ATLANTA (AP) — The state of Georgia will start paying for gender-affirming health care for state employees, public school teachers and former employees covered by a state health insurance plan, settling another in a string of lawsuits against Georgia agencies aiming to force them to pay for gender-confirmation surgery and other procedures. The December lawsuit argued the insurance plan illegally discriminated by refusing to pay for gender-affirming care. But Brown said Thursday's settlement requires the health plan to pay for care deemed medically necessary for spouses and dependents as well as employees. That means the health plan could be required to pay for care for minors outside the state even though it's prohibited in Georgia. “The plan can’t treat the care any differently from other care that’s not available in the state,” Brown said.

WASHINGTON, Oct 10 (Reuters) - The Biden administration is expected to announce on Friday the winners of $7 billion in federal grants to build out regional hydrogen hubs, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The 2021 bipartisan infrastructure bill allocated up to $7 billion to launch the initiative, called the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs program, which will help fund six to 10 regional clean hydrogen hubs across the United States. The hubs have many private and public sector partners and the federal grants are expected to unleash a wave of new state and private sector investment. The administration has also earmarked billions of dollars more in subsidies for hydrogen producers in last year's Inflation Reduction Act. The Philadelphia region is one of the locations vying for a share of the $7 billion in grants.

Maj. Joshua Mast, after a raid on an Afghan village, tried for years to adopt a baby he found in the rubble. The high-profile legal battle pits an Afghan family against an American one, and has drawn responses from the White House and the Taliban. The AP has located no records of the birth of the farmer's baby or photographs of her with the family before the raid. Four of the farmer's children had survived, so covered with dust and dirt they were almost unrecognizable, said neighbor Rahim. Less than two years after the raid, Mast helped the Afghan couple and the toddler flee as the country collapsed and the Taliban took over.

☆ Prosecutors Identify Human Remains Found in 2011 Near Gilgo Beach

A skull that was found in 2011 near Gilgo Beach on Long Island has been identified as that of a 34-year-old woman who went missing in 1996, the authorities said on Friday. The death of the woman, Karen Vergata, has not been linked to Rex Heuermann, a Long Island architect who last month pleaded not guilty to killing three women whose bodies were found along the beach. The skull of Ms. Vergata, who investigators said had worked as an escort, was discovered on Tobay Beach around the same time that investigators discovered the remains of 11 other people along the stretch of the South Shore that includes nearby Gilgo Beach. Other remains belonging to Ms. Vergata had been found in Davis Park on Fire Island in April 1996. For years, she was known as “Fire Island Jane Doe” as the police worked to identify her.
