Families are "squeezing to make ends meet," caught between rising prices and a lack of accessible child care, Kim Bracey, chief executive of the YWCA York, told Powell. Julie Keene, owner of Flinchbaugh’s Orchard, zeroed in on inflation, and pressed Powell on the uncertain environment businesses have having to navigate. In conversations with shopkeepers, Powell and Harker focused on aspects of the businesses and the owners' backgrounds - not inflation or the impact of interest rates. Speaking with Reuters ahead of their arrival at her shop she said high interest rates were pressing her hard. "I mean, lower the interest rates," she said.

The bill, which passed with broad Democratic and Republican support, sparked one lawmaker to pledge to oust the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy. Biden said Republicans had pledged to provide that aid through a separate vote. A White House official said Biden was referring to Republican promises of passing a separate bill on the issue. Biden urged Republicans to move ahead quickly to avoid another crisis in November. The loss of workforce and closing of plants were due to the UAW’s contract agreements and restrictive work rules, agreed to by the company under duress. These helped make Detroit uncompetitive.

Biden's remarks in Phoenix, Arizona, will also honor the legacy of the late Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee who died in 2018. Biden will warn "there is something dangerous happening in America," according to prepared remarks of his speech. Biden will say he doesn't think all Republicans ascribe to the 'MAGA' agenda, a reference to Trump's Make America Great Again slogan. He has stepped up his warnings about the potential threat to democracy posed by Trump as exemplified by the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The White House official said Biden's remarks in Tempe, Arizona, near Phoenix, will be the fourth in a series of speeches about the threat to democracy.

Tipton, an appointee of Republican former President Donald Trump, blocked the Biden administration from enforcing the $15 minimum wage in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, states that last year filed a lawsuit challenging the executive order. The minimum wage under federal law is $7.25 an hour, though many states set higher minimums. Four states and several cities have a minimum wage of at least $15. Only Congress can set minimum wages and adopt other employment policies unless it specifically grants those powers to federal agencies, Tipton wrote. In January, a federal judge in Arizona dismissed a similar challenge to Biden's executive order by five other Republican-led states.

Democrat Biden traveled to a Belleville, Michigan, parts distribution center owned by General Motors (GM.N), and joined dozens of picketers outside. Calling Biden's visit a "historic moment in time," Fain accused CEOs of taking the profits and leaving workers to "fight for scraps." Biden's Michigan visit represents the most support a sitting president has shown striking workers since Theodore Roosevelt invited striking coal workers to the White House in 1902, historians said.

The announcement put the spotlight on the kingdom's nascent nuclear energy efforts — Saudi Arabia has a small nuclear reactor, a research unit set up with the help of Argentina, that it has not yet put into operation. The Saudi energy minister did not comment on whether his country would also join the IAEA's Additional Protocol, which requires more thorough oversight including snap inspections. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a recent wide-ranging interview with Fox News that if Iran developed nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia would too. U.S. assistance with a nuclear energy program is one of Saudi Arabia's key demands — but not everyone is happy about that. The multilateral Obama-era deal had allowed the lifting of economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs to its nuclear program.

The U.S. Supreme Court is seen in Washington, U.S., June 29, 2023. That map was devised after the Supreme Court in June blocked a previous version, also for weakening the voting power of Black Alabamians. Voting rights litigation that could result in new maps of congressional districts is playing out in several states. The Alabama map concentrated large numbers of Black voters into one district and spread others into districts in numbers too small to make up a majority. Conservative litigants had succeeded in persuading the Supreme Court to limit the Voting Rights Act's scope in some important previous rulings.

That means the unemployment insurance weekly claims data will also not be published during any shutdown this time. “Most services provided by the Census Bureau would cease, including production of Economic Census data, production of economic indicators, and work on the American Community Survey,” the official said. That means delays in the release of key data, including the retail sales, housing starts and new home sales reports for September. Depending on the duration of the shutdown, the release of the first estimate of third-quarter GDP due in late October could also be delayed. As a self-funding agency, the Fed would continue to release data, policy statements and other reports.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy sought to avoid that scenario when he hammered out a spending agreement with Democratic President Joe Biden this spring. Congress typically misses that deadline and passes stopgap spending bills to avoid disruption while they finish their work. Those bills are certain to get rejected by the Senate, and the White House has said Biden would veto two of them. McCarthy has said he hopes the effort would buy goodwill and allow him to pass a stopgap that would avoid a shutdown. The Senate, meanwhile, is scheduled to advance a stopgap spending measure on Tuesday.

It was unclear whether enough Republicans will vote on the House floor for the rules, which must be established before the House can proceed to the funding bills themselves. Infighting between far right and moderate House Republicans has so far stymied attempts to advance most legislation that would keep the government running when the new fiscal year starts on Oct. 1. A short-term spending bill, known as a continuing resolution, will almost certainly be needed to avert many federal agencies from suspending operations when existing monies expire in a week. Instead, House Republicans have prepared the four separate, full-year spending bills that are certain to be rejected by the Democratic-controlled Senate. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has said the House may begin advancing the four bills on Tuesday as he seeks leverage in negotiations with the Senate.

Instead, they are preparing four separate spending bills, most of which reflect the deep cuts sought by the party's right flank. The House could vote on those bills on Tuesday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy said. Passage of the spending bills could give Republicans some leverage in negotiations with the Senate. On Thursday, the House blocked a procedural vote on an $886 billion defense spending bill, as five Republicans joined Democrats to capsize it. If it passes, McCarthy would have to decide whether he would bring it up for a vote in the House, knowing it could enrage his far-right Republicans.

The challenges are part of a growing campaign against diversity initiatives after a U.S. Supreme Court landmark ruling in June outlawed use of race in college admissions, commonly known as affirmative action. A departmental spokesperson said the office for civil rights does not discuss details of its cases. But you can't do it through racial discrimination, and the Supreme Court has been very clear about that." On Tuesday, the organization that won the Supreme Court case, Students for Fair Admissions, filed a new lawsuit challenging affirmative action admission practices at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
