The U.S. power grid, much of it built nearly a century ago, is being strained by storms, floods and heat waves fueled by climate change even as electric vehicles and artificial intelligence are boosting power demand, Granholm told reporters in a call. In 2021, the Texas grid collapsed during a cold spell, killing more than 200 people and leaving millions of homes without power. The projects will help bring more than 35 gigawatts of new electricity onto the grid from wind and solar and other renewable power and invest in 400 microgrids, or self sufficient energy systems, the Department of Energy (DOE) said. It was the first round of selections under the broader $10.5 billion grid resilience and innovation partnerships program managed by DOE. In southeastern Pennsylvania, PECO Energy (PECI.UL) will boost grid reliability and resilience through substation flood mitigation, replacing aging infrastructure, and deploying battery systems for backup power.

Donors understand as well as anyone that pulling their funds won’t inflict significant financial damage on Ivy League institutions, which boast huge endowments, my colleague Nathaniel Meyersohn reports. But he said that financial threats from donors were not the right solution to influencing universities’ positions on these issues. At 5 million subscribers paying $3.99 a month, Snapchat+ is set to earn around $239 million in annual revenue. Still, analysts are intrigued by Snap’s user growth, especially for a company that’s been around for over a decade. “In my view, there’s significant value for a company that’s growing its installed base at this level,” said Angelo Zino, senior equity analyst at CFRA Research.

Donors often give for specific purposes — facilities, faculty research, technology on campus, athletics, scholarships and financial aid for low-income students. The Wexner Foundation said it’s breaking off ties with Harvard University, alleging the school has been “tiptoeing” over Hamas’ attacks. Lawrence Summers, the former president of Harvard and US Treasury Secretary, has criticized the “morally unconscionable” student statement and Harvard leaders’ response. In addition to a loss of overall body fat, participants in the study lost dangerous visceral belly fat, which could lead to diabetes, heart disease and stroke. If visceral fat is about 10% of your body’s total fat mass, that’s normal and healthy, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Too much visceral fat, however, can create inflammation, contributing to chronic disease. A lower-calorie Mediterranean diet could include proteins such as salmon, chicken breast and tuna, as well as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and olive oil. However, “only participants from the intervention group decreased grams of visceral fat mass,” while visceral fat mass remained unchanged in the control group, according to the study.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will have season-ending shoulder surgery, coach Shane Steichen said Wednesday. Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the April NFL draft, suffered a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder at the end of a short run against Tennessee on Oct. 8. He stayed down for several minutes before walking slowly to the team’s medical tent, his right shoulder drooping. Richardson did not return to that 23-16 victory and went on injured reserve last week. He threw for 577 yards, three TDs and one interception while completing 59.7% of his throws in four games.

The Eagles (5-1) got one more chance to win when they got the ball back, but the defense stiffened — as it had all game. CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire presidential primary filing period starts Wednesday, a ritual unruffled by either a changing of the guard or changes to the nominating calendar elsewhere. They need only meet the basic requirements to be president, fill out a one-page form and pay a $1,000 filing fee. But he wouldn’t be the first reelection-seeking incumbent missing from the primary ballot: President Lyndon Johnson won the 1968 Democratic primary as a write-in, though a shockingly strong-second place showing by Sen. Eugene McCarthy helped push him out of the race. Scanlan, who served as deputy secretary of state for 20 years, said he was excited to welcome candidates starting Wednesday. “That was Bill’s style, and he was really, really good at it.”

Hamas was surprised by the success of its attack in Israel, a Hamas leader told the Associated Press. Hamas' attacks show Israeli intelligence failed to predict an offensive from Gaza, experts said. Israel's inability to anticipate the attack was a "colossal" intelligence failure, analysts say. Israel has one of the most sophisticated intelligence networks in the Middle East. AdvertisementAdvertisementIsrael was rocked by a wave of unprecedented attacks carried out by Hamas fighters on Saturday, with reports of thousands of rockets being fired into the country and gunmen roaming the streets. Observers have noted that Israel's failure to anticipate the attack, which likely took months of complex planning, is a failure of their famously sophisticated intelligence agencies. There have also been unconfirmed reports of IDF soldiers and Israeli civilians being captured by Hamas fighters and taken to Gaza.

As the Supreme Court starts a new term, experts are closely watching a case that could have sweeping effects on the U.S. tax code, including corporate revenue and future wealth tax proposals. The plaintiffs are fighting taxes on earnings that weren't distributed to them by arguing about the definition of income, which could have broader implications, according to policy experts. Designed as a transition tax, the legislation required a one-time levy on earnings and profits accumulated in foreign entities after 1986. While the 16th Amendment outlines the legal definition of income, the Moore case questions whether individuals must "realize" or receive profits before incurring taxes. It's an issue that has been raised during past federal billionaire tax debates and could affect future proposals.

New York CNN —Corporate America is breathing a sigh of relief after lawmakers narrowly avoided a chaotic shutdown of the federal government. Business leaders and economists had warned a shutdown would have hurt the economy by causing vast uncertainty, significant disruptions and hurting confidence. But then House Speaker Kevin McCarthy abruptly shifted course and moved to pass a bill with support from Democrats. The Chamber commended lawmakers who voted to keep the government open on a bipartisan basis and called for Congress to finish the job. LONDON, Oct 2 (Reuters) - British house prices in September were 5.3% lower than a year earlier, matching their fall in August which was the biggest annual drop since 2009, figures from mortgage lender Nationwide showed on Monday. In month-on-month terms, prices were unchanged in September after a 0.8% fall in August, Nationwide said. Britain's housing market has slowed as borrowing costs mount, but the fall in house prices so far remains much less marked than their jump of about 25% between the start of the coronavirus pandemic and September last year. The combination of rising wages and lower house prices and mortgage rates would probably improve affordability in the housing market over time although it was set to remain subdued in the interim, he said. Transaction volumes for flats were holding up better than other property types, possibly reflecting how prices for smaller homes did not rise as much during the pandemic, Nationwide said.
