IAG's quarterly profit beat analyst forecasts by 40% and the British Airways parent company said the outlook for summer travel was encouraging, although it warned it was "mindful" of uncertainty in the wider economy. IAG, which also owns Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling, did not on Friday provide an update on its full-year guidance. It had said in May it expected annual profit above the top end of a 1.8 billion euros to 2.3 billion euros range. IAG said in its statement that while there was no sign of weakness in forward bookings it was "mindful of wider uncertainties that might affect the full year." For the three months to the end of June, the group recorded an operating profit before exceptional items of 1.25 billion euros ($1.37 billion), compared to the 895 million euros analysts were on average expecting.

But so far, IAG had not seen "any weakness into Q3 and Q4", finance chief Nicholas Cadbury added. In May, it said it expected annual profit above 2.3 billion euros ($2.5 billion), and analysts' consensus forecast stands at 2.8 billion euros. For the three months to the end of June, the group recorded an operating profit before exceptional items of 1.25 billion euros, compared to the 895 million euros analysts were on average expecting. CNN —International airlines have reported significant profits this year, boosted by strong demand for leisure travel – and events, such as the World Cup, which gave Qatar Airlines an enormous lift. On Thursday, International Airlines Group, which includes Aer Lingus and British Airways, announced a record profit of about $1.4 billion for the first half of the year. “Customer demand remains strong across the Group, particularly for leisure travel, with around 80% of passenger revenue for the third quarter already booked. Qatar Airways reported a $1.2 billion profit for the past fiscal year, ascribing its strong performance to December’s FIFA World Cup. In its report, Qatar Airways said that, throughout the 2022 World Cup, the company operated around 140,000 flights to bring more than 1.4 million people to Qatar.

But improved pay offers mean that DHL workers, who provide services to easyJet, have cancelled their walk outs completely after they voted to accept a 15% pay rise, the union said. Currently ASC workers have not yet suspended their walk outs, while Menzies have suspended some of them. A fourth set of workers, who are contracted by GGS, have suspended strikes between July 28-Aug.1 to allow negotiations to continue but are still due to walk out Aug. 4-8.

LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) - A first round of strikes planned by baggage handlers working with easyJet (EZJ.L) at London's Gatwick airport has been suspended after a better pay offer, their union said on Tuesday, warning that other walkouts will still go ahead. Around 600 DHL workers who fulfil contracts for Gatwick's biggest airline easyJet (EZJ.L) have called off strikes planned for 28 July to 1 August and will now be balloted on the new pay offer, trade union Unite said in a statement. "As an act of good faith, Unite’s Gatwick DHL members have agreed to suspend their first set of strikes while they are balloted on the new offer," Unite Regional Officer Dominic Rothwell said. If members were to reject the deal, the union said it would set out fresh strike dates. Strikes planned by around 450 ASC, Menzies Aviation and GGS staff, who work for other airlines including British Airways, are still scheduled to take place from July 28 to Aug. 1 and from Aug. 4 to Aug. 8.

European travellers are already on high alert over worries about air traffic control problems arising from both the reduced air space available due to the Ukraine war, plus staffing issues and industrial action at some locations. Qatar Airways announced record annual revenue Thursday after the company's finances were bolstered by the FIFA World Cup, which was hosted in Qatar last year. Qatar Airways Group reported that passenger revenue was up 100% during its fiscal year 2022/23, with overall revenue up to 76.3 billion Qatari riyals ($21 billion). A total of 31.7 million passengers flew with Qatar's flagship carrier in the last year, which was up 71% compared to the previous year. A British Airways flight turned around after encountering severe turbulence, The Sun reported. A source told Insider a crew member needed surgery on her ankle after the turbulence. The airline said the flight returned to Singapore as a precaution. The Sun first reported that BA flight 12 from Singapore Changi to London Heathrow Airport on Friday encountered severe turbulence over the Bay of Bengal, injuring five flight attendants. A person familiar with the incident told Insider that the flight returned to Singapore because of the turbulence.

Separately, state agencies said late Thursday that millions of people in Louisiana and Oregon had their data compromised in a security breach. The cyberattack has targeted federal and state agencies. No other federal agencies have confirmed being impacted. CNN —Millions of people in Louisiana and Oregon have had their data compromised in the sprawling cyberattack that has also hit the US federal government, state agencies said late Thursday. The breach has affected 3.5 million Oregonians with driver’s licenses or state ID cards, and anyone with that documentation in Louisiana, authorities said. The hackers exploited a flaw in a popular file-transfer software known as MOVEit made by Massachusetts-based Progress Software. Hundreds of organizations across the globe have likely had their data exposed after the hackers used the flaw to break into networks in recent weeks. US officials described the cyberattack as an opportunistic, financially motivated hack that has not caused disruptions to agency services.

A British Airways flight was delayed for hours after its emergency slide was accidentally inflated. The Sun reported that it was deployed by a flight attendant on her first trip on an Airbus A350. A similar incident affected another British Airways plane at Heathrow in January. A British Airways cabin crew member accidentally activated an emergency slide as the plane was heading for the runway, delaying passengers for hours. It's the second such incident affecting British Airways this year.

CNN —“Several” US federal government agencies have been hit in a global cyberattack that exploits a vulnerability in widely used software. A CISA spokesperson had no comment when CNN asked who carried out the hack of federal agencies and how many have been affected. But the news adds to a growing tally of victims of a sprawling hacking campaign that began two weeks ago and has hit major US universities and state governments. As of Thursday morning, the dark website did not list any US federal agencies. Progress, the US firm that owns the MOVEit software, has also urged victims to update their software packages and has issued security advice.

CNN —Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines has defended imposing weight requirements on flight attendants after reports of the new policy went viral on social media and sparked a public backlash. “I just need the flight attendant to be fully qualified in professional knowledge, well-practiced in safety procedures, and wear the most suitable shoes and clothes for emergencies. Alaska Airlines also launched gender-neutral uniform guidelines for flight attendants last year; Virgin Atlantic and British Airways have adopted similar policies for greater inclusivity. Other Asian airlines have made headlines in recent years for imposing weight rules on cabin crew. In 2015, Air India asked 125 flight attendants to lose weight, while Pakistan’s national airline ordered cabin crew to abide by weight limits or face being grounded in 2019.

LONDON, June 12 (Reuters) - Britain's communications regulator Ofcom on Monday said it was one of the organisations affected in a data theft hack centred on the popular file transfer tool MOVEit. "A limited amount of information about certain companies we regulate - some of it confidential - along with personal data of 412 Ofcom employees, was downloaded during the attack," the watchdog said in a statement. Tens of thousands of employees of British Airways, drugstore chain Boots and the BBC were among those whose personal data was exposed following the breach, the companies said last week. Ofcom said it took immediate action to prevent further use of the MOVEit service and to implement the recommended security measures. A limited amount of Ofcom data was downloaded from the MOVEit server during the breach, rather than from Ofcom systems directly, a spokesperson for the regulator said via e-mail.
