Still, that’s far lower than the 528 drop boxes that the commission was aware of in 2020. PoolNick Ramos, the executive director of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, a voting rights group that has pushed for more drop boxes, said he was discouraged by the number of municipalities that had decided not to use drop boxes this election. “Drop boxes are safe, they are reliable and secure.”Changing legal statusFor years, ballot drop boxes were legal in Wisconsin with little controversy or attention, and in 2020, they became a key tactic for municipalities to encourage safe voting during the coronavirus pandemic. A conservative group filed a lawsuit to ban drop boxes in Wisconsin, and the state Supreme Court’s conservative majority sided with them in 2022, banning drop boxes except ones inside clerks’ offices. In Milwaukee, most drop boxes are in front of libraries, and in Madison, the state capital and a Democratic stronghold, officials decided to locate almost all of their drop boxes in front of fire stations.

A young-voter advocacy group backing Vice President Kamala Harris is launching a campaign on TikTok meant to target young voters — but not necessarily those backing former President Donald Trump. The Voters for Tomorrow campaign underscores just how tight the race is between Harris and Trump. “It’s not about winning the White House,” Gates said of the long-shot Stein campaign. “A vote for Stein is really a vote for Trump,” says the voice-over, before playing a clip of Trump praising Stein. Those working-class White women loom as a critical, potentially even decisive, factor in Trump’s third White House bid. But while White women with a college degree have trended toward the Democrats in the presidential campaigns since then, the White women without a college degree have moved sharply in the opposite direction. She acknowledges that Trump’s alarms have resonated among working-class White women, especially older ones. Not only college-educated White women, but also the equivalent White men were much more likely than the blue-collar White women to express positive views about Harris and negative ones about Trump, Gallup found. “I think there is a lot of implicit [gender] bias with” these working-class White women, Lake said.

With the U.S. presidential election fast approaching, U.S. intelligence officials have issued a stark warning: China's latest efforts to influence the outcome is shifting away from the presidential race and toward state and local candidates. This new focus is part of a broader strategy by Beijing to build relationships with officials who could eventually advance China's interests. Local and state elections have become prime targets for Chinese interference because they receive far less scrutiny than national races, making it easier for China's influence campaigns to fly under the radar. One example of China's influence operations is its use of disinformation campaigns designed to exploit divisive issues such as immigration, racial justice, and economic inequality. Despite these efforts, controlling the full scope of foreign influence operations remains a daunting challenge.

CNN —Two critical battleground states – Georgia and North Carolina – are kicking off early in-person voting this week. In Georgia, voters can head to the ballot box beginning on Tuesday and in North Carolina, early in-person voting begins on Thursday. “I don’t want to discourage people from using drop boxes by any means, but I can see why people would think it’s easier to show up in person.”Meanwhile, the opportunities to vote early in-person have expanded: Georgia law mandates two Saturdays of early voting and allows for two Sundays of early voting if a county desires. When it comes to early voting sites, the 25 western counties most impacted by Helene had planned for 80 early voting sites. “In this day and age, everyone’s taking selfies, even people in the boomer generation like me,” Phillips from Common Cause North Carolina said.

White women are a huge voting bloc, and since 2000, the GOP presidential ticket has won a majority of them. In Galvanize Action’s June poll, when President Joe Biden was still the presumptive Democratic nominee, he and Trump were in a dead heat among white women. “What we hear from [moderate white women] is, even if I would never choose to have an abortion, this is a freedom that women that I love deserve and should be protected,” Payne said. The trend has been especially pronounced among younger white women ages 18-34. White women 35 to 54 years old remain in the GOP column, per this data, and at 55 and older, the trend line shows a toss-up between both parties.

Bridgette Bello thought she’d taken proper precautions to protect against Florida’s notorious hurricanes, having purchased flood insurance as well as a separate hurricane-specific policy, in addition to her regular homeowners coverage. That’s because flooding caused much of the property damage — and most homeowners insurance policies do not cover any flood impact. Eva Marie Uzcategui / The Washington Post - Getty ImThe insurance industry is categorizing Hurricane Helene as an almost entirely flood-driven event. The questionnaires, known as client intake forms, give rare insight into the practices of Sage and other crisis pregnancy centers and how they use ambiguous language to describe their services. These practices are typical for crisis pregnancy centers across the country, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The tactics used at crisis pregnancy centers often create delays that leave women unable to access abortions, forcing them to continue their pregnancies. Most crisis pregnancy centers in the United States are affiliated with either Heartbeat International or Care Net, another anti-abortion network. Like Idaho, North Carolina provides state funding to crisis pregnancy centers.

