AdvertisementThere's always that uncertainty: What if the person you're buying with doesn't like it or wants a different lifestyle? There's a certain trepidation — whether you're a woman or a man — when you're single and unsure about your future, which can make people hesitant to buy a home.

All across France, there's a glut of châteaus for sale. Plans require approval by the French minister of culture, and work must be done by designated specialists. Starbucks' airport location staff — and company technology — will be put to the test this week during some of the busiest travel days of the year. For the aviation industry, bottlenecks at airport Starbucks are just another sign of soaring demand and overcrowded airports. Licensing modelA challenge for Starbucks is that licensees — not Starbucks itself – operate its airport locations. Starbucks opened its first airport location with licensee HMSHost in 1991 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which serves Starbucks' hometown. While HMSHost still operates the overwhelming majority of Starbucks' airport cafes, more operators, such as Paradies Lagardere and OTG, have since taken a swing at it.

Only a small share of employees work fully remotely. During the pandemic, many departments allowed more staffers to telecommute — though about half of federal employees continued to work fully in person. Looking at all federal employees, nearly 80% of the hours they work are in person, the OMB report found. “I don’t think you can just eliminate a quarter or half of federal employees on an ad hoc basis without paralyzing the government,” he said. It could also prompt talented federal employees to seek jobs in the private sector.

The election victory by Donald Trump and his Republican Party was a rebuke of a Democratic Party that has positioned itself as protector of a despised status quo, rendering it unable to connect with an electorate desperate for change. Defeating Mr. Trump in the future will require liberals, progressives and others on the left to articulate a positive vision that can capture the imagination of a broad majority of Americans. But where can they find the inspiration for such a vision? The answer lies in the work of the towering 20th century political philosopher John Rawls. The philosophy of Rawls, who died in 2002, is grounded not in self-interest and competition, but in reciprocity and cooperation.

The Biden administration plans to reduce Intel’s preliminary $8.5 billion federal CHIPS grant, a move that follows the California-based company’s investment delays and broader business struggles. The government’s decision to reduce the size of the grant follows Intel’s move to delay some of its planned investments in chip facilities in Ohio. The company now plans to finish that project by the end of the decade instead of 2025. The chip maker has been under pressure to reduce costs after posting its biggest quarterly loss in the company’s 56-year history. The move by the Biden administration also takes into account Intel’s technology road map and customer demand.

Come 2025, you might find it's a tad easier to change jobs. If the job market doesn't strengthen as hoped, Zhao said some workers' frustrations over their 9-to-5 could rise. AdvertisementYet "if the job market heats up, then we'll likely see a wave of turnover as workers vote with their feet," Zhao said. Verizon has some 105,000 employees and typically fills about 20,000 jobs a year through a mix of internal and external candidates. "I don't think that it's going to be any easier to get the best of the best to work here," Schelling said.

This past week marked 58 years since the opening night for the Broadway premiere of “Cabaret” in 1966. The composer John Kander, the lyricist Fred Ebb and the playwright Joe Masteroff wrote “Cabaret” in collaboration with the director Harold Prince as a response to the era. Night after night, I witnessed audiences grappling with the raw, unsettling reflection that “Cabaret” held up to them. I’m hearing from friends in the current Broadway production of “Cabaret” that the line is once again getting an audible response, but of a different sort. Today, it seems the line is playing exactly as the Nazi-sympathizing Emcee would have intended.

The agreement was criticized by developing nations, who called it insufficient, but United Nations climate chief Simon Steill hailed it as an insurance policy for humanity. It also laid bare divisions between wealthy governments constrained by tight domestic budgets and developing nations reeling from costs of storms, floods and droughts. Delegates applaud during a closing plenary meeting at the COP29 United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Baku, Azerbaijan on Nov. 24, 2024. Donald Trump’s victory this month has raised doubts among some negotiators that the world’s largest economy would pay into any climate finance goal agreed in Baku. The showdown over financing for developing countries comes in a year that scientists say is destined to be the hottest on record.

Israel’s new defense minister has said security forces would no longer apply administrative detention orders to Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank, and thus only Palestinian suspects can be held indefinitely without trial. Israel Katz, a long-time ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was appointed defense minister earlier in November and announced the decision on Friday. In 2019, Trump abandoned the long-held U.S. position that West Bank settlements are illegal before it was restored by President Joe Biden. Settler immunity from administrative detention coincides with heightened rhetoric from Israeli ministers calling for the West Bank to be annexed. The U.N. said four Palestinian children have been killed every week in the West Bank on average since the current conflict began, a three-fold increase from the first nine months of 2023.
