Opinion | The Inverted Morality of MAGA
  + stars: | 2024-11-28 | by ( David Brooks | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
He built a successful investment firm by supporting successful young businesses like Staples. But as Noah Millman writes on Substack, people in the MAGA movement take a different view of Romney. Millman’s underlying point is it’s not sufficient to say that Trump is leading a band of morally challenged people to power. The people I regard as upright and admirable MAGA regards as morally disgraceful, and the people I regard as corrupt and selfish MAGA regards as heroic. The crucial distinction is that some of us have an institutional mind-set while the MAGA mind-set is anti-institutional.

The two remaining criminal cases, the New York case involving hush money payments and a Georgia election interference case, are also in limbo. At the fruit stand where he works on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Shah Alam sells dozens of bananas a day at 35 cents a piece, or four for a dollar. He does a brisk business in cheap fruit outside Sotheby’s auction house; inside, art can sell for millions. But last Wednesday, Mr. Alam sold a banana that a short time later would be auctioned as part of a work of absurdist art, won by a cryptocurrency entrepreneur for $5.2 million plus more than $1 million in auction-house fees. A few days after the sale, as Mr. Alam stood in the rain on York Avenue and East 72nd Street, snapping bananas free of their bunches, he learned from a reporter what had become of the fruit: It had been duct-taped to a wall as part of a work by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, and sold to Justin Sun, the Chinese founder of a cryptocurrency platform.

— Thanks, Marek We do two things right off the bat after identifying a stock that we might want to buy. Remember, as an investor, you want to know every little aspect of every company whose stock you buy or think about buying. Financial statements In addition to understanding a company from a high level, we can't take a position before analyzing the financial statements and getting a sense of the health of the company in question. All three are incredibly important, however, of the three, the balance sheet is going to be the one to look at first. Knowing what shape the balance sheet is in gives you a better sense of the company's outlook.
