Gavi's winning goal for Spain against Norway in a European Championship qualifier on Sunday will likely have been cheered as wildly in Glasgow as it was in Madrid. The Barcelona midfielder's strike at Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo secured a 1-0 win that means both Spain and Scotland have qualified for Euro 2024. Scotland might not harbor realistic ambitions of winning Euro 2024, but it has arguably exceeded expectations by qualifying from Group A. Wales moved up to second in the group ahead of Croatia in third, with both teams on 10 points. Poland drew 1-1 with Moldova to leave those teams three points and four points off the top respectively.

Most foreign airlines have suspended or curtailed services, leaving passengers uncertain how to leave or reach the country and consular services struggling to keep up with demand for assistance, with priority given to those with missing relatives. Israel's parliamentary finance committee said late on Tuesday it would debate authorising state guarantees for providing war risk insurance for Israeli airlines. British Airways said it would suspend flights to Tel Aviv after diverting a flight from London back to Britain shortly before it was due to reach Tel Aviv, citing security concerns. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Washington remains in talks with U.S. airlines about flights to Israel. LIMASSOL, Cyprus, Oct 6 (Reuters) - The ECB's monetary policy transmission is working to tame inflation, though material uncertainty persists in the euro area, ECB policymaker Constantinos Herodotou said on Friday. "The recent increase in energy prices could transmit again to the rest of the economy and have an upward pressure on prices," Herodotou, who is also governor of Cyprus's central bank, told a conference in the city of Limassol. "The liquidity conditions in the euro area banking system is another area to monitor, since it plays a role for transmitting monetary policy and, consequently, affects inflation," he said. The ECB has raised its deposit rate to a record high 4% but has signalled a pause for the months ahead on tentative signs inflation is coming under control. Headline inflation in the 20 countries using the euro eased to 4.3% in September, the lowest pace since October 2021, from 5.2% a month earlier.

Italy is even going outside the EU to establish links with the United Kingdom to crack down on unwanted arrivals. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was blunt about how far Europe's leaders still are from reaching a consensus before they met in Granada, Spain. Orbán, who has pushed back against EU policy repeatedly and taken a hard-line approach against migration, said that he won't sign off on any deal at any point in the foreseeable future. He went as far as to compare the situation to being “legally raped” by Hungary's fellow EU members. “The agreement on migration, politically, it’s impossible — not today (or) generally speaking for the next years," Orbán said.

Officials Urge Moldova to Seize Opportunity for EU Membership
  + stars: | 2023-09-30 | by ( Sept. | At P.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +3 min
By Alexander TanasCHISINAU (Reuters) - Moldova launched a nationwide discussion on securing European Union membership, with senior officials and academics urging their compatriots to seize every opportunity to join the bloc or run the risk of being left behind or sinking into chaos. Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu launched the discussion on EU membership on Friday, saying that public participation "has a critical meaning in building a more prosperous future within the framework of the community of Europe". The Moscow-sympathetic opposition, thrown out of power by Sandu's landslide 2020 election victory, is sceptical about EU membership. Moldovans, their country wedged between Ukraine and EU member Romania, have proved enthusiastic. Sandu and other officials have suggested that Moldova should forge ahead with its EU membership bid and ignore separatist Transdniestria, much like Cyprus was allowed to join despite the Turkish occupation of its northern regions since the 1970s.

GENEVA (AP) — The Ukraine soccer federation said it will boycott any European youth competition that includes Russia as UEFA works on easing a blanket ban imposed since the war started. Ukraine soccer officials also urged other UEFA member countries late Tuesday to refuse to play Russia, a stance that England reiterated within hours of the European soccer body announcing a new policy of trying to reintegrate Russian Under-17 teams. Switzerland’s soccer federation also said its women’s team would not play Russia at the Euro 2022 tournament hosted by England. UEFA said “children should not be punished for actions whose responsibility lies exclusively with adults,” and its staff will look at finding groups that Russian Under-17 teams can play in. Russian youth players plus their coaches and officials would face issues getting visas and flights to travel for UEFA games.

In a statement released late on Tuesday, the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) urged UEFA to reconsider its decision and urged other countries not to play against Russian teams. UEFA decided after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 that all Russian teams - national or club sides - would be suspended from participation in its competitions. But UEFA said on Tuesday that "children should not be punished for actions whose responsibility lies exclusively with adults", and that Russian U-17 sides would be readmitted to UEFA competitions "in the course of this season". "UAF strongly condemns today's UEFA decision on the return of U-17 teams from the Russian Federation to international competitions," the UAF said, urging UEFA to stick to its blanket ban on Russian teams. England's Football Association reacted to UEFA's decision on Tuesday by saying its youth teams would not play against Russia.

GENEVA (AP) — Swiss federal prosecutors on Tuesday said they have indicted a former employee of oil trading giant Gunvor over bribes paid to obtain access to the Republic of Congo's petroleum market more than a decade ago. The attorney general's office says the indictment follows an eight-year investigation, during which the company itself was ordered to pay 94 million Swiss francs (dollars) in 2019 over the bribery allegations. The next day, the U.S. government announced sanctions against Russian interests, including Timchenko himself. Gunvor has since stopped its operations in the Republic of Congo, and said it has improved its compliance programs. UEFA set to reinstate Russian youth teams

Following the invasion, which Moscow calls a "special military operation", UEFA decided in February 2022 that all Russian teams - national or club sides - would be suspended from participation in their competitions. "The Executive Committee has asked the UEFA administration to propose a technical solution that would enable the reinstatement of the Russian U17 teams (both girls and boys) even when draws have already been held." UEFA added that Russian teams' matches would be played outside Russia and would not feature the country's flag, anthem or national kit. "... by banning children from our competitions, we not only fail to recognise and uphold a fundamental right for their holistic development but we directly discriminate against them," UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said.
