Forty-six people were hospitalized in a "foodborne illness outbreak" after sharing a dish at their workplace in Maryland, officials said. The Howard County Health Department said it was working with the Maryland Department of Health to investigate the exact cause of the incident. “Preliminary indications are that the illness was related to outside food prepared by an employee and shared with others at the facility,” the department said. The Maryland Health Department reiterated on X it was “not currently aware of any risk of further illnesses connected to this incident.”The incident unfolded at NAFCO Wholesale Seafood Distributors, WBAL reported. CNN —President Joe Biden is expected to issue an apology to the Native American community for the federal government’s role in the abusive Indian boarding schools that forced Native American children to assimilate over a 150-year period, two sources familiar with the plans said. “The federally-run Indian boarding school system was designed to assimilate Native Americans by destroying Native culture, language and identity through harsh militaristic and assimilationist methods,” the White House said Thursday. In 2021, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary, commissioned the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative to review the impact of the federal boarding school policies. The department issued a final report this summer confirming at least 973 Native American children died while attending these federal boarding schools. At least 18,000 children were taken from their families and forced to attend more than 400 Indian boarding schools across 37 states or then-territories between 1819 and 1969.

CNN —An Italian surfer has died after being impaled in the chest by a sharp-billed fish while surfing off Indonesia’s West Sumatra coast. Giulia Manfrini, 36, had been surfing in the Mentawai Islands, a remote island chain when she suffered a “freak accident,” said her business partner James Colston. “Unfortunately, even with the brave efforts of her partner, local resort staff and doctors, Giulia couldn’t be saved,” Colston said Sunday in a statement on Instagram. According to a medical report, she suffered a stab wound to the upper left chest with a depth of about five centimeters, the agency said. Together Colston and Manfrini founded travel company AWAVE Travel, which organized trips to popular surfing destinations, including the Mentawai Islands.

In fact, Madras said, adverse effects are such a concern that researchers in psychedelic clinical trials often actively recruit people who have successfully taken psychedelics in the past. In a study using psilocybin for alcohol substance abuse, for example, some 95% of those involved correctly guessed whether they were taking psilocybin or the placebo.
