CNN —Venezuelans headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in a highly consequential presidential election where the country’s longtime strongman, Nicolas Maduro, will face one of his greatest political challenges yet, say analysts. Of the nine other candidates running for the presidency, his biggest challenger is a unified opposition movement that overcame their divisions to form a coalition known as the Democratic Unitary Platform. After handling a 17th-century British coin for a moment, he seemingly returned it and moved on, like thousands of other visitors. Only last week did the museum discover — through the artist’s Instagram page — that he had replaced a genuine coin with his own replica and discarded the real artifact in the museum’s donation box on his way out. The act was the culmination of a more-than-yearlong project by Ilê Sartuzi, an art student at Goldsmiths, University of London. “The gesture of stealing as a central part of the project brings back the heated discussion about the role of looting in the museum’s foundation,” Mr. Sartuzi said.

CNN —Sharks living off the coast of Brazil have tested positive for cocaine, according to new research, the first time that the drug has been detected in free-ranging sharks. Cocaine levels were around three times higher in muscle tissue than liver tissue, according to the study, while female sharks had higher cocaine concentrations in muscle tissue compared to males. Cocaine consumption has risen massively around the world in recent decades, according to the study. Increased consumption and poor sewage treatment infrastructure has made for increased cocaine levels in the sea, say researchers. Hauser Davis said that it is “very likely” that crustaceans, fish and other animals that the sharks prey on are also contaminated with cocaine.

Reuters —Rare images of the Mashco Piro, an uncontacted indigenous tribe in the remote Peruvian Amazon, were published on Tuesday by Survival International, showing dozens of the people on the banks of a river close to where logging companies have concessions. The Mashco Piro have been seen coming out of the rainforest more frequently in recent weeks. More than 50 Mashco Piro people appeared in recent days near a village of the Yine people called Monte Salvado. Several logging companies hold timber concessions inside the territory inhabited by the Mashco Piro. The Mashco Piro have also been sighted across the border in Brazil, said Rosa Padilha, at the Brazilian Catholic bishops’ Indigenous Missionary Council in the state of Acre.

And the number of Russian spies in the West is now estimated to be at the highest it has been in decades. CNN —A video-gaming Italian teenager will become the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint after his cause for canonization was approved by church authorities. Often depicted wearing jeans and trainers, his story is seen as helpful for the Catholic Church as it seeks to better connect with the younger generation in a digital age, and he’s become popular with Catholic youth groups. In May, a second miracle attributed to Acutis was recognized by Pope Francis, a decision which paved the way for him to be declared a saint. He was reportedly healed after his mother said she prayed to Acutis to intercede and help heal her son. Her mother said she prayed for her daughter’s recovery at the tomb of Acutis in Assisi.
