Haddad, a former mayor of Sao Paulo, took office vowing to restore public accounts and with the challenge of presenting a credible fiscal framework after Congress passed a giant Lula social spending package. Markets reacted badly to Haddad's first days in office, especially after Lula ordered a budget-busting extension to a fuel tax exemption which Haddad had publicly opposed. "Haddad learned on his first day in office that he will be a decorative figure, a sort of task worker for President Lula," the conservative daily said in an editorial. On Tuesday, markets were further rattled by remarks by Lula's social security and labour ministers. That was compounded when he said Lula's government would need to review the investor-friendly pension reform approved by Bolsonaro's administration.
"I'm a health and wellness reporter," I responded "So, you're a vegetarian, aren't you?" Just how many life changes have I made as a result of my health reporting? But I learned from Dr. Kelman that if you're not letting your toothbrush air-dry, you're actually increasing the likelihood of bacteria building up. I read on and learned that the warning was for the holiday lights that were built in to the tree. While researching, I discovered that most holiday lights have lead and phthalates on their wiring, which can be very harmful for young children and pregnant women.
Festive season in Moscow incorporates symbols of conflict

MOSCOW, Dec 26 (Reuters) - Outside the gates of Moscow's Gorky Park, the three Latin letters Z, V and O - frontline military symbols now used to promote the conflict in Ukraine - loom on plinths. Nearby, traditional festive decorations and a giant decorative bauble jostle for attention as parents and children walk into the park to ice skate or visit cafes. The "special military operation", which the Kremlin paints as an existential conflict with the West, has come to predominate over typical holiday decorations in the Russian capital. Inside the park, there's a pavilion that contains a studio where people can record New Year and Christmas video messages for troops. On Red Square, a pavilion was set up for people to donate gifts and humanitarian aid to troops.
The Vatican will return three Parthenon fragments to the Greek Orthodox Church as a "donation." The Vatican Museum has kept the fragments since 1803, when Greece says they were stolen. For years, Greece has sought to regain Parthenon marbles from The Vatican and British Museums. Elgin sold the relics to the Vatican Museum in 1803 and additional fragments to the British Museum in 1816. The British Museum did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

VATICAN CITY, Dec 16 (Reuters) - Pope Francis has decided to return to Greece three 2,500-year-old pieces of the Parthenon that have been in the papal collections of the Vatican Museums for more than a century. The pieces are being returned to Greece as London and Athens continue an artistic tug of war over the so-called Elgin Marbles. Greece has repeatedly called for the permanent return from the British Museum of the 2,500-year-old sculptures, which British diplomat Lord Elgin removed from the Parthenon temple in the early 19th century when he was ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Greece's then-ruler. Earlier this month a Greek newspaper reported that a deal to return the marbles to Greece was close, but the Greek government said it was not imminent. In March, the United Nations' cultural agency UNESCO urged Greece and Britain to reach a settlement.
What Made You Look in 2022?

Most mornings on the Styles desk, a small group of editors meets to look through dozens of photos that have been filed for upcoming stories. Whether looking at distinctive going-out clothing or cover portraits, we revel in the individuality of each person in the frame. Sometimes, it’s not so much the singularity of the image that gets our attention but rather the universality. Up the center of the image they stack, head over head, like the stills from an Eadweard Muybridge film sequence, collapsed and viewed from the front. Some hold clamshells of their takeout lunch; a few look directly at the camera, not entirely without suspicion; a sixth man has escaped the frame and blurs off to the left.
‘Young Bloomsbury’ Review: A Bohemia of Their Own

It’s impossible to appreciate the context of Nino Strachey’s book “Young Bloomsbury” without a clear understanding of what Old Bloomsbury was. Unfortunately, that presents its own difficulties, since no one, not even the Bloomsbury Group’s original members, has ever agreed on how to define it. The achievements of the group took place in a variety of fields: literature (Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster), art history (Roger Fry and Clive Bell), biography (Lytton Strachey), painting and decorative arts (Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant), international politics (Leonard Woolf) and economics (John Maynard Keynes). Among them, Virginia Woolf, Keynes and Fry were the farthest-reaching innovators. But if the others did not reach the same heights, their work nonetheless remains significant.
It turns out it was a hidden door that led to a closet, and inside was a brownish sarcophagus mummy head on a display table. I don’t know if it was a real mummy or not, but it sure looked real. I then showed the apartment to a buyer, and she hit the door and the mummy head appeared. I told my seller she really loved the apartment and wanted to put an offer in, but that she wanted the head. The condo was listed at $2.5 million, and we ended up selling it very close to ask, with the head.
Jell-O GirlEarly Jell-O advertising depicted women as inept, needing the help of a simple recipe like Jell-O. Jell-O released flavors such as seasoned tomato, celery, mixed vegetable and Italian salad, and Jell-O salads were a colorful way to use leftovers in side dishes. In 1955, the company introduced the slogan “A Jell-O salad makes the meal.”“The Jell-O salad really hits the American sensibility and palate perfectly. Dutch paints and coatings maker Akzo Nobel has suspended its 2023 core profit outlook, citing macroeconomic turbulence which is negatively affecting consumer confidence. The Amsterdam-based group, which makes the Dulux and Flexa paints and supplies to sectors ranging from aerospace to yachts, said several markets are expected to experience disruptions. Akzo Nobel, which had previously forecast to reach earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of 2 billion euros ($1.96 billion) in 2023, said it would provide further guidance when it announces full-year results. The company posted a third-quarter adjusted operating income excluding the retrospective impact of hyperinflation accounting at 201 million euros, within the 195-215 million euros range it had guided for in September. Analysts in a Vara Research poll had on average estimated it to come in at 195.8 million euros.

Yet there are ways to creatively use your budget, said Athena Calderone, author of the design book "Live Beautiful." "While it can feel really stressful to decorate on a small budget, the good news is that constraints are far from confining," Calderone told me. If the goal is longevity, Owens also recommends buying your core furniture pieces in durable materials and neutral colors. You can also search for original art in your price range on websites such as Art Finder.

The i7 is the electric version of a new generation of the BMW 7 Series flagship unveiled on Wednesday. While those other luxury brands’ electric vehicles are based on dedicated EV chassis with little relationship to their gas-powered models, BMW emphasizes adaptable engineering as its edge. Both of those iconic British brands are owned by BMW, and plan to sell only electric vehicles by 2030.

But in his latest book, “Stone Age: Ancient Castles of Europe,” writer and photographer Frédéric Chaubin set out to disrupt the familiar stereotypes, using prose and photography to link the medieval with the Modernist. Frédéric Chaubin/Courtesy of TASCHENWhen castles first emerged in the 10th century as an alternative to wooden structures, they were envisaged as fortified dwellings for the ruling class. Frédéric Chaubin/Courtesy of TASCHENWhen making his final selection, Chaubin prioritized the impressiveness of a castle’s location and its architectural simplicity – in keeping with his overarching theme – rather than its historical significance. Dividing the castles by location seemed equally futile, given that Europe’s borders were in constant flux during the centuries covered in the book. “The very large typology of those castles made the subject more difficult to deal with, but at the same time, more interesting.”“Stone Age: Ancient Castles of Europe,” published by Taschen, is available now.
