Your Grilled Cheese Needs Toum

I’m embracing nostalgia today, luxuriating in memories of a Brooklyn I never experienced, even though I’m borough-raised. And for dinner beforehand, maybe Chinese roast pork on garlic bread? For Ham El-Waylly, nostalgia is a grilled cheese sandwich slathered with toum (above), a sauce made by combining garlic, lemon juice, salt and oil. The mixture is one that recalls the akkawi cheese manakeesh sandwiches he used to consume as a teenager in Doha, Qatar. The toum packs a wallop, as if you’d stuffed garlic bread with Muenster.

Former Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernandez testifies during his trial on U.S. drug trafficking charges in federal court in the Manhattan borough of New York City, U.S., March 6, 2024 in this courtroom sketch. Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was convicted Friday in New York of charges that he conspired with drug traffickers and used his military and national police force to enable tons of cocaine to make it unhindered into the United States. The jury returned its verdict at a federal court after a two week trial, which has been closely followed in his home country. The scene in the courtroom was subdued and Hernandez seemed relaxed as the verdict on three counts was announced by the jury foreperson. In remarks to the jury before they left the courtroom, Judge P. Kevin Castel praised jurors for reaching a unanimous verdict, which was necessary for a conviction.

Bike lanes are good for business
  + stars: | 2024-03-07 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +13 min
Freaked-out business owners have been fighting bike lanes coast to coast, in cities from San Diego to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Rowe compared sales taxes in these “Neighborhood Business Districts” with those in similar districts in the city that didn’t get bike lanes. In one NBD, which replaced car lanes and three parking spots with two bike lanes, sales closely tracked those in the bike-less areas, both in peaks and troughs. Sometimes nothing changed, but more often the areas near bike lanes wound up with more employees and more revenue. It’s the new normal.” All the data in the world may prove that bike lanes are good for business.

CNN —Dozens of cities along the US coastline are sinking at alarming rates, leaving them far more exposed to devastating flooding from sea level rise than previously thought, scientists reported Wednesday. Cities on the East Coast where sinking land is exacerbating sea level rise include New York City and Atlantic City; Virginia Beach; Charleston, South Carolina; and Savannah, Georgia. As much as a third of sea level rise in this region over the next three decades could come from the sinking effect, the report found. This is a particular problem in areas where new coastal land has been created over the years by backfilling with sediment. Additionally, researchers say most sea level rise studies make projections for the end of the century, which “is viewed as too far (away) to begin planning,” Shirzaei said.

A more important factor could be whether Trump's real estate assets are already mortgaged, said law professor John Coffee. This year, I had the confidence to counteroffer when I received my lease renewal, which stated a roughly $52 monthly rent increase. I live in New York City's Manhattan borough, which is one of the most expensive areas in the U.S. to rent an apartment. The first call to my management company in early December almost deterred me. Finally, I sent an email to a general inbox with my management company asking to go straight to the source: my landlord. After quickly crunching the numbers, I realized the total cost of my rent increase over the year would be just over $600 for a 1-year lease.

Eventually it grew, and Hachamovitch expanded and established abortion clinics across the country, from Long Island to Arizona to Texas. AdvertisementAdvocates say that independent clinics — in 2022, Bronx Abortion was one of two in a borough of about 1.4 million people — are essential to providing abortion care. But even in New York, a state that has committed to protecting and supporting abortion rights, independent clinics are at risk. According to the Abortion Care Network, "threats to these clinics are a threat to abortion access overall." But they agree on one thing: At any given moment, a small independent clinic like Bronx Abortion might be forced to shut down.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine on Monday announced it received a historic billion-dollar donation to make tuition free. While becoming a doctor has historically been a lucrative career path, many students come out of med school under a mountain of student debt. Nearly 3 in 4 med school graduates have education-related debt when they graduate, according to Bankrate. Public med school graduates leave with an average of $194,558 in debt, while those who attend private schools graduate with an average of $222,899 in loans. The 93-year-old widow of a Wall Street financier has donated $1 billion to a Bronx medical school, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, with instructions that the gift be used to cover tuition for all students going forward. It is one of the largest charitable donations to an educational institution in the United States and most likely the largest to a medical school. The donation is notable not only for its staggering size, but also because it is going to a medical institution in the Bronx, the city’s poorest borough. The Bronx has a high rate of premature deaths and ranks as the unhealthiest county in New York. Over the past generation, a number of billionaires have given hundreds of millions of dollars to better-known medical schools and hospitals in Manhattan, the city’s wealthiest borough.

The expansion of government-subsidized housing loans meant that cheap space was also easy to come by, as New York had a then-ample stock of residential and industrial buildings. But the city has always romanticized artist-dominated buildings, the kinds of communal spaces in which every unit might be home to an artist’s studio (and sometimes, unofficially, their residences, too). In an almost unheard-of feat of perseverance, the same artist, Don Dudley, 93, has been working out of this loft since 1971. So artists have had to create a kind of whisper network to withstand New York’s unimpeachable forward march, which the art market has, ironically, enabled. Most of them are temporary fixes before an artist — who’s grown out, or been priced out, of their space — has to move on.

What's more, child poverty surged from 2021 to 2022, rising to 25% of children living in poverty, the report found. The findings conjure a stark contrast with the ultrawealthy in New York City, which, as of 2023, had the highest concentration of millionaires worldwide, with 340,000 millionaires, according to the London-based firm Henley & Partners. Alarmingly, this year's annual Poverty Tracker report observes the sharpest one-year increase in poverty we've found since launching the study in 2012. Buery cited the expired pandemic-era financial supports, such as the expanded child tax credit, as examples of the city's progress in the past. "We know that fully refundable tax credits, housing vouchers, and childcare subsidies can move millions out of poverty and hardship.

London’s public transportation system may soon become a bit easier to navigate. The train lines on London’s Overground, a rail system that largely serves people in neighborhoods outside of central London beyond the reach of the city’s Underground system, will be renamed. The lines on the map will also receive new colors, replacing a system that is currently marked entirely with orange lines on maps. While the Overground is technically a different system than the Underground, popularly known as the tube, the same payment method applies to both, and multiple stations connect the two systems. The new names are: Lioness, named after the English women’s soccer team; Mildmay, honoring a small East London hospital with a pivotal role caring for patients during the AIDS crisis; Windrush, after the ship that brought some of the first migrants from the Caribbean to Britain; Weaver, which travels through an area once known for its textile trade; Suffragette, after the movement that fought for women’s right to vote; and Liberty, which references the historical independence of the people of the Havering borough.
