The problem with this approach is that most Republican voters do not want an alternative to Trump; they overwhelmingly back him. At least that’s what the Nikki Haley campaign said after finishing second to former President Donald Trump in the New Hampshire primaries on Tuesday. Democratic nominee Bill Clinton and third-party candidate Ross Perot exploited that division in the Republican Party against Bush in the fall. The Republican Party is united behind Trump, and with optimal conditions for an opponent like Haley, Trump was still unstoppable. “Democrats deserve options, and it’s not clear at all that President Biden can beat Donald Trump.

On Wednesday morning, Trump attacked Haley again, posting an altered photo of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with Haley’s face superimposed on it. Those ads have attacked Haley on immigration, something Trump’s team views as a top issue for Republicans in New Hampshire. During a rally in Atkinson, New Hampshire, on Tuesday, Trump accused Haley of “artificially boosting her numbers” by appealing to “Democrats and liberals to infiltrate” the GOP primary. Since the Biden campaign's launch, nearly 1 million supporters have made more than 2.3 million contributions, and 97% of all its fourth-quarter 2023 donations were under $200, with the average contribution totaling $41.88, it announced. Biden's campaign said December was his strongest fundraising month to date, exceeding a record it said was previously set in November. That helped last year's final quarter outpace the period from July through September, when Biden and his party reported raising $71-plus million. The campaign said the president has held 110 fundraisers since launching, including 39 in last year's fourth quarter alone. Even with so much travel focused on fundraising, however, Biden campaign officials had tried to manage expectations.
