CNN —The 2024 GOP presidential debate stage is shrinking after the Republican National Committee announced late Monday that seven candidates are set to participate in the second debate – down one from their first clash. Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Gov. Former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 GOP nomination, is skipping the event. Republican candidates are gearing up for the second GOP presidential debate, as they look to chip away at former President Donald Trump’s comfortable lead with less than four months before the first nominating contest. After a raucous first debate in Milwaukie last month, the candidates are set to return to the debate stage for a two-hour event at 9 p.m. To qualify for the second debate, a candidate must poll at least 3% in two national polls or 3% in one national poll and one poll from an early state poll in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada or South Carolina, according to rules set by the Republican National Committee. In addition to the polling and fundraising requirements, the candidates must also have taken a loyalty pledge in order to participate in the debate, which all eight candidates who participated in the first debate completed. With that pledge, which has been somewhat controversial among the candidates, GOP presidential hopefuls must sign a statement that they will support the eventual Republican nominee.

Burgum has been on the outside looking into the second debate with less than a week to go to secure enough support in primary polls to qualify. Best of America PAC has booked and spent $950,000 since Thursday, the day after the GOP debate, according to the ad-tracking firm AdImpact. Republicans have begun to coalesce around the idea of a federal abortion ban after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Trump had his mug shot taken as he was booked at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta. The sheriff office’s record listed the former president as “White Male 6’ 3” 215 lbs” with “Blond or Strawberry” hair and “blue” eyes. He attacked investigators through his public rhetoric, refused to follow traditional decorum and seemed to say whatever he wanted to. As a result, when many Americans see a mug shot like this, the photograph barely causes a stir.

Participants in the party’s first debate for the 2024 election on Wednesday night promised to shrink the government’s budget shortfall. Yet Republicans have a bad track record for cutting federal debt, and some candidates are already touting pricey projects and tax cuts. The last Republican president to run a budget surplus was George W. Bush in 2001, but even that year was partly influenced by the cost-cutting measures put in place by his Democratic predecessor. With Congress balking at such a combinations, Republican candidates’ plans are all talk, little hope of action. That budget deficit is 122% larger than the shortfall seen in the same period last year.
