New York CNN —Spirit Airlines, the ultra-low cost carrier known for charging bargain-hunting passengers for anything and everything, is introducing business class seating. Farther back in the plane Spirit will also allow passengers to pay more for seats in rows where the middle seat will not be sold. Spirit looked at merging, first with another ultra low cost carrier, Frontier Airlines, and then with JetBlue Airways. Last week Southwest Airlines, the nation’s older lower fare carrier, announced it would end its open seating policy it has used throughout its history and let passengers reserve seats for the first time. However, Southwest has not announced any plans to offer wider, business class seats.

The carrier hired star attorney David Boies to seek damages from CrowdStrike and Microsoft for the July 19 computer outage that forced Delta to cancel about 6,000 flights, CNBC reported on Monday. AdvertisementWhile no lawsuit has been filed, Delta plans to seek compensation from CrowdStrike and Microsoft, CNBC reported. Between customer agreements that favor CrowdStrike and SolarWinds largely beating the SEC, CrowdStrike stands a good chance in court, Sanchez said.

However, the rule “likely exceeds DOT’s authority and will irreparably harm airlines,” a three-judge panel of the Fifth U.S. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines were among the airlines, joined by trade group Airlines for America and the International Air Transport Association, which sued in May to block the rules. The industry said the rule would require airlines to “spend millions” to re-engineer their websites, diverting resources from other projects. Many large US airlines boosted fees this year for checked baggage. U.S. airlines collected $7.1 billion in baggage fees in 2023, up from $6.8 billion in 2022.

Was it the Parisians who bluntly told travelers "do not come" to Paris during the Summer Games? London, Athens and Atlanta all saw a drop in summer visitors when they hosted the Summer Games, said Grant. Empty Airbnbs and unsold ticketsHotels, too, are feeling the pinch of Paris' summer slowdown, with occupancy rates expected to drop to 60% in early July, down some 10 points from 2023, according to Paris' tourism board. Airbnb also said "domestic interest" for stays during the Games has never been higher than in the weeks leading up to Paris Games. U.S. airlines are reducing their capacity through the end of the year in a bid to cool an oversupplied domestic market that has led to lower fares and reduced profits despite strong summer travel demand. Airlines now expect to grow flying about 4% year over year during the final three months of the year. U.S. airline executives have noted strong demand but a U.S. domestic market that's awash in flights, forcing them to dial back growth plans, which could drive up fares. Reducing capacity could drive up fares for consumers and boost airlines' bottom lines, if travel demand holds up. Getting fares in the market that are profitable to airlines but palatable to consumers is crucial for the industry as consumers have pulled back on spending in other areas.

The tragedy is sadly far from unique; extreme heat is turning ordinary activities deadly. Heat is the deadliest type of extreme weather, and the human-caused climate crisis is making heat waves more severe and prolonged. So far Nashville has mostly escaped the historic heat that keeps enveloping this country in waves of misery. We have also been spared the kind of severe weather that is the bread and butter of summer disaster movies. People seek escapist fare like “Twisters” in part to experience imaginatively the kind of danger that hasn’t reached them in ordinary life. The first grown-up movie I ever saw in a theater was “The Towering Inferno,” but I’m not normally one for disaster movies. I wanted to see “Twisters” because I was curious about how it addresses climate change.

Many of those potential picks have been offering Harris’ campaign informal glimpses of how they’d perform as her running mate through appearances on cable news shows. Then, Harris’ campaign and its allies must rapidly revise plans for the Democratic National Convention, which is set to start on August 19 in Chicago.

Open seating helped Southwest load and unload passengers, which Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said meant more on-time departures and cost savings on Thursday’s earnings call. Even as other airlines switched to assigned seats in recent decades, Southwest kept its boarding process the same. ‘Sad day’Some loyal Southwest customers vented their frustration about the policy change on social media. She worries she will have to pay extra for her traditional A-group seats as Southwest moves to assigned seats. But activist pressure did not factor into the company’s move to assigned seats, Southwest CEO Jordan said on the earnings call.

That helps confirm what investors are realizing: small caps are the place to be. When large caps sneeze, the market catches a coldThe small-cap breakout has coincided with large technology stocks breaking down. Small caps also tend to have less of an international presence than their larger peers, so they don't miss out as much when converting overseas profits to dollars. Read previewWhen Southwest Airlines announced Thursday it was dropping its unique plane seating system, I was among the (apparently small) group of people who reacted with disappointment. In announcing the policy change, Southwest said their research showed 80% of customers preferred an assigned seating system, while 86% of new customers did. AdvertisementIt also means navigating the chaos that can be found at essentially every other airline's gate besides Southwest. Some families also love Southwest's open seating policy for this reason. But without the open seating, the airline is losing part of what sets it apart — even if that means gaining new customers.

Southwest said customers were clamoring for these changes – when people switch to a competitor from Southwest, the company said the No. But the change will also help the company charge some passengers more for their tickets. “The research is clear and indicates that 80% of Southwest customers, and 86% of potential customers, prefer an assigned seat,” said the airline in a statement. Southwest doesn’t charge for carry on bags and has long allowed passengers to check two bags for free. The premium seats, which will offer more legroom, will not be available until 2025 as it will require reconfiguring its planes.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris is less than two weeks away from naming her own running mate. Democrats close to the process say the roster of leading contenders being vetted still includes North Carolina Gov. A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS showed no clear leader in a matchup between Harris and Trump. The former president holds 49% support among registered voters nationwide to Harris’ 46%, a finding within the survey’s margin of sampling error.
