In May 2000, the group managed to drive Israel out of southern Lebanon after a grueling guerilla conflict. On the evening of July 30, an Israeli drone fired two missiles into a residential building in southern Beirut, killing senior Hezbollah commander Fu’ad Shukr. Taken together, the missile attack and the exploding devices represent a dramatic infiltration by Israel of Hezbollah’s critical command and control networks. Israel denied any important targets were struck and no evidence has been made public to contradict that denial. Israel is no longer willing to tolerate the slow-burn war on its northern border and is resorting to ever more extreme and potentially escalatory measures.

CNN —London’s famed Oxford Street could finally be pedestrianized, according to new plans announced by city mayor Sadiq Khan on Tuesday, following years of debate about how to revitalize the area. Tourism numbers have not fully recovered since the pandemic, according to the mayor’s office. “Oxford Street was once the jewel in the crown of Britain’s retail sector, but there’s no doubt that it has suffered hugely over the last decade,” said the mayor in the statement. London CNN —Former BBC news presenter Huw Edwards has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment suspended for two years by a London court for having indecent images of children, according to PA Media. Edwards, who was the BBC’s highest-paid journalist, pleaded guilty in July to having 41 indecent images of children. The adult man who sent Edwards the images is a convicted pedophile, the court heard on Monday. Edwards sent him hundreds of pounds “apparently off the back of (him) sending pornographic images,” prosecutor Ian Hope said. No more illegal images were sent after that message, the court heard, but the pair were said to continue exchanging legal pornographic images until April 2022.

LONDON — Two alleged art thieves will appear in court in London next month accused of stealing “Girl With Balloon,” a famous painting by the mysterious British street artist Banksy. Larry Fraser, 47, from east London, and James Love, 53, from Essex, were both charged with non-residential burglary and placed in police custody on Thursday. The artwork — which shows a little girl letting go of, or perhaps reaching out for, a heart-shaped balloon — was stolen from a gallery in central London on Sept. 8 at 11:00 p.m, police said. The painting was the only item stolen and police said it had been recovered and would be returned to the gallery. The latest artworks from Banksy were a series of animal paintings dotted around London last month.
