PARIS, Oct 21 (Reuters) - France should unite in solidarity with the parents of a 12-year-old girl whose battered body was found last week in a suitcase outside her Paris home, President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday, calling her murder an act of "extreme evil". In his first public comments on the death of the girl, named Lola, Macron said the unspeakable atrocity that the crime represented was what has shocked the country most. "When we are faced with extreme evil and we realize that this is possible in our society," he told reporters at a European Union summit. The main suspect, a 24-year-old woman, was arrested on Monday and put under formal investigation on accusations of murder, rape and acts of torture. A couple walk with Hermes shopping bags as they leave an Hermes store in Paris March 21, 2013. Hermes (HRMS.PA) and Pernod Ricard (PERP.PA) both said they will continue to raise prices, after beating expectations in the July-September quarter. Mainland China also saw a strong rebound after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, although some restrictions have since been reimposed. PRICE RISESThe world's biggest luxury group LVMH (LVMH.PA) last week kicked off the earnings season with forecast-beating sales -- and no signs of a let-up in demand. The results from Pernod and Hermes bode well for beauty giant L'Oreal (OREP.PA) and Gucci-owner Kering (PRTP.PA), which both report results later on Thursday.
REUTERS/Denis Balibouse/File PhotoPARIS, Oct 20 (Reuters) - French spirits maker Pernod Ricard (PERP.PA) said on Thursday it was confident sales growth would remain dynamic through its 2023 fiscal year after it delivered a forecast-beating 11% sales growth in the first quarter helped by price increases in the United States, its top market. Pernod, the world's second-biggest spirits group behind Diageo (DGE.L), said the strong start to the year also reflected strong demand in China and in India and a continued rebound in global travel retail. "I am hugely encouraged by our start to the year," Chairman and CEO Alexandre Ricard said in a statement. In China alone, sales rose 9% in the first quarter thanks strong mid-Autumn festival sales. The Martell cognac brand recorded double-digit sales growth during the quarter in China despite COVID restrictions.

CGT trade union flag flutters as tyres set on fire by demonstrators burn in front of the ExxonMobil oil refinery, in Port-Jerome-sur-Seine, France, October 12, 2022. The government said it was requisitioning some staff at the Gravenchon-Port Jerome depot run by Exxon's (XOM.N) Esso France business, where the hardline CGT union remains on strike despite an agreement between management and other unions over pay. Refinery and fuel depot stoppages in France are among the longest since the cost-of-living crisis sparked labour unrest across Europe. "In view of a strike by part of the Port-Jerome staff, in Normandy, the government launches the requisition of staff necessary to operate the depot. The strike at TotalEnergies' French refineries resumed across all sites on Wednesday, the CGT said.
Management at Exxon Mobil's (XOM.N) Esso France reached a deal with a majority of unions on Monday, but not the CGT. "I have therefore asked the prefects, as permitted by law, to requisition the personnel needed to the functioning of the company's depots," she said, referring to Esso France. Esso France said it had reached a salary deal with unions on Monday. Even so, the CGT said it had not signed off on the deal, and its workers remained on strike.
REUTERS/Eric GaillardPARIS, Oct 10 (Reuters) - France's CGT trade union denounced TotalEnergies' (TTEF.PA) conditional offer for early wage talks as "blackmail", saying strikes that have left a third of the country's fuel stations running short would continue until at least Tuesday. President Emmanuel Macron, whose government is under mounting pressure to act as the strike grinds on and more fuel stations run out of some products, called for a quick end to the crisis. A CGT union representative later said the strike at the refineries would be extended until Tuesday. Long tailbacks formed at fuel stations in the Paris region as drivers tried to fill up before more pumps run dry. "This only encourages the striking workers, who are more united than ever," a CGT official at TotalEnergies' Feyzin refinery said of the company's conditional offer.
Companies Nord Stream AG FollowPARIS, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said on Thursday it was "very obvious" who was behind the suspected sabotage against the Nord Stream pipelines which caused major leaks into the Baltic Sea. "It is not yet known who made it, who is behind this sabotage, there is still discussion more or less but (...) it is very obvious (...) who was behind this issue," he told a conference on renewable energies in Paris. The Nord Stream pipelines have been flashpoints in an escalating energy war between capitals in Europe and Moscow that has damaged major Western economies and sent gas prices soaring. French President Emmanuel Macron speaks after visiting the Eric Tabarly high school in Les Sables-d'Olonne, France September 13, 2022. "Wages must be increased as there is a purchasing power problem in the country", Philippe Martinez, whose CGT union is spearheading Thursday's protests, told BFM television. Striking CGT workers this week forced the shutdown of TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) Gonfreville refinery and disrupted deliveries at others. Nuclear power industry workers are expected to join Thursday's industrial action, removing some capacity from the French power grid when France already faces a record number of nuclear reactor outages. In French primary schools, the SNUipp-FSU union expects one in every 10 primary schools to close in Paris.
