A wing of the Eiffel Tower has been cleared out to make way for a brand-new restaurant called Gustave 24. A fully built commercial kitchen is set to be airlifted into the Palais de Tokyo, a contemporary art museum on the Right Bank. Some 80 temporary restaurants are being set up in Paris and other locales around the country where competitions will be staged. They will serve an average of 30,000 diners a day, each offering a different menu and format. And they’ll offer visitors a chance to experience the Olympics as dinner theater.

Hugo Swart, formerly Qualcomm's head of XR, joined Google's AR group in April to lead ecosystem strategy and partner relationships. Related storiesMark Lucovsky, a senior director on Google's AR software, left last July, citing "changes in AR leadership and Google's unstable commitment and vision" to the product. "Doing anything first-party is a challenge relationship-wise," said a former Google AR team member. There is internal speculation that Samsung will be the first to also build glasses with Google's AR software, according to two employees familiar with the matter. Without a device of its own and with its AR software still in development, Google now finds itself on the back foot.

To evaluate each state's infrastructure, our Top States study considers not just roads, bridges, ports and airports. The state broadband office notes that it is the nation's ninth-largest allocation per capita. The state's power grid is among America's least reliable, according to U.S. Department of Energy data. The severe weather means power outages are frequent as well. Since then, the power outages have persisted, making Maine's grid among the worst in the nation.

To rate each state's infrastructure, we look at roads, bridges, ports and airports. New in 2024, we evaluate so-called site readiness programs set up in many states to link companies with shovel-ready sites. The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama offers one of the more robust site readiness programs in the nation. Roads, bridges, and broadband are also in excellent shape in Tennessee. A respectable 24% of the state's power comes from renewable energy, putting it in the top half of states.

In Plainfield, Vt., a town of 1,350, some residents spent the past year cleaning up their homes after catastrophic floods swept through last July. On Thursday, many found themselves right back where they had started after flooding once again hit Plainfield and other parts of central Vermont, on the anniversary of the disaster that they had just started putting behind them. “It’s something very difficult to witness — people who have spent a year cleaning their place up, and now it’s covered in four feet of mud,” said Bram Towbin, the town clerk and treasurer in Plainfield. “We’re very resilient people, but these are not people of means. This is something we’ll be living with for many years.”The flooding battered roads and bridges in the state and forced more than 100 rescues and evacuations overnight.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will take new steps to ensure that the structures it funds — including schools, hospitals, police stations, libraries, sewage treatment plants and bridges — are protected from flooding. The agency said Wednesday that projects constructed with FEMA money must be built in a way that prevents flood damage, whether by elevating them above the expected height of a flood or, if that’s not feasible, by building in a safer location. The rule also makes it clear that building decisions must reflect risks now and also in the future, as climate change makes flooding more frequent and severe. “We are going to be able to put a stop to the cycle of response and recovery, and rinse and repeat,” Deanne Criswell, the FEMA administrator, said during a call with reporters. The new rule will “enhance resilience in flood-prone communities, by taking future flood risk into consideration when we rebuild,” she said.

Federal Reserve officials use government data to help determine when to raise or lower interest rates. Congress and the White House use it to decide when to extend jobless benefits or send out stimulus payments. But a new study says the integrity of that data is in increasing jeopardy. But that could soon change, the study warns, citing factors including shrinking budgets, falling survey response rates and the potential for political interference. “We’re not there yet, but if we don’t do something, that threat could become a reality, and in the not-too-distant future.”

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 upgrade will prompt an upgrade cycle this fall. Encouraging the outlook is an improving demand in China, and an iPhone growth turnaround will likely begin by September, he said. The "massive" upgrade cycle puts Apple on route to a $4 trillion market capitalization.

I have had extensive conversations with the leadership of the party, elected officials, rank and file members, and most importantly, Democratic voters over these past 10 days or so. Believe me, I know better than anyone the responsibility and the burden the nominee of our party carries. The voters of the Democratic Party have voted. I feel a deep obligation to the faith and the trust the voters of the Democratic Party have placed in me to run this year. The plan was bold, but ultimately doomed. But the stolen train, called “the General,” ran out of fuel 18 miles from Chattanooga, according to a U.S. Army account of the heist, which became known as the Great Locomotive Chase. The Union soldiers and civilians who took part in the mission fled, but all were captured after less than two weeks on the run. Most were sent to prisoner of war camps. In 1863, six survivors of the raid were the first American soldiers awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest decoration for valor in combat, which had been authorized by President Abraham Lincoln the year before.

We Counted 22,252 Cars to See How Much Congestion Pricing Might Have Made This MorningToday would have been the first Monday of New York City’s congestion pricing plan. We sent 27 people to count vehicles manually at four bridges, four tunnels and nine streets where cars entered the business district. In total, we counted 22,252 cars, trucks, motorcycles and buses between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Monday. But it does give you a rough sense of scale: It’s a lot of cars, and a lot of money. had planned to use the congestion pricing revenue estimates to secure $15 billion in financing for subway upgrades.

CNN —The Supreme Court ruled Friday in favor of an Oregon city that ticketed homeless people for sleeping outside, rejecting arguments that such “anti-camping” ordinances violate the Constitution’s ban on “cruel and unusual” punishment. The case centered on “anti-camping” ordinances in Grants Pass, Oregon, that were challenged by several residents experiencing homelessness. “For some people, sleeping outside is their only option.” The city, she said, “punishes them for being homeless. The ordinances barred people from sleeping in public with “bedding,” which can include sleeping bags or bundled-up clothing. He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

Read previewAcross the United States, scores of construction sites are emblazoned with signs that read: "Project Funded By President Joe Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law." For many people, it's an innocuous notation of the thousands of projects financed by the sweeping $1.2 trillion infrastructure law Biden signed into law in 2021 and was backed by both Democrats and a sizable contingent of Republicans. Cruz, in the letter, then argues that Biden "unilaterally rebranded" the bipartisan infrastructure law as "President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law," which passed the House by 228-206 votes and the Senate by 69-30 votes. "Congress, not President Biden, wrote [the infrastructure law], and it did not do so to aid the President's reelection campaign." The law provided federal funding for long-awaited upgrades for bridges and tunnels, highways, and rail infrastructure, among other projects.

Juneteenth is a celebration of that hard-fought Black freedom, observed in honor of June 19, 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas, first learned from Union soldiers that they were free. CNN —Nintendo has dropped a fresh surprise for fans – a new Zelda title where gamers will finally be able to play the titular princess from the legendary fantasy series. The new game, “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” will release on the Switch console on September 26, according to a statement from Nintendo. The many iterations of the games usually revolve around the heroic elf Link, who spends most of his adventures trying to save Princess Zelda who, more often than not, has been kidnapped or mysteriously disappeared. Now it’s up to Princess Zelda to step into the protagonist’s role,” Eiji Aonuma, producer of the Zelda series, said in a video released by Nintendo. The release of a new Zelda game is the second surprise announcement Nintendo has dropped in recent weeks.
