Charter and Disney have reached a rights deal, and the media industry was duped. Slate's headline the same day honed in further: "Disney Is in a Fight That Might Change TV Forever." But there's a reason why Dolan discussed this concept a decade ago and still linear cable TV exists. Charter still makes money by offering linear cable TV. Comcast , the largest U.S. cable TV provider, owns a slew of cable networks.

ESPN and other Disney channels disappeared from Charter's Spectrum cable service on Aug. 31, as contract negotiations reached an impasse. Disney announced this spring that Monday Night Football games would be carried on both ESPN and its ABC Network. That means Spectrum cable subscribers who live in markets with a local ABC TV affiliate not owned by Disney, including Buffalo, New York, will be able to watch Monday's NFL match-up broadcast. Some 25 million cable subscribers have cut the cord, industry-wide, over the last five years, as rising prices for content translate to higher fees for subscribers, contributing to the exodus. Disney, for its part, announced a discount for its Hulu + Live TV service, which will provide access to the U.S. Open, college football and NFL games.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 7 (Reuters) - Charter Communications (CHTR.O) Chief Executive Chris Winfrey said he has a sense of urgency to resolve a distribution dispute with Walt Disney (DIS.N), in remarks on Thursday at a tech conference in San Francisco. Charter is locked in a distribution battle with Disney as the second-largest U.S. cable company negotiates with the media conglomerate over how much its channels are worth and how to package them. Such "carriage disputes" are commonplace in the media world, though this negotiation may shape the future of television in the streaming era. Disney issued a statement saying it “stands ready” to resolve the carriage dispute, and “do what’s in the best interests” of Charter’s customers.

Even Charter thinks that cable TV sucks now

Charter, the second-biggest cable company in the US, says the cable TV model is broken. Fights like this have been common across the history of cable TV. Because Charter pays companies like Disney per subscriber, fewer cable TV subscribers meant less money coming in for TV networks. Charter might never actually say it out loud, but it's clear from the presentation that it thinks the cable TV model sucks now and has become a bad deal for customers. I could easily imagine a new type of cable TV package that mixes some live news and sports channels with access to streaming services.

The almost weeklong stalemate between Disney and Charter lays bare the broken business model around distributing legacy television in the age of cord-cutting. In the talks, Charter agreed to shell out more than the $2.2 billion annually it paid Disney under the old carriage deal. DIS 1M mountain Walt Disney stock performance month-to-date. Linear TV is an issue for Disney. However, we would like to see a quick end to the Charter dispute and to see Iger resolve Disney's challenging position in the traditional linear TV market.

While such "carriage disputes" are commonplace in the media world, with TV channels going dark as cable companies negotiate with media companies over how much its channels are worth and how to package channels, this fight is different. Companies like Charter say rising distribution fees are forcing cable companies to increase prices, causing consumers to leave. The nation’s second-largest cable operator said viewership for Disney’s sports, entertainment and children’s programming has declined as the media conglomerate invested in its Disney+ streaming service. Disney is trying to manage declining cable subscribers as it builds streaming offerings. It wants to keep as many cable subscribers as possible while it prepares to offer ESPN directly to consumers on an app.

CNN —A 22-year-old German man has been detained in Florence accused of damaging a statue in the 16th-century Fountain of Neptune in the Piazza della Signoria, city authorities said in a statement. The city estimates the damage to the statue is around €5,000 ($5,400). The fountain features a statue of the Roman sea god Neptune atop a shell-shaped carriage pulled by horses. The mayor of Florence tweeted a photo of the 22-year-old German tourist, whose face was blurred, posing on the 16th-century Fountain of Neptune in Piazza della Signoria in Florence. Disney urges Spectrum users to switch to Hulu live plan

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 4 (Reuters) - Walt Disney (DIS.N) urged customers of Charter Communications' Spectrum cable service to consider switching to a live television option from Hulu as the media companies remain at odds over a new distribution deal. With no deal in place, Disney suggested that Spectrum customers sign up for Hulu + Live TV, a streaming service that offers ESPN, ABC, Disney+ and dozens of other cable channels. "Despite the ongoing dispute, consumers have many other choices—such as Hulu + Live TV—that allow them to enjoy the great programming for which Disney Entertainment is known," the company said in a statement. Disney pulled its channels off Charter's Spectrum cable service last week in the middle of U.S. Open tennis coverage and other live sporting events including college football. Charter has about 14.7 million subscribers to its Spectrum TV service in markets including New York and Los Angeles.

