This year's test, which was devised before the latest banking crisis, checked if banks would stay above the minimum 4.5% capital ratio during economic stress and macroeconomic instability. Banks will disclose their new stress capital buffer in the coming days and Well Fargo expects a reduction in the capital requirements for JP Morgan, BofA and Goldman. Goldman Sachs analysts said market focus will likely return quickly to potential increases to stress capital buffer and tougher regulations against the backdrop of Basel III revision. Citigroup (C.N) rose 0.7%, but trailed its peers as analysts said higher stress capital buffer would hamper its efforts to boost profitability. "Citi will now have the highest CET1 requirement among our banks at 12.3%," J.P. Morgan analysts wrote in a client note.

Of the six regional lenders that were part of the test, Bank of New York Mellon (BK.N) and US Bancorp (USB.N) added 1.5% and 0.8%, respectively. J.P. Morgan downgraded the bank to 'neutral' in anticipation of an increase in capital requirements hurting its profitability. Citigroup (C.N) rose marginally, but trailed its peers as analysts expect that an increase in its stress capital buffer would hamper its plans to improve profitability. "Citi will now have the highest CET1 requirement among our banks at 12.3%," J.P. Morgan analysts wrote in a client note. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Banks Index (.SPXBK), tracking a basket of large-cap bank stocks, is up 0.9% quarter-to-date, but has fallen 12.2% so far this year.

Banks' commercial real estate portfolios performed better than expected, showing $65 billion in losses or 8.8% of average loan losses, slightly down on last year's 9.8%, the Fed said. "Some may ask how all the banks can get a regulatory thumbs-up when the industry just went through a period of turmoil. The test assesses whether banks would stay above the required minimum 4.5% capital ratio. The average capital ratio for the 23 banks was 10.1%, the Fed said. That compares with 9.7% last year, when the central bank tested 34 lenders against a slightly easier scenario.

China starts to slow yuan's one-way slide
  + stars: | 2023-06-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Analysts said that together the moves showed official unease at the yuan's downward momentum and that they could slow but perhaps not halt a decline, given the dour economic outlook. "They are sending more signals now they're uncomfortable ... they would like to slow the yuan weakness," said Moh Siong Sim, a currency strategist at Bank of Singapore. The yuan ended Monday at a seven-month low of 7.2425 per dollar and was at 7.2105 in Tuesday afternoon trade. BACK FOOTThe push back comes as investors sour on China, with data showing China's vaunted rebound faltering. Analysts said moves to halt the yuan's slide were not yet as firm as last year, when regulators rolled out measures to encourage capital inflows, but might be enough to slow selling.

The central bank on Wednesday will release the results of its bank "stress tests" which assess how much capital banks would need to withstand a severe economic downturn. The annual exercise, introduced following the 2007-2009 financial crisis, is integral to banks' capital planning, dictating how much cash they can return to shareholders via dividends and share buybacks. Despite the turmoil, and the exam being the hardest in years, bank analysts and executives expect the 23 lenders being tested will show capital in excess of regulatory minimums. While that will not affect capital, it will be used to assess potentially employing multiple scenarios in future stress test exercises. "In an environment of ever-changing risks, stress tests can quickly lose their relevance if their assumptions and scenarios remain static," said Barr in December.

Hong Kong CNN —Hong Kong’s currency is facing its biggest test since the global financial crisis of 2008. The steep fall is a sign that investors are ditching the Hong Kong dollar. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) is committed to keeping the Hong Kong dollar between 7.75 and 7.85 per greenback. People walk past the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) on May 4, 2023, in Hong Kong, China. “Pegging the Hong Kong dollar to the US dollar encourages such transactions to be carried out in Hong Kong and under Hong Kong law, even if neither party is based in Hong Kong.”This helps to create jobs and prosperity in Hong Kong, while also benefiting mainland China.

Hong Kong/Seoul CNN —South Korean prosecutors have indicted a former Samsung executive for allegedly working with competitors who tried to build a copycat semiconductor factory in China. In a Monday statement, the Suwon district prosecutor’s office said it had charged a 65-year old former employee of what it called “Company A” over data theft. Prosecutors said the executive then tried to use that information to build a “duplicate” plant in the Chinese city of Xi’an, about 1.5 kilometers (one mile) away from a Samsung semiconductor factory. News agency Yonhap identified the second company as SK Hynix, another South Korean chip giant. Reuters reported that the attempt to build the new plant using Samsung data between 2018 and 2019 ended in failure due to funding issues.

The business conference will draw about 2,000 attendees from Greater China, in what will be one of the region's biggest-yet business delegation to Saudi Arabia, according to one person with direct knowledge of the matter. "From the perspective of both capital and new market, the Middle East, Saudi Arabia are really good new choices for Chinese companies and investors," said Henry Zhang, president of Hong Kong-based private equity firm Hermitage Capital. "Since late last year, a large number of Chinese funds have rushed to the Middle East looking for new investors. For the upcoming conference, Chinese entrepreneurs in attendance represent a range of industries -- from renewable energy and artificial intelligence to biotech, finance and tourism. "Previously, I had to actively pitch Chinese companies to consider Saudi Arabia as their destination of outbound investment and overseas expansion.

US banks could face 20% hike to capital requirements - WSJ
  + stars: | 2023-06-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
June 5 (Reuters) - U.S. regulators are preparing to tighten rules for large banks, which could raise their capital requirements by 20% on average, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, to boost the financial system's resilience after a spate of midsize bank failures this year. Regulators are on track to propose the changes as early as this month, the WSJ reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr said the central bank was "carefully considering" rule changes for larger regional banks. The WSJ said that the precise amount of capital requirements will depend on the bank's business, with U.S. megabanks with big trading businesses expected to face the largest increases. Banks such as Morgan Stanley (MS.N) and credit card giant American Express (AXP.N) that are heavily dependent on fee income, such as from investment banking or wealth management, could also face large capital increases, the WSJ said.

Biggest US banks could see 20% boost in capital requirements, Wall Street Journal reports. Midsize regional banks underwent extreme stress earlier this year, with First Republic and two others failing, yet the biggest banks in the US may be the ones hit with tougher regulatory rules. The proposals are expected as soon as this month and will vary based on the bank's businesses, according to the Journal. After the financial crisis of 2007-2008, regulators worldwide sought to bolster banks' capital requirements. And the recent turmoil in the US regional banks only underscored the current strength of the mega banks, suggesting that the focus on increasing capital at the biggest institutions was misplaced.

The Chinese yuan is one of the top contenders challenging the USD's dominance as a reserve currency. However, Beijing may not be fully supportive of making the yuan the reserve currency of choice. Here's why even China isn't that keen on de-dollarizing the world economy and making the yuan the top reserve currency. So, the US will need to contend with ever larger amounts of deficit, in order to maintain its pre-eminent reserve currency position. Given the issues standing in Beijing's way, it's unlikely for the yuan to take over the greenback's position as the world's reserve currency of choice, said Green.
