“Russia’s thinly veiled threats to use nuclear weapons remind the world that escalation of the conflict – by accident, intention, or miscalculation – is a terrible risk. "It is kind of interesting to imagine all these great big dinosaurs marching around" alongside the shrew-like animal, Eberle told Insider. The S. mikros' teeth were significantly different from its near relatives to seem like a new species. Though tiny, the S. mikros teeth are detailed enough to designate the animal as a new species.

Climate Change Hitting Fight Against AIDS, TB and Malaria

By Jennifer RigbyLONDON (Reuters) - Climate change and conflict are hitting efforts to tackle three of the world's deadliest infectious diseases, the head of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has warned. International initiatives to fight the diseases have largely recovered after being badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Fund’s 2023 results report released on Monday. But the increasing challenges of climate change and conflict mean the world is likely to miss the target of putting an end to AIDS, TB and malaria by 2030 without “extraordinary steps”, said Peter Sands, executive director of the Global Fund. The Fund also helped put 24.5 million people on antiretroviral therapy for HIV, and distributed 220 million mosquito nets. For example, malaria is spreading to highland parts of Africa that were previously too cold for the mosquito carrying the disease-causing parasite.

Dan’s research and teaching focus is on using AI for legal services and the regulation of AI in society. For instance, we can develop AI tools to help individuals understand their responsibilities and rights, and preserve and enforce those rights. People in businesses, large and small, are already using chatbots, AI assistants and other AI tools to help them comply with laws, regulations and internal policies. Additionally, new roles are emerging in the legal industry, such as legal engineers who build systems, legal data scientists and legal operations professionals. AI tools will then quickly re-optimize decisions associated with inventory shipments, staffing and promotions.

But now, two studies released Tuesday suggest that a recently developed eye-tracking tool could help clinicians diagnose children as young as 16 months with autism – and with more certainty. She was not involved in the new studies, but her research focuses on early diagnosis of autism. The children were enrolled in the study between April 2018 and May 2019, and the eye-tracking tool was included in the assessments. Among the children, 335 had an autism diagnosis that their clinicians were “certain” of without using the eye-tracking tool. “There remains work to be done before an eye-tracking test is used in clinical practice.

If you call someone a narcissist, it's likely that you've picked up on some of their less desirable traits: lack of empathy, little self-awareness, high levels of arrogance. Like many personality disorders, narcissism is a spectrum, says Jessica MacNair, a therapist who has worked with clients who have narcissistic personality disorder, or NPD. And a small dose of some traits that are linked to people who have NPD might actually be good for you. "Some of these traits can be helpful with self-esteem," MacNair says. To be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder you need to demonstrate at least five of these nine patterns described by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth edition, known as the DSM-5:Has a grandiose sense of self-importanceIs preoccupied with fantasies of success, power, brilliance, beauty, or perfect loveBelieves that they are "special" and can only be understood by or should only associate with other special peopleRequires excessive admirationHas a sense of entitlement, such as an unreasonable expectation of favorable treatment or compliance with his or her expectationsIs exploitative and takes advantage of others to achieve their own endsLacks empathy and is unwilling to identify with the needs of othersIs often envious of others or believes that others are envious of themShows arrogant, haughty behaviors and attitudesA person who doesn't exhibit five of these tendencies can still have narcissistic personality traits.

Study finds that ChatGPT provided false information when asked to design cancer treatment plans. The chatbot mixed correct and incorrect information together, making it harder to decipher. Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital – a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts – found that cancer treatment plans generated by OpenAI's revolutionary chatbot were full of errors. AdvertisementAdvertisementDespite ChatGPT's success, generative AI models are still prone to "hallucinations," where they confidently present information that is misleading or wildly incorrect. The company's terms of usage warn that their models are not designed to provide medical information, and should not be used to "provide diagnostic or treatment services for serious medical conditions."

After discussions with Massachusetts, NHTSA said the state had clarified that automakers could comply with the law using a "short-range wireless compliance approach, implemented appropriately." The Massachusetts attorney general's office said it appreciated "NHTSA’s clarification today that our state law is not preempted by federal law." Automakers now must comply with the state law, the office said. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group representing major automakers including General Motors (GM.N), Toyota Motor (7203.T) and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) declined to comment but previously argued the state law would require automakers "to remove essential cybersecurity protections from their vehicles." Scientists are keeping an eye on the new lineage, named BA.2.86, because it has 36 mutations that distinguish it from the currently-dominant XBB.1.5 variant. So far there is no evidence that BA.2.86 spreads faster or causes more serious illness than previous versions. COVID infections and hospitalizations have been rising in the U.S., Europe and Asia, with more cases in recent months attributed to the EG.5 "Eris" subvariant, a descendant of the Omicron lineage that originally emerged in November 2021. But many countries have drastically reduced testing of patients and their efforts to analyze the genomes of the viruses causing new COVID cases. Updated COVID booster shots now being developed have been designed to target the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5.

US CDC tracks new lineage of virus that causes COVID

The lineage is named BA.2.86, and has been detected in the United States, Denmark and Israel, the CDC said in a post on messaging platform X. "As we learn more about BA.2.86, CDC's advice on protecting yourself from COVID-19 remains the same," the agency said. The WHO said that, so far, only a few sequences of the variant have been reported from a handful of countries. The new lineage, which has 36 mutations from the currently-dominant XXB.1.5 COVID variant "harkens back to an earlier branch" of the virus, explained Dr. S. Wesley Long, medical director of diagnostic microbiology at Houston Methodist. https://slides.com/jbloom/new_2nd_gen_ba2_variant?ftag=YHF4eb9d17#/12The Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 is the strain targeted by vaccines in upcoming COVID booster shots.

The variant was identified in China in February 2023 and was first detected in the United States in April. It is a descendant of the Omicron variant XBB.1.9.2 and has one notable mutation that helps it to evade antibodies developed by the immune system in response to earlier variants and vaccines. That advantage may be why EG.5 has become the dominant strain worldwide, and it could be one reason Covid cases have started to rise again. Diagnostic tests and treatments such as Paxlovid continue to be effective against it, Dr. Pekosz said. “My main concern is for the people at high risk,” Dr. Topol said.

Zoom wants to train its artificial intelligence models using some of your data, according to recently updated terms of service. The update, effective as of July 27, establishes Zoom's right to utilize some aspects of customer data for training and tuning its AI, or machine learning models. Customer content such as messages, files and documents do not seem to be included in this category. But when a user does enable these features, Zoom has them sign a consent form allowing Zoom to train its AI models using their individual customer content. A Zoom spokesperson said in a statement that "Zoom customers decide whether to enable generative AI features, and separately whether to share customer content with Zoom for product improvement purposes."

There is thus an inherent tension at the heart of personalized medicine. It purports to both tailor health care and drive down costs, but the more it succeeds at individualization, the higher go the prices. My parents were financially stable, and they had good health insurance that covered the expensive drug. Media reports surrounding personalized medicine often forecast a future of health care revolutionized by the arrival of medical magic bullets and biomedical breakthroughs. Still, for patients with advanced lung cancer like my dad, the chances of being alive five years after initial diagnosis are terrifyingly small.

To an ordinary person, the answer is obviously yes. Lacks, a Black mother of five, was dying of cervical cancer in 1951 when doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore biopsied tissues from her cervix. Whatever the case, cells from the research sample were later found to be highly valuable because they were the first that could divide indefinitely in a laboratory. And cells are “de-identified,” unlike Lacks’s cells, which are named HeLa to this day. What’s still debated is whether people have a legitimate ownership claim in the first place.
