CNN —Esteban Wood still remembers the time a 74-year-old Mexican farmer in Homestead, Florida, collapsed on the job from extreme heat. Such outdoor workers include lifeguards, transportation employees, ironworkers, agricultural workers and letter carriers. States like California, Colorado, Minnesota and Washington, have some heat protections for workers but they are not uniform or sweeping. For example, Minnesota’s protections only apply to indoor workers while California’s heat protections include both indoor and outdoor workers. The government must implement wage protections alongside heat protections, said Dr. Kristina Dahl, a principal climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Every year, Bill Gates — and, until she left, Melinda French Gates — would hold multiple meetings with executives of the Gates Foundation to approve plans and budgets, and review strategies. For many, the meeting might be the only direct opportunity to interact with, and impress, Gates and French Gates. AdvertisementGates and French Gates followed the presentations closely, usually saving questions for the end. The former couple sought to maintain a professional relationship, giving themselves at least two years to see if they could work together, with the understanding that French Gates would leave if they couldn't. One former senior employee compared the style of discussion to the Socratic method, often used in law schools by professors who push students to reasoning through dialogue.

But when my eldest son was a young child, there was no vaccine for rotavirus. Mohamed Bassyouni Gates MRIIt just so happened that my research back then supported clinical trials evaluating a vaccine candidate for rotavirus. In Saudi Arabia, where we were living at the time, my two younger children received their rotavirus shots as their doctors recommended. And researchers at the National Institutes of Health in the US determined that the vaccine also “substantially reduced hospitalization and deaths in Africa.”The expectation was that many lives would be saved around the globe thanks to the rotavirus vaccine. This could be the first new TB vaccine in 100 years.

The GOP’s 2024 party platform calls for the repeal of President Joe Biden’s executive order on AI, which Republicans say "hinders AI innovation." Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer speaks to NBC News from the balcony of his Capitol office on Thursday, Aug. 1. “We have lots of AI proposals in the defense bill because AI has national security concerns,” Schumer told NBC News. It would require federal agencies to assess the potential risks of using AI before purchasing or deploying AI systems. If my kids are inside, they may knock on the door to see if they can play. My kids get play dates without us having to schedule or drive anyone, and more often than not, everyone plays by the rules. Adults often stop by to chat, too, which is also nice for me; our backyard has become something of a neighborhood hangout. There are rules, and all the kids have to follow themIt's simple enough: everyone needs to be having fun. Other parents on my block also let kids come by to play, and each household (and yard) may have slightly different rules.

In the summer of 1991, Mary Gates, the mother of the Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, convinced her workaholic 35-year-old son to spend the July 4 holiday at Hood Canal, a scenic, outdoorsy location about two hours from Seattle that had long been the family getaway. The Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, was among the guests. When Mrs. Gates tried to introduce her son to Mr. Buffett, however, he brushed her off, saying that he didn’t want to meet a “stockbroker.”But the two men hit it off immediately. Mr. Gates was surprised by the penetrating questions Mr. Buffett directed at him about the software business, and found himself warming to the avuncular Midwestern billionaire. Once, recounting the story of their meeting to students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Mr. Gates called it an “unbelievable friendship.” Mr. Buffett quipped, “The moral of that is, listen to your mother.”

Whenever billionaire philanthropist Melinda French Gates contemplates a tough decision, she seeks input from her three closest friends of more than 30 years. "If you're in town, you walk," French Gates said. For example, the trio of friends was the first to know when French Gates began to consider ending her marriage to Bill Gates after 27 years, she said — and they offered her unanimous support. French Gates learned the importance of quality over quantity in friendships early in life, she said. "You might realize that you have plenty of people you have fun with, but no one to confide in," Schulz and Waldinger wrote.

Far-right demonstrators chanted anti-migrant, anti-Muslim slogans at the London rally that turned violent on Wednesday. He added that, while the algorithm played a part, there was also a “huge amount of organizing happening” in a variety of different places that are not algorithmically oriented – for example in far-right groups on the instant-messaging platform Telegram. Like what was being shared on X and other platforms, the Telegram group “Southport Wake Up,” also posted false information about the alleged suspect. Hours after the attack, the group’s creator sent out the details for the first protest: Meet near a Southport mosque on Tuesday. The “Southport Wake Up” group is still active, and on Thursday, posted calls for similar disruptions at Muslim centers in other cities across England.

Sometimes, what separates successful people from everyone else isn't what they say — it's what they don't say. Other sayings, like "keep me in the loop" or "just checking in," can unintentionally come across as passive-aggressive, Slack executive Jaime DeLanghe told CNBC Make It in 2022. In particular, the best employees typically steer clear from these three phrases and sayings, according to CEOs, psychologists and linguistics experts:'It is what it is'There's one phrase bosses and colleagues don't want to hear when they're facing a problem at work: "It is what it is." Using it, however, can appear highly passive to other people and tarnish their trust in you, McWhorter said. That means there's one sentence that can frustrate such CEOs: This is how we've always done it.

Recent unrest at two Israeli military bases has highlighted a growing divide among Israelis about the conduct of their soldiers, and revived a deeper and older battle over the nature of the Israeli state and who should shape its future. Two of the soldiers were later released. Dozens of protesters gathered outside the base in solidarity with the detained soldiers, including at least three far-right lawmakers from the ruling coalition. Hundreds later massed outside Beit Lid, a second base in which the 10 men had been brought for interrogation. The incidents were widely broadcast across Israel, spreading an image of disunity at a time when the country is fighting enemies on multiple fronts.

A decade later, it's clear that Nadella followed his own counsel as he seeks to establish Microsoft as a dominant force in AI. So, by 2016, Microsoft ditched its mobile business and sold the Nokia phone line to follow Nadella's new vision for the company. This cemented Nadella's vision to build up its open-source software offering, solidifying Nadella's vision to boost Microsoft's open-source software offerings. CFO Amy Hood said on Tuesday that Microsoft's AI bets will be monetized "over 15 years and beyond."

Israeli military police detained at least nine military reservists on Monday at an Israeli army base where thousands of Palestinians from Gaza have been held, taking them in for questioning as part of an investigation into “suspected substantial abuse of a detainee” there, the military said. Several Israeli media outlets reported that the Palestinian detainee had been hospitalized with a serious injury to his anus; some outlets reported that the reservists were accused of sexually abusing the detainee. The reservists’ detentions soon sparked a crisis at the base, called Sde Teiman, where videos posted on social media showed reservists shouting in anger about the raid — a rare instance of Israeli soldiers confronting their own. The tensions escalated, videos showed, when a crowd of flag-waving civilian protesters broke into the base through its metal gates in support of the detained reservists. By late afternoon, the military said police and soldiers had driven the protesters out of the base.
