— Delaware state Sen. Sarah McBride won the state’s only House seat Tuesday, NBC News projects, making her the first openly transgender person elected to Congress. McBride, a Democrat, defeated Republican John Whalen III, taking 57.8% of the vote with 95% of the vote in. She thanked her friends and family and her late husband, Andy Cray, who died of cancer in 2014, just days after their wedding. He said he persuaded six Republicans to vote for McBride. The amendment won majority support from Florida voters, but it needed to cross the 60% threshold to pass under state law. Its defeat is a setback for reproductive rights groups in the red-leaning state and a victory for Republican Gov. Even though the ballot measure failed, the NBC News Exit poll found that 65% of Florida voters said abortion should be legal in all or most cases. There will be a lot of accounting of why Harris came so close but did not close the deal. I know the fundamentals of how and why Trump exists — I’ve written about them too many times to count — and I know that nothing about those fundamentals has changed. This election was about who told a better story about the fundamentals without promising anything to fix those fundamentals. I know that most Americans are center-right and that the left has not yet built the power base necessary to make most Americans center-left. She was always going to be the only legitimate candidate in a race against Donald Trump, a felon and self-aggrandizing political troll.
