Fourteen years after its release, Sen. Tommy Tuberville is still earning royalties from "The Blind Side." In the movie, Tuberville briefly plays the role of himself as he tries to recruit Michael Oher to commit to Auburn University. Oher recently filed court documents alleging that he was misled by the family who brought him. According to a recently-file annual report of his personal finances, Tuberville earned $1,750.55 in royalties in 2022 from "WB Studio Enterprises Inc." in connection to the movie. Oher recently alleged in court documents that he was "exploited" by the Tuohy family, who he said never actually adopted him.

America’s new China curbs eschew scale for smarts

The White House on Wednesday took the wraps off its proposal for screening investments U.S.-based funds make abroad, giving President Joe Biden a new tool for “de-risking” from China. But while the government’s inbound-investment reviews have often proven onerous, the pitch for outbound screening should placate investors and even diplomats. If recipients boast close ties to Chinese military or intelligence capabilities, the department could then block the transaction. Follow @BenWinck on TwitterCONTEXT NEWSU.S. President Joe Biden on Aug. 9 issued an executive order that tasks the Treasury Department with forming an outbound investment screening program. In response to the executive order the Treasury Department issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeking comment on the program.

About half the respondents who voted for Biden in 2020 said they have heard little or nothing of his major policy initiatives to reduce inflation or boost spending on infrastructure. Biden and fellow Democrats pushed bills through Congress that put about $1.5 trillion toward new bridge, road, climate and manufacturing projects. Democratic strategist Jennifer Holdsworth said this week's trip would counter a message spread by the nation's right-wing media distorting the economy and Biden's legislative agenda. "As President Biden gets out there on the campaign trail, I think you'll see that trend start to change," she said. On Wednesday, Biden will be in New Mexico to tout the IRA's role in a clean-energy manufacturing boom, one year after the law was signed.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File PhotoAug 4 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden is expected to issue his long-awaited executive order to screen outbound investments in sensitive technologies to China early next week, according to people familiar with the matter. The order is expected to target U.S. private equity, venture capital and joint venture investments in China in semiconductors, quantum computing and artificial intelligence. Most investments captured by the order will require that the government be notified about them. The regulations are not expected to take effect right away and the administration will solicit comment on its proposals, according to sources. Sources have told Reuters the investments that will be restricted are expected to track export control rules for China issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce in October.

Six percent of Biden's 2020 voters picked Trump. Forty-two percent of Biden's 2020 voters in the poll said the economy was "worse" than it was in 2020, compared to 33% who said it was "better" and 24% who said it was "about the same." Most of Biden's 2020 voters in the poll - 78% - said they approved of his performance as president, well above his 40% approval rating among all respondents. But a critical division exists among Biden's 2020 voters. When poll respondents were asked to describe how much Biden and his administration have invested in the U.S. economy, 35% of Biden's 2020 voters selected the option "not enough."

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Friday a deal may be on the way with Saudi Arabia. Biden, who was speaking at campaign fundraiser in Maine, did not give details about the possible deal. On Thursday, the New York Times published a column by Thomas Friedman in which he said Biden was considering whether to pursue a U.S.-Saudi mutual security pact that would involve Saudi Arabia normalizing relations with Israel.

CNN —President Joe Biden swiped at renewed impeachment talk by top Republicans as he sold his agenda in Maine on Friday, suggesting his economic record was a threat to opponents. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy this week escalated talk of launching an impeachment inquiry into Biden and his family’s business dealings, prompting some backlash from moderate Republicans. The White House has dismissed the prospect, suggesting the president was focused on his economic agenda and not threats from Republicans. The White House said the state lost more than 42,000 manufacturing jobs between 1990 and January 2021. The visit comes after a week of positive economic news the White House says is the result of the president’s decision-making.

The White House has said Biden was never in business with his son. "Republicans may have to find something else to criticize me for now that inflation is coming down. "Workers who have been left behind for decades aren't just finding jobs, more jobs, they're finding better jobs, with higher pay," Biden said. Biden detailed decades of job loss in Maine, as the state's historical industries, including textiles and paper, shut factories for lower-cost destinations. Several Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives met at the White House on Friday to discuss implementing the $1 trillion infrastructure bill that Biden has signed into law.

Mitch McConnell urged a majority of universities to get behind a single name, image, and likeness (NIL) bill. NIL has upended college athletics as states jockey to pass the most expansive law. His observation isn't surprising as some universities, governors, and lawmakers see a benefit in allowing each state to determine its own NIL standards. Having a more expansive state law is now an asset akin to a new practice facility or a massive weight room. Missouri's newly passed NIL law is regarded as one of the most expansive in the country, explicitly allowing coaches and school officials to talk about NIL with potential recruits.

Social Class Is Not About Only Race

The same is true at some other public universities, including Auburn, Georgia Tech and William & Mary. It is also true at a larger group of elite private colleges, including Bates, Brown, Georgetown, Oberlin, Tulane and Wake Forest. Nearly every college with an affluent enrollment has historically used race-based admissions policies. Those policies often succeeded at producing racial diversity without producing as much economic diversity. And whether they figure out how to do so is important (as I’ve previously covered).

CNN —Ultramarathon runner Courtney Dauwalter crushed the women’s course record at the Western States 100-mile race in California, taking more than an hour off the previous best time. Dauwalter finished the Western States 100 – the world’s oldest 100-mile race – in 15 hours, 29 minutes and 34 seconds, almost 80 minutes faster than Ellie Greenwood’s record set in 2012. Chandan Khanna/AFP/Getty ImagesAfter running with fellow American Katie Schide, Dauwalter started pulling away around the 30-mile mark, steadily eating away at Greenwood’s course record. Schide finished in second on Saturday in 16 hours, 43 minutes and 45 seconds, which was also quicker than Greenwood’s previous course record. In the men’s event, the United Kingdom’s Tom Evans won in 14 hours, 40 minutes and 22 seconds – the fourth-fastest time in the history of the race.

Thursday night, I got the sense that this was not something Smith was just doing for show: This is a band that noticeably, palpably cares about its fans. And onstage, Smith emitted a sincere sense of gratitude that I found transfixing. Yes, Smith still styles himself like a kinder, gentler version of the Joker. Here were six guys just playing their instruments, occasionally striking exaggerated rock poses, but mostly just letting this majestic music speak for itself. Today’s playlist is an appreciation for the Cure’s reign as a top-notch live act.

Many Pride organizers across the country say high-profile brand backlashes, restrictive legislation and heightened threats against LGBTQ people have fueled record crowd turnout this year. Most of the Pride organizers NBC News spoke with, including Snider, declined to identify corporate sponsors that shrunk their involvement or visibility, concerned about alienating important financial backers. Like Indy Pride, Pride organizations are typically nonprofit organizations that also offer year-round services to the LGBTQ community, such as grants, educational events and support for political activism. Josh Coleman, president of Central Alabama Pride in Birmingham, said some longtime corporate sponsors dropped out this year, including Wells Fargo. Kendra Johnson, executive director of Equality NC, said threats against the community and Pride events have risen dramatically throughout North Carolina.
