CNN —Vandalism has come to another US historic site, Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg National Military Park, where a pivotal battle of the Civil War was fought. “Our hearts sank when these two cases of vandalism were reported within days of each other,” Park Superintendent Kristina Heister said in a statement. “We were fearful that the graffiti carved into the rock may be there for future generations.”Luckily, park staff was able to clean and remove all traces of the vandalism. FOREST PARK, Ga. — Celery was used to conceal more than 2,300 pounds of methamphetamines that federal agents discovered in a truck at a farmers market outside Atlanta, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said. In what the DEA called one of the largest seizures of its kind, agents confiscated the drugs being delivered to the Atlanta State Farmers Market in Forest Park, authorities said at a Monday news conference, WAGA-TV reported. The agency had learned about a semitrailer coming across the Mexican border, and agents tracked the drugs to the farmers market, said DEA Special Agent in Charge Robert Murphy. “This was contained in a cover load of celery,” Murphy said. Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.