The Trump campaign taps Lara Trump to encourage voters to vote early and by mail Earlier this year, the RNC co-chair voiced a robocall falsely alleging massive fraud occurred in the 2020 election due to mail ballots. Last month, at a rally in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Trump disparaged early voting, and promoted it, in the same breath. … Whether you vote early, absentee, by mail or in person, we’re going to protect the vote.”The Republican parties in Arizona and Nevada also tapped Lara Trump to voice robocalls promoting early and mail voting, despite previously echoing her father-in-law’s rhetoric on early voting. “So, get out there, encourage others to vote early and remind them just how critical this election is. When we vote, we win.”Lara Trump encourages Nevada voters to vote early and by mail The Nevada Republican Party tapped Lara Trump to encourage Nevadans to vote early and by mail.

CNN —When Israeli airstrikes began raining down on southern Lebanon, Kamel Ahmad Jawad’s first instinct wasn’t to seek safety or return to the US. On October 1, Jawad, a 56-year-old American citizen, father of four and cherished figure in the Dearborn, Michigan, community, was killed by an Israeli airstrike, his family says. CNN has reached out to the Israeli military, which said they could not comment without being given the exact coordinates and time of the strike that killed Jawad. But his American citizenship, his daughter says, does not make his life any more valuable than the lives of the thousands of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians killed by Israeli airstrikes. Before he was killed, Jawad sent his children a simple voice note: “Peace be upon you.

But the surveys also reveal a noticeable gap in support between the pro-abortion rights amendments and the Democratic presidential and Senate candidates who are campaigning on a pro-abortion rights platform. Pro-abortion rights ballot measures won in every state where they appeared on the ballot, including conservative-leaning ones, in the 2022 and 2023 elections. Similarly in Arizona, a proposed amendment to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution has clear majority support. In Montana, there’s little evidence that the presence of an abortion rights amendment has had a major effect on the race between three-term Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy. For example, in Missouri, public polling indicates broad support for a constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights, while Republican Sen. Josh Hawley and Trump hold strong leads in their races.

CNN —Drought is now so bad in parts of southern Africa that governments say they must kill hundreds of their most captivating, majestic wild animals to feed desperately hungry people. In August, Namibia announced it had embarked on a cull of 723 animals, including 83 elephants, 30 hippos and 300 zebras. Crops have failed, livestock has died and nearly 70 million people are desperately in need of food. They say it’s the opposite: reducing numbers will help protect remaining animals as the drought shrinks food and water resources. Both Namibia and Zimbabwe say professional hunters will ensure entire groups are killed to prevent this.

Archaeologists led by Dr. Pearce Paul Creasman, executive director of the American Center of Research, unearthed the ancient tomb. Exploring Petra, a world wonderWithin the tomb beneath the Treasury, archaeologists found a ceramic vessel resembling the Holy Grail. Only a handful of tombs uncovered in Petra in the past several decades have been found with untouched burials, Creasman said. As the researchers continue to study the skeletons, Creasman said they are hopeful more details will come to light about who the people were in life. Researchers would like to date the skeletons and artifacts as well as use extracted DNA to determine whether the dozen skeletons are related.

Inside data brokers' massive vaultCybersecurity experts estimate that data brokers collect an average of 1,000 data points on each individual with an online presence. Little oversight around data privacyThe lack of comprehensive regulation around data privacy allows data brokers to operate with little oversight, unlike the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union. Opt-out links and instructions are readily available for most of the major data brokers: ExperianTransUnionLexisNexisEpsilon But data privacy experts says reclaiming or deleting your data from brokers can be a deliberately complex process that is not only time-consuming but frustrating. "With AI, data brokers will create even more detailed and predictive profiles, incorporating everything from biometric data to behavioral tracking," Abed said. Until regulation steps in, data brokers will continue to collect as much data as possible.

High insurance costs could wipe out earnings for Cybercab owners. AdvertisementThere are plenty of hurdles for Tesla's promised robotaxi fleet to clear before launching, but one overlooked barrier may be the complexity of insuring a fleet of self-driving Teslas. Advertisement"It's great that you have a vehicle that is cheaper," said Jessica Caldwell, executive director of insights for Edmunds, referring to Tesla's $30,000 Cybercab. "But that can easily get outweighed by high insurance costs." The automotive insurance industry has yet to fully embrace autonomous technology, and without coverage, driverless Teslas can't operate.

Social Security recipients can expect a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase in their payments starting in 2025 amid cooling inflation. On Thursday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the 12-month consumer price index inflation rate hit 2.4% in September. The Social Security Administration calculates the annual COLA based on consumer price growth in the months of July, August and September. That, advocates say, is proof that seniors and other Social Security recipients are facing a declining standard of living. “Congress knows this problem is going on, but the gridlock can’t seem to solve anything, much less the third rail of politics that is Social Security,” said Shannon G. Benton, executive director of the Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group.
