A 13-year-old girl was the world's first patient to get a cell therapy called base editing in May. Base editing is a new gene-editing technology that could lead to cures for many diseases. Alyssa, 13, was the first-ever patient to receive a base-edited cell therapy after enrolling in a clinical trial in May. Base editing allows scientists to make ultraprecise changes to single letters of DNA in cells. Alyssa, a teenager in Leicester, England, received a base-edited cell therapy to treat her leukemia.
In her experiments to date, Watsa has been able to detect Sumatran tiger DNA in soil and determine the sex of the animal. Paw prints made by 4-year-old Sumatran tiger Rakan at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park help researcher Mrinalini Watsa develop a cost-effective technique to detect tiger DNA in soil. He believes DNA techniques could help scientists better understand how some tigers disperse between different areas, which can be hard to pick up with cameras. “DNA techniques will also be useful where camera trapping is difficult,” he added, such as the remote, mountainous regions in Southeast Asia. The analysis of tiger DNA in soil samples could help forensic investigations in the battle against the illegal wildlife trade.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test kits for COVID-19 use what’s known as gene cloning – not reproductive cloning – to detect the presence or absence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but social media posts claim that humans are being cloned using COVID-19 PCR tests. The claim appears to originate from an Aug. 18 segment of the Stew Peters Show titled, “Patent PCR Test Linked To Human Cloning Video Shows Animal Experiments, Cross Species Genetics” (here). The 2015 paper by Hoseini and Sauer explains methods for gene cloning with PCR and used a gene encoding a red fluorescent protein as its example. PCR tests for COVID-19 cannot be used for human cloning. Molecular cloning, or gene cloning, that is described in a 2015 paper about using PCR to copy individual genes is an entirely different process.
A new pact is a priority for WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as his second five-year term at the head of the global health agency gets underway. It seeks to shore up the world's defences against new pathogens following the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed more than 6.5 million people, according to the WHO. The global health agency itself is facing calls for reform after an independent panel described it as "underpowered" when COVID-19 struck, with limited ability to investigate outbreaks and coordinate containment measures. The WHO already has binding rules known as the International Health Regulations (2005) which set out countries' obligations where public health events have the potential to cross borders. Adopted after the 2002/3 SARS outbreak, these regulations are still seen as functional for regional epidemics like Ebola but inadequate for a global pandemic.
A Baltimore-based biotech startup has raised $56 million to develop a cancer blood test. Haystack Oncology has raised $56 million in a Series A round to continue development of its cancer blood test in 2023, the startup said Wednesday. The Baltimore-based biotech says it has a blood test that can find tiny, lingering traces of cancer in patients who've already had cancer and received treatment. Those cancerous cells shed small pieces of their DNA into the bloodstream, and Haystack's test detects those molecules. Haystack's blood test, called a liquid biopsy, can find signs of cancer that aren't detectable by imaging like CT scans.
Prime Medicine shares could pop the company works toward a gene therapy that could address nine out of every 10 genetic mutations, Jefferies said Monday. The company went public Oct. 20 through an initial public offering. "PRME believes that key advantages of Prime Editing technology lie in its versatility, precision, effectiveness and breadth." Yang said Prime Medicine has a unique focus on search-and-replace genome editing, which can theoretically use one-time therapies to address 90% of the approximately 75,000 known genetic mutations. Search-and-replace can do more gene conversions without off-target editing or breaking double-strands of DNA, which allows it to have broader impact, Yang said.

That means vineyards - which have for centuries transplanted cuttings to ensure robust and flavourful fruit - are now looking for grape types that are more resistant to climate change. It has determined that vines aged 35 years and older appear to cope better with climate change because they are more genetically diverse. The lab's ultimate goal is to ensure winemakers plant specific vines proven to be "more adaptable to climate change conditions", said Carbonell. "We are very worried about climate change," said Iñigo Torres, director of Grupo Rioja, an association representing 60 wineries that together account for 80% of sales. The grapevines were transplanted after being carefully selected from another vineyard where RODA studies the behaviour of old vines - some up to 110 years old.

The Black Death which ravaged Europe 670 years ago may still be harming humans today a study found. A scientist holds up a tooth from human remains buried in the 1300s. The Black Death, one of the greater killers in human history, was the perfect model to look at, Lee said. In just five years between 1346 and 1350, the Black Death, a pandemic caused by the bacteria Yersinia Pestis, killed tens to hundreds of millions of people, many before they were old enough to have children. Human remains being excavated from the plague pit in East Smithfield.
Other omicron subvariants that have piqued the interest — and concerns — of scientists read like a viral alphabet soup: BQ.1, BQ.1.1, BF.7. Ever since the omicron variant emerged, it's been omicron all the way down, with omicron subvariants splitting off into their own subvariants. Barouch's study was small, including just 35 people who'd had either the Covid vaccine or an omicron infection. Most, regardless of prior infection, had at least three doses of Covid vaccine. The World Health Organization is tracking more than 300 omicron subvariants worldwide, Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said during a media briefing Wednesday.
Ark Invest's Cathie Wood believes innovators in DNA development are the most undervalued corner of the market. "I believe that today the genomic revolution is most misunderstood and underappreciated," Wood said at Morgan Stanley's AlphaCurrents Conference last week, according to a transcript provided by the bank. "The stocks in the last year, this growth stock bear market, has ravaged the genomic space. Ark Invest has a specific exchange-traded fund dedicated to this space: ARK Genomic Revolution ETF (ARKG) . However, the fund has wiped out half of its value this year as rising rates hit growth stocks particularly hard.
It was the first GM wheat strain in the world to receive such approval. No other global seed company has publicly endeavored to develop GM wheat since 2004, when giant seed maker Monsanto, now owned by Bayer AG, dropped plans to develop GM wheat that could withstand its weed killer Roundup. In 2020 he had threatened to halt wheat imports from Argentina after its government approved Bioceres' GM wheat. A new landmark is the recent approval in Nigeria, the only country to fully approve imports of HB4 wheat grains. Trucco said Russia's invasion of Ukraine and severe droughts in Europe and China had shifted the needle on drought-tolerant GM wheat.
After 25 years at the pharma giant Roche, the drug hunter Martin Stahl is leaving to join a biotech. CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts — A longtime drug-hunting veteran is leaving one of the largest drugmakers to lead the science division at the biotech startup LifeMine Therapeutics, Insider has learned. FogPharmaThe big draw for Stahl was LifeMine's approach to discovering drugs. With its genetic-database approach, LifeMine hopes to greatly speed up how long it takes to develop fungi-derived drugs. Stahl said LifeMine's approach leaned on nature, rather than medicinal chemists, to design the drugs.
Bonaventure Equity is raising $30 million to bet on life-science startups in the cannabis industry. A 'life sciences' approach to cannabisO'Brien says he broadly defines "life sciences" to encompass three different buckets: ag-tech, biotech, and healthcare. Investors poured $2.7 billion into cannabis startups in 2021, up from $1.5 billion in 2020, according to the data provider PitchBook. Bonaventure isn't the only venture firm focused on the life sciences aspect of cannabis. Óskare Capital, a new fund, is raising $170 million to invest in medical and pharmaceutical cannabis in Europe, as Insider has reported.
