German authorities search BNY Mellon bank in cum-ex probe

BERLIN, Nov 22 (Reuters) - German authorities searched the Frankfurt office of bank BNY Mellon (BK.N) on Tuesday in connection with an ongoing investigation into the multi-billion euro tax fraud scheme known as "cum-ex", the bank said. "BNY Mellon's Frankfurt office was visited today by the German authorities," said the bank. "We continue to cooperate fully with the authorities in an ongoing investigation relating to legacy tax matters. There has been no interruption to services that we provide to clients," it added in an email. JAKARTA, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Coal miner PT Indika Energy (INDY.JK) and Taiwan-based Foxconn (2317.TW), which are partnering to make electric vehicles in Indonesia, are considering bringing in a Thai firm as a third partner, Indika's top executive told Reuters on Wednesday. Arsjad Rasjid, President Director of Indonesian miner Indika, declined to name the Thai company nor any target for the completion of the partnership due to ongoing negotiations, but said the three could invest in EV or EV battery production. In September, Indika and Foxconn launched a $2 billion joint venture to make EVs, batteries and energy storage in Indonesia. Foxconn, Apple's biggest iPhone maker, also has a $1 billion joint venture with Thai energy group PTT (PTT.BK) to produce battery EVs. Indika is one of the top coal miners in Indonesia, which is the world's biggest coal exporter.

BANGKOK, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Thai Airways International PCL (THAI.BK) expects to name a new permanent CEO as early as January 2023 as it proceeds with a pandemic-driven restructuring plan, the airline's acting chief executive said on Friday. "There were nearly 50 applicants," acting CEO Suvadhana Sibunruang told Reuters on the sidelines of an industry gathering in Bangkok, saying a decision would be made early next year. Thai Airways entered bankruptcy protection last year to restructure 400 billion baht ($11.1 billion) in debt and has shed around half of its workforce and aircraft fleet. The carrier previously said Thai state agencies will own about 40% of the airline after restructuring, down from current levels of 67%. The airline on Friday reported a third-quarter loss of 4.79 billion baht, down from a 40 billion baht profit the prior year that included a large one-off gain from the restructuring plan.
Buffett's Berkshire sheds large portion of US Bancorp stake

In a regulatory filing, Berkshire said it owned just over 53 million U.S. Bancorp shares, for a 3.6% stake, on Oct. 31, down from 144.7 million shares, or 9.8%, on Dec. 31, 2021. Berkshire began investing in the Minneapolis-based bank in 2006, according to regulatory filings. U.S. Bancorp and Buffett's assistant did not immediately respond to requests for comment after market hours. Berkshire owned $126.5 billion of the iPhone maker's shares on Sept. 30. On Nov. 14, Berkshire is expected in a regulatory filing to disclose more information about its U.S.-listed stock holdings.

BANGKOK, Oct 26 (Reuters) - A Thai celebrity media tycoon and transgender rights advocate has bought the Miss Universe Organization for $20 million, marking the first time the beauty pageant organiser will be owned by a woman, her company said on Wednesday. She has been outspoken about her experience as a transgender woman and also set up the Life Inspired For Thailand Foundation to advocate for the rights to dignity and opportunities for transgender people. The acquisition is "a strong, strategic addition to our portfolio," said Jakapong, adding that Miss Universe, with its content, licensing and merchandising opportunities, plans to expand in Asia. JKN produces its own shows and distributes content in Thailand from abroad including documentaries and Bollywood dramas. The annual beauty contest run by the Miss Universe Organisation, which was co-owned by Donald Trump between 1996 and 2002, is broadcast in 165 countries and has been running for 71 years.

JPMorgan & Chase (JPM.N), Citigroup, Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) and BNY Mellon act as depositary banks for most Russian depositary receipt programs, according to Clearstream. In statements to clients, some banks cited difficulties verifying there are enough shares to execute cancellations of depositary receipts. For example, BNY Mellon cited such a difficulty with Global Depositary Receipts in Russian gas company Novatek. While depositary receipts are under custody of global banks, the shares they represent are parked in Russia. Investors are meanwhile discussing ways online to meet the Russian requirements and how to pay fees to Russian banks.