Investors should look to Disney as an investment for the future, Wells Fargo says. Analyst Steven Cahall maintained his overweight rating on the stock and lowered his price target to $110, a $36 cut. With kids and families comprising two-thirds of core Disney+ subscribers, Cahill thinks the story of Disney+ will now be about its price and margins, not its subscriber growth. The Wells Fargo analyst added that Disney's direct-to-consumer business's longer-term DTC earnings and margins will "emerge as the key reason" to own the stock. Additionally, if ESPN does not transition well to Disney's DTC business, the analyst said that could create a "long-term EPS hole."

CNN —It’s a carriage fight that could lead to the dismantling — or revolution — of the cable television bundle. Charter argues that it is paying a premium for Disney content ($2.2 billion in 2023), but that much of the first-class, buzzy content is actually on platforms like Disney+, not the linear channels. And it says it has proposed “creative ways” to make Disney’s DTC offerings available to Charter subscribers. But, in Disney’s eyes, why would it give away access to its expensive DTC content at no additional cost to Charter subscribers? “The Walt Disney Company and Charter have the opportunity to work together on transforming the industry for the long-term benefit of both companies and their customers,” Charter said.

If you've received a travel credit for a canceled Delta Air Lines flight, you might be able to claim it as a cash refund, with interest. As part of a class action settlement, Delta customers with canceled flights between March 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021, are entitled to a full cash refund, rather than the travel credits they likely received. The lawsuit alleges that the airline breached its contracts of carriage by refusing cash refunds for flights canceled during the Covid-19 pandemic. While Delta denies wrongdoing, the company agreed to settle the lawsuit to avoid further litigation. "Since the beginning of 2020 we've refunded over 11 million tickets totaling $6 billion, of which 20% took place in 2022," the statement says.

New York CNN —Fans of sports and other Disney offerings are going to have to do without on one of the nation’s largest cable providers. Disney pulled its programming from Charter Spectrum on Thursday night, even as the Disney-owned ESPN networks were covering major live sporting events such as the US Open and college football. Amid a broken “video ecosystem,” Charter Communications said, “Disney — so far — has insisted on a traditional long-term deal with higher rates and limited packaging flexibility,” in a presentation provided before an investor webcast. “Disney declined our proposal and pulled its video channels from Charter’s video customers on August 31,” it added. 1 men’s tennis player Carlos Alcaraz and Lloyd Harris in the second round of the US Open on ESPN.

One of the biggest cable companies in the United States has a message for media companies: The traditional cable-TV model is broken, and it needs to be fixed or abandoned. Cable TV is too expensive for consumers and providers, Charter Communications, which has nearly 15 million pay-TV subscribers, said in a 11-page presentation to investors on Friday. The channels will not be available to Charter subscribers until both sides agree on how much Charter will pay Disney to carry its channels. Charter delivered a scathing indictment of the cable television industry, which has generated billions of dollars for companies like Disney and Charter for decades. It’s a notable acknowledgment from Charter, one of the companies that propelled much of that growth.

That resulted in Charter's customers losing access to its networks, including broadcaster ABC and pay-TV channels such as ESPN and FX. These sorts of battles, which can lead to so-called blackouts for pay-TV customers, are common in the industry. They said they pushed for a revamped deal with Disney that would see Charter cable customers receive access to Disney's ad-supported streaming services like Disney+ and ESPN+ at no additional cost. "The [traditional TV] model has been very good to Disney," Pitaro said at CNBC x Boardroom's inaugural Game Plan sports business summit. Disney said Thursday that it has been able to secure successful deals with other pay-TV companies and is still committed to reaching an agreement with Charter.
