Photo Illustrating Coinbase in Suqian, Jiangsu Province, China on June 6, 2023 (Photo Illustration by Costfoto/NurPhoto via Getty Images)British regulators fined Coinbase's U.K. arm £3.5 million ($4.5 million) on Thursday over breaching a voluntary agreement designed to stop the cryptocurrency exchange from onboarding "high-risk customers." CB Payments Limited (CBPL) is part of the Coinbase Group, which operates a global crypto trading platform. In October 2020, CBPL entered into a voluntary agreement with the U.K.'s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), accepting restrictions that prevented it from taking on new customers that the regulator considered high-risk. However, CBPL breached the agreement and onboarded and served 13,416 of so-called high-risk customers, the FCA said. These funds were used to make withdrawals and execute crypto transactions via other Coinbase entities, totaling approximately $226 million.

Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin on Wednesday cautioned against voting for political candidates based solely on whether they have adopted a "pro-crypto" stance. The best example of this is, predictably, modern Russia," added Buterin, a Russia-born coder who built ethereum in his late teens. Buterin did not single out any names in his post of either political candidates, or of those opting to support them. It comes in stark contrast to the Joe Biden White House, which has been seen as hard on crypto. However, the perception that Biden is anti-crypto and Trump is pro-crypto has some Biden allies concerned enough to take their case directly to senior White House officials.

At a February event, Vance raised concerns about Alphabet and Meta Platforms , saying that the technology behemoths have hurt tech innovation and pose potential risks to democracy. Trump would completely delegate the tech policy agenda to anyone given his personal interest in that space," Gallant wrote. "But we believe Sen. Vance would be a very important voice — perhaps decisive on some matters — in view of experience in the tech sector ... and of tech policy." Cryptocurrencies Many Wall Street analysts also expect Vance to maintain a favorable stance toward digital assets under a Trump White House. These stocks should fare well given Trump's favorable view toward digital assets, Boltansky said.

Tragedy strikes and traders (or trading algorithms) sniff out a way to make money off of it. Stocks also went on a tear as Covid-19 killed millions and gutted economies across the globe. “The market’s up today, but the market’s up every day,” Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, tells me. Whether or not the political bump lasts, some traders did seize on the moment to double down on so-called Trump trades. In short, when the yield curve gets steeper, that’s a sign bond traders are nervous.

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump looks on during his campaign event, in Racine, Wisconsin, U.S. June 18, 2024. In 2020, before Biden took office, the SEC accused Ripple and its founders of violating securities laws by acting as unregistered brokers of digital currency tokens, which the SEC regulates as securities. In 2023, the SEC filed a similar complaint against Coinbase, the largest U.S. crypto exchange platform. Trump has seized on this frustration in recent months, recasting himself from a crypto skeptic into a crypto supporter.
