents who responded said they believed they could wait until children were 2 or 3 before going to the dentist. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children first see a dentist within six months of the eruption of their first tooth, or by age 1. After that, the organization suggests children see a pediatric or general dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups. Because kids retain some of those teeth until the age of 12 or 13, it’s important to keep them healthy, said Dr. Judy Yip, a pediatric dentist in Garden Grove, Calif. Untreated cavities can lead to serious tooth infections, she said, and can even harm incoming adult teeth.

Spanish farmer Miguel Moreno was an early adopter of so-called cover crops. Spain's drought-hit olive oil production slumped to 663,000 tonnes last year, less than half the average of 1.45 million tons recorded in the previous four harvests, according to the government. In January, it began subsidising farmers who use cover crops as part of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). She said the company was pushed both by customers such as Walmart in the U.S. and by regulation to buy olive oil from producers using sustainable practices. Ecology professor Manzaneda is also coordinator of EU-funded project SOIL O-LIVE and is testing methods for coaxing Albacete's degraded earth back to health.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Legislative workers at the California Capitol are close to forming their first labor union after state lawmakers approved a bill Wednesday that allows them to organize. But despite California lawmakers' pro-union stance, the people who work for them have never been allowed to form a union. An attempt to do so last year failed to get a vote in the state Assembly. INVOLUNTARY SERVITUDEThe state Assembly approved a proposal to change the state constitution to remove exemptions to involuntary servitude as a punishment for crime. The proposal would have to get a two-thirds vote in the state Senate, which doesn’t plan to vote on it until next year.

A government-run tent camp in the town of Asni has swelled overnight, with many more tents and makeshift facilities being built. But much of the help directed to these areas is privately organized by small groups of volunteers from across the country. They brought some of the supplies to a village in Ouirgane that was completely destroyed by the quake. Ivana Kottasová/CNNHalf the residents of the village are now camping out in a little grove just off the main road. The families left behind are huddled together sharing food and water, grieving as a community.

New Yorkers fed up with a tough housing market are making the pilgrimage to Jersey City. New York City housing is becoming more elusive and expensive, and Jersey City is an attractive option. That's not to say that Jersey City is much cheaper, but there are more options: Along the Hudson River waterfront in Jersey City, dozens of luxury high-rises have sprouted up within the last 10 years, some filled with their own coffee shops, heated pools, and rooftop dog runs. Now, he knows at least eight to 10 acquaintances who have taken the Jersey City plunge since he moved. When it comes to the space and amenities that Jersey City provides, "once you have it, you can't go back."

The California bill would make gender affirmation one factor among many that courts already have to consider in custody proceedings, including whether a parent has been abusive and how much contact the child has with the parents. The bill would not require judges to prioritize whether a parent affirms their child's gender identity over other factors. The state Senate passed the resolution, and it now heads to the Assembly. State Sen. Shannon Grove, a Republican from Bakersfield, said she didn’t think other states would agree to that. The bipartisan California bill would not legalize the sale of the drugs.

State and federal laws already ban discrimination based on sex, race and religion. India has banned caste discrimination since 1948, the year after it won independence from Great Britain. Many major U.S. colleges and universities have added caste to their non-discrimination policies, including the University of California and California State University systems. In February, Seattle became the first U.S. city to ban discrimination based on caste. California lawmakers are in the final two weeks of the legislative session.

Last weekend on Fire Island in New York, far from the bright lights of Broadway, Patti LuPone performed at the Ice Palace nightclub for some of her most adoring fans. These die-hards, sometimes called LuPonettes, included a man who had seen Ms. LuPone in the 1979 production of “Evita” and another who had a caricature of her tattooed on his back. “I first fell in love with Patti when I saw the ‘Evita’ commercial,” he said. In addition to its Friday night Underwear Party, its stage has hosted Chita Rivera, Liza Minnelli and Alan Cumming. “Patti has played the greatest venues in the world, but for her to play here it’s about connecting with her most fervent fan base,” the club’s co-owner, Daniel Nardicio, said.

A Speck of Old Iceland in Ice-Cold Lake Michigan

A refuge from the modern worldIn the fall of 1870, four young bachelors from the Icelandic fishing village of Eyrarbakki landed on Washington Island. By the end of the century, the island had become a center of Icelandic culture. Washington Island is the second-oldest Icelandic settlement in America, and if you know where to look, I assured Mel, hints of that history still abound. Established in 1904 by Ben Johnson, another Eyrarbakkian, the colonial-style Hotel Washington now offers eight small guest rooms and two shared bathrooms above a farm-to-fork restaurant awash in natural light. Once the island’s social hub, the hotel retains an old-world feel, despite the updates.

REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON/CHICAGO, Aug 24 (Reuters) - A highly mutated COVID variant called BA.2.86 has now been detected in Switzerland and South Africa in addition to Israel, Denmark, the U.S. and the U.K., according to a leading World Health Organization official. It has since been detected in other symptomatic patients, in routine airport screening, and in wastewater samples in a handful of countries. That the known cases are not linked suggests it is already circulating more widely, particularly given reduced surveillance worldwide, she said. There have been nine such cases detected as of Aug. 23 and the variant was also found in wastewater in Switzerland. Jha and others, including the European public health agency and COVAX, the global program for getting vaccines to the world's poorest, said COVID surveillance and defenses could be reactivated in the event of a major infection wave.

CNN —There is a crisis brewing in the olive oil industry. The situation is all the more concerning as it comes on the heels of a bad olive harvest last year, following Europe’s hottest summer on record. In Spain, the world’s biggest olive oil producer, production plunged to roughly 620,000 metric tons, compared to the five-year average of around 1.3 million metric tons, said Holland. This summer, heat gripped swaths of the Mediterranean region, bringing a “heat hell” scientists say would have been virtually impossible without climate change. “It’s getting to the stage where the concerns are significant not just for olive oil but for a lot of crops,” Holland said.
