TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas police chief who led an August raid on a small weekly newspaper seemed to have the support of most city leaders in the weeks since the search, despite public outcry and calls for his resignation. Publisher Eric Meyer told Cody via email that the paper got the document from a source it did not name. Newell said that on Aug. 7, Cody contacted her and told her he believed she had been the victim of a crime. On Aug. 8, Cody emailed the KBI's office in Wichita, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) to the southwest. That evening, Leeds sent Marion Police Officer Zach Hudlin an email about a search warrant for Meyer's home.

The police chief who led a highly criticized raid of a small Kansas newspaper has been suspended, the mayor confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday. Marion Mayor Dave Mayfield in a text said he suspended Chief Gideon Cody on Thursday. Legal experts believe the raid on the newspaper violated a federal privacy law or a state law shielding journalists from having to identify sources or turn over unpublished material to law enforcement. Video of the raid on the home of publisher Eric Meyer shows how distraught his 98-year-old mother became as officers searched through their belongings. Another reporter last month filed a federal lawsuit against the police chief over the raid.

Dave McCormick struck an old "Issues" page from his website, including a section on abortion. He's mounting a second Senate bid in Pennsylvania as the GOP mulls a shift in abortion messaging. "Dave is staunchly pro-life and believes that life begins at conception," read the old "Issues" pages, according to the Internet Archive. "I do accept three exceptions... rape, incest, and the life of the mother," McCormick told attendees, according to the audio. A broader shift in abortion messagingMcCormick is launching his second campaign as party leaders and strategists mull a shift in messaging on abortion.

[1/3] Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a 2024 presidential campaign rally in Dubuque, Iowa, U.S. September 20, 2023. Democrats are hoping to exploit what they see as a structural weakness for Republicans in battleground states in 2024: any Republican candidate who criticizes Trump risks losing the party's Trump-loving voter base. But they believe any Republican who doesn't condemn Trump risks losing more moderate Republicans and independent voters they need to beat a Democrat. Republican party officials say Democrats' time would be better spent worrying about their own presidential candidate Joe Biden's popularity. "The amount of damage Trump has done to the Republican Party in the suburbs is extraordinary.

"Obviously, he's a candidate who has completely united the grassroots," a national Republican strategist, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to discuss the candidacy, said. In a background call with reporters, a McCormick campaign strategist said the candidate "will address" those concerns "head on and directly." And the McCormick campaign strategist said the candidate will enter the race with the support of each Republican member of Pennsylvania's congressional delegation. "Dave McCormick has done a remarkable job of unifying the grassroots in Pennsylvania," Montana Sen. Steve Daines, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said in a statement. "His ability to unite both the grassroots and the establishment is extremely impressive," the national Republican strategist said.

In a recent video, he highlighted three cities where prices are still a decent way off their highs despite favorable fundamentals like wage growth and population growth. When it comes to population growth, Austin grew by 2.7% between 2021 and 2022, according to Census Bureau data. The list incorporates cities seeing economic and population growth. Both wage and population growth are theoretically supportive of home prices as they support demand. "This means all three markets SHOULD be primed for home prices to increase, BUT sellers are still dropping prices.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Republicans trying to recapture the U.S. Senate majority have the candidate they want in Pennsylvania. Almost since the moment he lost last year's Senate GOP primary, McCormick has floated the possibility that he would again seek the party's nomination for the U.S. Senate, this time to challenge three-term Democratic Sen. Bob Casey. “At this point, if Dave McCormick doesn't run, it'll be the biggest head fake in Pennsylvania political history,” said Vince Galko, a Republican campaign strategist based in northeastern Pennsylvania. For a party that has struggled — both nationally and in Pennsylvania — with nominating polarizing and badly flawed candidates for Senate, some in Pennsylvania worry that another fringe candidate could capture the nomination and embarrass the party anew if McCormick doesn’t run. If McCormick doesn't run, some party officials worry about the caliber of available alternatives at this relatively late stage.
